Another Japanese player (Sekiguchi) complained about the long trip and lack of practice after coming from Hawaii and he played in the doubles tournament. Ito had a difficult road on this tournament. Two long matches and a defeat in the singles semifinals where Kahn mentioned Ito's fatigue as the reason for a convincing win. Ito had a good draw yesterday - the Australian who hasn't played since 2012 due to injury and Hubble still managed to put up some resistance. The Japanese player got only two breaks in that match and now he's facing a much more dangerous opponent. Mitchell should have beaten him two years ago but he missed a good chance, which he should be able to use here. A good win against the talented Saville whom he beat in last two matches will lift his spirits. I watched Ito last week in the semi-finals and I didn't believe he would come here. Yesterday's match confirmed my doubts about his readiness and Mitchell is a step or two above Hubble who hadn't played in more than a year until this week. I would be surprise if Mitchell does not become the favorite until the match starts. Details

Vesely had the set with 5-2 and a double break. After that he asked for the physio's help because of his back. He lost both serves to win the match and only Ungur's errors helped him win the tie-break somehow. He cancelled the doubles tournament for the same reason so I don't believe he can play the whole match here or win it. Considering the lack of bookmakers (or the limits for the bet), the "1st ball" rule gives you a good choice with the bookies that acknowledge a win after the first set has been played. Details

Berrer won Heilbronn three times, but the opening match yesterday was a tough one. Still, he managed to win all of his 17 service games. Becker won his match by allowing only one break point. They played a three set match in Ortisei on a fast surface late last year. I expect the same to happen today, but it could end in two sets as well. Both of them won their matches yesterday without losing a single service game, but didn't create too many opportunities for break points either. Berrer is put as a slight favorite for the win on account of his previous performances here, but Becker will be a tough nut to crack. He recorded the last two defeats here after the prolonged third set. Details

A situational bet. Muller didn't play since Roland Garros due to elbow issues. It was a long break for the 30-year-old, and the come back will be tough. He played his first match last week, and got defeated to Katic, a 25-year-old who never made it to Top 550. True, Cecchinato is not an indoors player, but that's why the odds are so high. Still, the Italian proved last year that he wants to improve his hard court game. He's been working on his service, and will try to make it to Top 100 this year. He played Doha, Australia, managed to win a set against Thiem, which means he is consistent. Consistent enough, I believe, to take advantage of all the shortcomings a player who hasn't played since the last Roland Garros will have. If Katic could win, Cecchinato should certainly be able to do the same a few days later. Details

It's hard to see this match being over in three sets. Dimitrov has never gotten to 4th Round of a Grand Slam and big things are expected from him this season. Ranoic's serve is great but his return is still lacking. I don't see either player winning this one in three sets and there is a good chance that a few sets will go into tie-break. Taking that into consideration, I expect this margin to go through without too many problems in fours sets. Details

Harrison has covered this handicap without too much trouble but he did nothing on return. Monfils did just what was necessary, he held his serve and looked for the break. Sock is more dangerous than Harrison on his return and his serve is equally if not even more convincing. Sock's preparedness is very important for this handicap as he claims he can play 5 sets in this heat. He doesn't have to, he could lose in three and this could still go through without too much hassle. The American can get a set so over 32.5 is also recommendable but I think this handicap is the best option. The conditions are fast, the heat is terrible and no player will wear himself out in rallies. Especially not players like Monfils who are aiming to get to week 2. Details

Robert lost the qualifications against Berrer with some conviction but he got a new chance as a lucky loser. A win against Bedene was convincing but the Slovenian has some problems with his chronic injury and he simply let go by the end of second set. On the other hand, Przysiezny had the season of his career last year and it seems he has finally matured. Unlike him, Robert peaked 4 years ago and now he's outside of Top 100. He lost the qualifier games in the two tournaments before this one with some conviction and I believe the strength of the Pole's shots will be his huge advantage here. Horrible heat is expected, and this favors those with better firepower, in this case it's the Pole. Details

I understand the euphoria around Hewitt. He's won the ATP title at the start of the season and the journalists asked him whether he plans to retire soon. He got a huge role of the favorite against Seppi because of that but the margins suggest this should be a walk in the park and I disagree with this view. Seppi did his best on Grand Slams last season. There is no point expecting a three-set match. The Italian played 14 matches at this level last season and he took half of them into the 5th set. He reached the fourth round here last year. Hewitt seems to have a fetish for long matches too. At the last US Open, he played three 5-set matches in a row. Both players depend on the rhythm and can't play the whole match in a trance. That's why a logical option here is more than three sets and it pays very well. Details

Kavčič often performs best as an outsider. One time, he said that he plays his best tennis when he chases the result, that's his mind set. He is currently below the radar after having a poor season last year but he has prepared quite well for this one. He says, the preparations have been the best of his career. His base is in Dubai where lots of top-tier players prepare. He was knocked out of the qualifiers in Doha but Gojowczyk was great then. After all, the German did reach the semi-finals. Kavčić reached the quarter-finals and his performance reminds me of his good old days. He is full of confidence and can give Stepanek a hard time. The Czech has a reputation as a good outsider. He took a set against Del Potro despite barely beating Groth in the previous match. He was two points away from a defeat. I'm not sure Stepanek can win this one at all. He had blunders against weaker opponents but the Slovenian is definitely underrated. This match will probably no end in three sets. Details

Rola passed the qualifications with much authority. First he beat the two veterans and was then convincing against Herbert who is a player of faster conditions with an improving form. The Slovenian is no clay player even though he plays on it a lot. He started his career late as he was studying in the US. He's won the NCAA title which means he plays on concrete a lot. Delbonis play his first ATP match on concrete last week. He had a solid draw but didn't win a set against Young. I will go for winning the first set in this one and the reasons are manifold. Rola has the advantage in terms of qualifications and adaptation to the conditions. The Argentine has had only one match this season and he will be out of rhythm. Even though I believe Rola will win, he's an inexperienced player who is not used to playing best of five matches and I don't want to rely on the entire match. After all, his advantage should be the biggest at the start. Details

Pospisil has forfeited the semi-finals against Wawrinka in India. He's had an active result in the second set but his back could no longer take it. In addition to his back, he also has some problems with his ankle and he had to wear a kinesiological tape on his knee. Not only that, he traveled 18 hours from India and he will hardly give his stand-out performance here. With his points last week, he secured the status of the seed at the Australian open next week and he has no reason to force this one. I expected him to give up here, and he might as well do so, but it seems like he will play here just to get things over with. Querrey needs to play some matches, he can hold his serve and everything points to his win, and this handicap can go through with a single break. Details

Sousa made quite an accomplishment last year with an ATP title but he has yet to prove himself. This is usually the hardest task for the tennis player as he now has a reputation and no one will take him lightly. Rosol got into the rhythm by the end of last year. He did alright in faster conditions and the Australians have even made them faster this year. The Portuguese started the year with a defeat against Hanescu and he said he is not happy with his game and that he's still trying to find himself. With a pretty defensive style, he's an ideal opponent for Rosol who likes to dictate the tempo. I will go for a Czech's win with a handicap because I believe in his convincing win here. The Portuguese can only hope for a large number of unforced errors by Rosol, but I believe he got that out of his system against Nadal. Details

Some will say Brands played poorly yesterday. Of course, that's the case as he lost convincingly but Monfils didn't give him a moment of rest. He was focused, aggressive on the return, vibrant and it was not that Frenchman who only thinks about jump-shots and exhibitions. He has beaten Mayer in all four game and he has covered the spread in the last 2. Interestingly enough, the German thinks he hasn't won a single set in those matches even though he has won two. This says enough about the respect he has for the Frenchman. He has played 3 sets in all three matches here and he made things complicated yesterday and almost gambled away a sure win. Monfils noticed that, he sees himself in this tournament and he should be able to progress. I expect him to go through with a handicap especially since he has a match against Nadal tomorrow and he doesn't want to go into the finals tired. After all, he only spent 49 minutes in the quarter-finals. When he's in the zone, when he's professional he's a Top 10 player. He showed that in Shanghai last season. Details

Only four times in the history of this tournament did it happen that a qualifier reached semi final. Gojowczyk didn't have an ATP win prior to this tournament. He managed to get through the first round of US Open last year, and afterwards went to the locker room to ask Nadal for an autograph. His voice was trembling yesterday when talking about a possibility to play against Nadal, he couldn't finish the sentence. True, he won six matches here, but that only raises the question of fatigue. Given all the circumstances, it all seems like an under to me. He'll may be a bit tense in the first set, which will therefore remain at fewer games, maybe he'll be defeated later, but he'll have a hard time getting this match over this margin. He made a great thing when he reached the semi final, it was a great success. He risked, attacked, but he's got nothing on the best player in the world. Lack of experience, nervousness, and fatigue only speak in favor of this prediction. Details

Brown passed the qualifications here just like last season. This season, he's been even more convincing as he has won all three matches in 2 sets. Last season, he played in the main tournament, took a set against Ferrer and the conditions suit his aggressive style. This is Dodig's first match of the season and I expect an open duel in which both players can dominate their serve. Brown can get into a crisis but he has been playing good tennis here for the past two years and that's why he should drag this into an over. Details

Compatriots and peers, but the difference is obvious. Struff has won 5 out of 6 head-to-heads, all 3 from last season. Struff has entered Top 100 lst year, Gojowczyk was in Top 150 only for a while. In addition, Struff has had a very good end of the season while his compatriot ended it with 3 consecutive defeats. Gojowczyk got through the first round of the qualifiers after only 30 minutes but he has played against the 16-year-old home players. Struff lost a set against Safwat but the Egyptian is in Top 200 and took a set against Brands in the main tournament last season Struff has a specific style, uncharacteristic for younger players (forcing the backhand slice and offensive forehand) and their head-to-head is a good indicator that he knows how to handle his compatriot. The stakes are lower as the season has only started, but it's just a precaution. Details
