Sorensen has lost only 10 games in 3 matches. He did get easy qualifications and Munoz hasn't played in a while but the Irishman proved that he is trustworthy. His ranking is terrible as he had to start from scratch. He showed what he's capable of 2 months ago when he reached the finals from qualifications in Turkey. Bega is here as Olaso didn't feel like playing. The Spaniard gave his best to end his match as quickly as possible and Bega got his first indoor challenger win. He arrived to this tournament after an invitation and that's where freebies should stop. The Irishman would normally be in the competition for Top 200. I cannot say this for the Italian and I believe Sorensen will prove the difference in quality that surely exists. Details

Groth has a cannon in his serve and a sling-shot on the return. He played 3 sets in the first two round and yesterday he got 2 breaks in 16 return games. Of course, he had 21 aces and held his serve during those 2 hours. Rice played 3 sets too, even though he allowed only a single break-point. Anyway, it is hard to imagine a match in these conditions in which Groth doesn't get at least one extended set. With him, an over for this margin should not come into question. Details

Escobar is a home player with an unusual story. He hasn't played since the end of 2009, and he came back to tennis courts in August this year. He had a lot of good results on the futures, especially in this city (finals and semifinals). Considering the time he started the season, his ranking is very good. His opponent is the Austrian who decided to come here for unknown reasons. He came to South America for the first time this season, and his last game was forfeited futures in Croatia. He hasn't played challengers for four months, so I believe the home player has a bigger advantage here, as his ranking suggests. Details

Before this tournament started, the odds on Nadal not winning the title were @1,3. He got the easier group, got to the finals without a single defeat and beat Federer yesterday but I still think the Spaniard will not get his first Masters title. Federer didn't have the usual problems against Nadal for one simple reason. Top spins here are not as problematic as on the open courts. Federer lost because he lacked confidence and the quality when it was most important. Djokovic has that. He was in a far stronger group and was very focused yesterday. He seemed quite satisfied after the match. And most importantly, I think Nadal cannot do better than what he's doing now while you can still see some room for improvement with the Serbian player. Djokovic is going for his 3rd title, he has a run of 21 wins and his conversion from passive to active game is much better than Nadal's, especially indoors. Details

Gabashvili often plays without any compromise, but he is dangerous once he gets into his game. He beat the title-defending Becker here yesterday and he is not short of confidence. Seppi himself said that he expects his toughest task so far. He is aware just how dangerous the Russian can be in these conditions. They've played on the concrete on three occasions, 2 of which were indoors and they went over this margin on all 3 occasions. Details

Lacko lives in Bratislava and often has his training sessions in this arena. Last year he played in the semi-finals here. He had a tough match against Mecir in the second round but he played great tennis. This is Struff's ninth match in 2 weeks. He saved 4 match-points. Stakhovksky had 2 in a row on his serve and 2 on his return. He failed, but I believe he did Lacko a favor as he had an easy task yesterday. The Slovakian player berated himself for being to relaxed, but this won't happen today. He is aware of Struff's quality and he should be able to get into new finals at his home court. Details

The story is quite simple. Ferrer is out and is going home after this match. Wawrinka has to win and then root for Nadal. He could have had 2-0 after first 2 matches. He beat Berdych and then lost against Nadal in two tie-breaks. This is because he showed too much respect and he won't have that problem today. Ferrer came here running on fumes. He's been playing for 7 weeks in a row and played in the finals in the last 3 weeks. He didn't get a break-point against Berdych, and he couldn't do anything on the first serve return. Perhaps I would skip this if the Swiss was playing the second match of the day, but this way, he'll focus more easily. Details

Even though this season is disappointing for Stakhovsky, here, he's got a chance to fight for Top 100 at the end of the season. Copil lost the Geneva semifinals last week. He had two good wins, but then lost to Struff convincingly thanks to his backhand slice. That's Ukrainian's advantage, and he should use the Romanian's weaker backhand side by coming out to front more often. They only played once against each other, in the Bucharest qualifiers this season, and Copil lost a break there. Besides the strong service, I don't see any other advantages for the Romanian player. He barely defeated Haider who came from the clay courts, and the Austrian was a nice fit for him because of his weak return in conditions like these. Details

I'm aware of the risks when it comes to betting on Hajek, but I calculated even that into my stake. The Czech forfeited last week, but it seems his problem isn't serious because he got the invitation for the Davis Cup finals. He's very motivated here. He's on the edge of coming back to Top 100 here, and that means Australian Open and a big check at the beginning of the next season. He's been motivated in Bratislava for the last few years, which means a lot. Sikora has only one indoor challenger match in his career, and he won two games in it. Last year, he lost to Veger in the qualifiers here. He didn't cover the handicap even then. Hajek is prone to difficult defeats, but in this case, I don't believe he'll gamble away his chance, which means a win in the handicap. Details

Vesely cannot be a favorite in an indoor match under any circumstances. The Czezh is the best young player in Top 100 but only due to his clay matches. Even when he knew that he will play on the US Open, he stayed in Europe on clay. He didn't bother preparing for concrete and has only played a single match in the past month due to injury. Pouille has been playing consistently. He reached the semi-finals two weeks and lost against Struff (German reached the finals). Even the Frenchman prefers clay but has an aggressive forehand and likes to go forward. The Czech's biggest problem is his return in these conditions. He has a serve that tends to go over 2000 km/h but other aspects of his game need more practice. Vesely is a year older and has been rampant in the junior categories but Pouille took a set against him on both occasions. Considering those matches when the Czezh was ahead of his generation (serving over 200 km/h back then) and his lack of matches in the past month, the Frenchman shouldn't have a problem getting a set. He has been playing well in the past few weeks and he only lost a single serve against Struff. Details

Khachanov is a player of the future, there is no doubt about that and he has already proved his worth this season, but he will not win easily today. He barely beat Fabbian last night who couldn't count on his. He lost the break advantage in the first and the third set and it took him 2.5 hours to win. It was a match with 39 break-points, something you don't see in indoor matches even at the ITF level. Struff has the experience, he had a day of rest and he beat the tricky Frenchman with giving only a single break-point. Moreover, the German has a tricky backhand slice that will cause many problems to Kachanov. Karlovic used this weapon to cut int his aggressive forehand that has many problems with such low balls. Stuff is an indoor player, he is more rested and the 17-year-old Russian conceded 19 break-points against a clay player yesterday. I don't see how he could win and Struff will use his chances. Such low odds on Federer are probably a reflection of the importance of yesterday's match. The Swiss played the Basel finals last week and he needed a win here to qualify for London. Judging by his mood, I don't think he will stop now. He is not a player who wears himself down and he was quite energetic against Anderson. Now he's finally got his form and he seems to be enjoying the game. Kohlschreiber has never covered this spread and had seven chances. He only took the set once in the tie-break. It's normal for him, he shows too much respect and this will cost him the win. This handicap could go through with a single break and I consider this to be a very good wager. Even if Federer plays below expectations, I think the German will "find a way" to help him. It has always been this way. Even in Cincinnati, when Federer was having more problems than now. Details

In 5 head-to-heads, this bet went through every time. They had 4 tie-breaks and they even had 12 games in the first sets. Djokovic complained that his opponent served lightning bolts and he had many problems with his return, even though he was facing a player from the challenger level. He has never found a good solution for Isner's serve and this will be even tougher today because the conditions are good for tall servers. I expect another close start and the situation can change after that, depending on who gives out after the first set. Details

This bet went through in three of their last four head-to-heads, every time in an indoor court. Lopez had under 10 games in the first set only twice in the last 10 matches, and only once against a weak futures level player. Wawrinka is not weaker in his last 10 matches, he has 7-3 in favor of this bet. I expected significantly lower odds. Details

Verdasco was out in the first round last week and forfeited the match a week before that due to injury. He is not in the best form and his motivation is in doubt. He beat Gulbis but what a match it was. He won 87 out of 189 points on unforced errors. The Spaniard said last week that he is more interested in doubles in which he is chasing London. Gasquet is a different story. He needs the win because he is fighting for London singles. Everyone who watched him in Basel could see him tank the match. He simply didn't have the power after the Asian tour and winning Moscow. He says he is ready and I believe he will confirm that. He can pass this handicap with a singe break an Verdasco didn't even give his return a shot in the last two matches. Details

Sobkin is an experienced and steady coach, and his statement for the Russian media is a statement from a man who has a pragmatic perspective of tennis, even if he's a coach to one of the players. Tursunov has been nominated for the comeback of the year, and he's probably been playing the best tennis in the last few years in this second part of the season. Here, he got to the semifinals convincingly. Youzhny played two and a half hours yesterday. He didn't lose a service, but Sobkin says he has cold issues, and the fatigue is an even bigger factor because of that. Youzhny had a lot of health issues lately, and considering their shape, Tursunov should be the favorite. Because of what Sobkin said, and he's been with Youzhny from the beginning of his career, the stakes are even higher. Details

Dimitrov won his first ATP title last week, and he demolished Stepanek here. The experienced Czech complained of fatigue and cold last week, he had three successful indoor weeks and I believe he came to Basel drained. Dolgopolov is defending a lot of points this week, which means he is motivated. He played a good first round match, which is often key for him. I don't see why Dimitrov is suddenly such a favorite? He won Stockholm last week, but he was a strong favorite in every match until the finale and he was completely out of form before Sweden. The Ukrainian is a player of outbursts and I believe he can win a set. I wouldn't be surprised if they were a lot of oscillation, so I don't recommend the handicap. Anyway, he is underestimated here and he should at least win a set. To those braver, I recommend the Ukrainian's win. Details

It is more a question for a sports psychologist, but for some reason Baghdatis plays his best tennis against the best players. This is probably because he is under no pressure to win, and relaxes, and then he is a Top 20 player for sure. He has a long match history vs Del Potro. In their five official matches he was left without a set only once, and even then they played two extended sets, so he has the game. The Argentinian did not impress yesterday, he needs more time to adjust, and this is a new chance for the Cypriot. I'll be going for a set this time, not the handicap, as I believe he will win a set. In case the match goes to three sets, who knows how he will react if he wastes a chance to win once again. Details

Janowicz is not playing convincingly. He has been having problems with his shoulder for a while now and I doubt he would play if he weren't in a difficult situation. Next week he will be defending 625 points and every win is important for him. If the situation was different, I believe he wouldn't be playing because he can't finish a match without physio's help before and after the match. Sousa has 10 ATP indoor wins this season even though he has a reputation of a clay player. He plays safely, he isn't afraid of stronger names which he demonstrated on several occasions in the last months. This was covered by Carreno-Busta in the first round, who is far more prominent clay player than the Portuguese. Since I wouldn't be surprised if the Pole lost today, I think this +3,5 is a very good bet. Details

Though this is not suggested by their first and only match so far, I am going to bet on no breaks in the first set. Karlovic beat Berdych without winning a break point. The conditions here are much faster than in Moscow, the ball stays lower, which makes him struggle on the return. In Moscow the ball bounced higher, the surface was slower, and he had more time to attack. Pospisil is an aggressive player who will mostly look for fast points on the return. This is usually not a a good combination in a match like this one. He has a good serve, he often plays tie-breakers and knows who he's against. He will undoubtedly hold his serve as well, and wait for his chance. In these conditions I expected much worse odds on a no-break first set. For those who do not have access to WillHill, bets such as a tie-break in the first set or over 12.5 games offer a solid alternative. Details
