Almagro was rampaging in the first two rounds, but the opponents were appropriate. Then he started against Nishikori with two lost serves. Somehow he managed to get through that set and the Japanese got injured, little bit of the knee, a bit more of the back but he was basically not coming back to the middle of the court. The Spaniard somehow lost the set and then won in the third one after all, while his opponent could barely move. The quality of play that Dolgopolov and Del Potro have shown was something completely different. Both of them were in an excellent mood and the points were attractive one after the other. The Ukrainian had a set and a break, but when the Argentinian raised the game it all went in the opposite direction. Dolgopolov admitted he is powerless, which he rarely does even against the best. The Spaniard reached the semifinals through favorable circumstances and he didn't impress me. On the other hand, Del Potro had a more difficult draw and better performance. Almagro has two finals on concrete since 2008, both of them on the tournaments of Series 250 and he was losing there majorly. These are no conditions for him, this is not his season and the Argentinian is a great favorite here. The Spaniard doesn't know how to play defensively and to try and outplay Del Potro in these conditions is impossible. This is a win in two sets of the seed. Details

You have to hand it to Dodig for this tournament. He defeated Tsonga, but the Frenchman is still not recovered fully from his knee injury. Last time Dodig and Raonic played, the Canadian was completely lost. He had just started working with Ljubicic who made him play aggressively, and he could not hit a normal backhand. Now it's a whole different story. He won a tournament last week, has a score 22-4 since Montreal and his serve is fantastic. Here he played in the finals last year, but now his playing is miles better. He still did not offer a break-ball, the conditions are very fast, and his rhythm is to attack after the first ball. He did not allow rhythm to anyone and I believe he won't to Dodig too. He is just full of confidence, which can be seen in the way he is playing this week. A small statistic that goes to show about this prognosis: Dodig played two finals this year, lost both in straight sets. In some other circumstances I would go for over on the games, but this time I am convinced that Raonic is playing the best tennis of the season. Details

The margin probably looks very high, but this is Isner we are talking about. I expected even bigger margin considering the odds. It is crucial for the American to find his rhythm today. His performances in the last two rounds were far from good, but his serve was excellent. He served 47 aces through 6 sets and allowed only two break chances for his opponents. True, he was playing against the players that aren't that good on the return, but Berdych could also have lots of trouble with Isner's hard shots. Last week he was harmless on the return against Raonic, and he only played one match on this tournament so far. His performances are getting worse with every match and the Czech admitted that he is tired. Although Isner won against him both times they played on hardcourt, today I think ''over'' is the smartest bet. Isner played three-set matches against Wu and Bautista, and three sets were played both times against Berdych on hardcourt also. When Isner is on the court, then this margin could be surpassed even in two sets. Details

I can still remember Nieminen's and Dodig's last encounter very vividly. They faced each other on Australian Open. Nieminen won against Haas in the first round, and Dodig was struggling against Wu (but, truth be told, he was slightly injured back then). Although they played a 5-set match last time, Dodig's service game was excellent. He served 33 aces and, even more importantly, he saved 17 break points. Dodig lost only one out of 26 of his service games. They played 5 sets mainly because Nieminen won two tie-breaks. Today they play on much faster surface and that is very good news for Dodig. He didn't lose a single service in the last two rounds and winning against Tsonga says pretty much everything about his current form. Nieminen was struggling against Przysiezny in the past round. The Polak entered the tournament as lucky loser and Nieminen only had two-break points in the first two sets. Dodig is probably playing his best tennis right now, and he certainly doesn't lack confidence. On the other side, Nieminen had lots of troubles with injuries recently and it is a big question is he really at 100%. He won two matches in Tokyo but now he has the toughest challenge ahead of him. This handicap could be covered even in three sets if needed. I do have great faith in Dodig's serve and he should also have lots of chances to win points on the return. If he managed to win 25 out of 26 service games in their last encounter, then he should be even more dominant on the fast surface in Tokyo. His performances in the first two rounds are a clear statement in favor of this theory. Details

If US tournaments and Grand Slams are left out of the equation, Isner has won only one ATP match up to Beijing. Against Wu he proved this wasn't a coincidence. Although the Chinese player appears in challenger tournaments without much success, he lost his first service game in the third set. Wu had the first set and 4-1 in the tie break for the second but he proved too inexperienced. Bautista has 25 ATP wins this season and hadn't given a single break point to Dimitrov. The Spaniard has a strong serve and patience on the baseline which should be a strong point in longer exchanges. Although my choice for Isner is more games, he could lose this one. He should have lost against the Chinese player and these 2,5 games covers a possible tie-break drama. Still the Spaniard could give us a surprise. If you can call it a surprise since Isner plays poorly outside the U.S. and Beijing is no exception. Details

After winning against Hanescu, Tipsarevic complained of "his toughest match in the career." He had problems with food poisoning, he spent three days more or less in bed, but won against Hanescu. I cannot take the Romanian seriously. Two weeks ago he lost against a junior Russian player who had his ATP debut. But he did Dolgopolov a favor by keeping Janko busy for two and a half hours. I will go for the Ukrainian's win with bookies that treat retirement after first sett as a loss, or you can pick a one ball one if possible. There are more reasons for this. Food poisoning, receiving treatment for knee problems, the problem with his right wrist he complained many times before. Dolgopolov served well in the first round and he can be trusted that he familiarised himself with the court after winning a match. His form is generally on the incline. Of course, the stake is higher because of the Serbian's problems. Details

Tsonga will do his part on the serve. It's a classic move with him and he serves well even if the rest of the play isn't good. Dodig may not give such a first impression, but he is a strong server who can cover the net on short returns. This is why he is fighting for London where the best couples will play at the end of the season. They played on grass once and the first set ended with a tie-break. They played 33 games and two ended with a break with no one winning more than 30% on the return. These are very fast conditions and players have trouble adjusting and Tsonga confirmed this. All of this implies good resistence from Dodig who served well in the first round and this is why I selected the over for the first set. until the Frenchman warms up... Details

Head-to-heads sometimes bear no significance, but now they are very important. Simon and Granollers are playing their sixth head-to-head and, until now, the Frenchman won only one. He was the favorite four times (odds under @ 1.3), and the last time approximately like this time. That did not help, because the Spaniard has a style which Simon does not like at all. He can play defensively, he is not afraid of long rallies, and he can go forward to hit every shorter ball, especially serves. One should certainly try to bet on Granollers, but considering their history, this bet seems excellent and worthy of a larger stake. Details

It is hard for me to imagine that Del Potro can play well already in the first match. He did not know whether he was going to play here or not until the end, and I cannot say he played well in the US. It is questionable how well his wrist is, because it is a serious injury. He was winning due to his reputation. Baghdatis, however, has no health issues, but has issues with his shape. Actually, more with self-confidence. That is why I will not go for him, but I sure am going for an over. The Argentinian has nine overs in a row for this margin and two US Open matches, which had more than three sets because he did not have the rhythm. Baghdatis has good experience against him, especially if we are looking at this bet. All four head-to-heads went into over and the Cypriot is defending the last year's semi-finals. So, the faster court are fine to him. It smells like three sets, but this margin is okay even for two. Details

Delbonis can't play indoors. This quarter finals is the result of a favourable draw. First he beat a junior player with a wild card, then Pospisil lost the match agaainst him in a very unfortunate manner. The Canadian gave his opponent only one break-ball, but failed to break the Argentinian's serve (0/6 on break points). He succumbed to pressure in the tie-breaks, played nervously and lost the match. Melzer is too experienced to miss this opportunity. These are the Argentine's only two ATP wins of the season outside clay courts. The Austrian has the return and the game that comes to the fore in these conditions. He already beat one left-handed player in the second round and he will be ready for another one. I do not see how he can lose a set against the Argentine clay specialist who has already spent his luck in this tournament. Details

Quinzi is an Italian junior who won the Junior Wimbledon this year. It seems he decided to skip the futures level, and decided to go straight for the challengers. While in Italy he could count on invitations from local tournaments, he passed the qualifiers for this one. In the last round he beat a local player 7-6 6-3, also a teenager, which attests to the level of the qualifiers. He has two victories in the main draw sheet, but not against opponents on Elias´ level. The Portuguese player played the finals here last year, and started this season on a good roll, but he had some problems with his elbow lately. He played the quarter-finals last week, an admirable achievement seeing how he played an indoors Davis Cup match the week before. He is even more of a favorite than the odds would have it. I will opt for a handicap since Quinzi did not cover for it in the last two weeks. He lost to Lapentti who has not been playing a lot, and to another youngster Velotti, so both covered this handicap. Also Elias has an assuring 11-4 average against left handed players, another argument for this bet. Details

Pashanski and Haider Maurer played an interesting match yesterday. The Austrian player won the first set before losing nine games in a row. Pashanski managed to destroy his cool with his usual provocation, so the Austrian had lost it completely. Speaking of his opponent later on, Haider Maurer said he acted like a 10 year-old, something he could never do on the ATP tour. He also complained on the low temperatures and rain. Pashanski won against Montanes last week, completely outplaying him, but was helpless against Panfil - the Polish played scored 10 aces against him, leaving him with four unconverted break balls. Panfil is brimming with self-confidence now, having played his best tennis yet the last week. On the other hand, winning against Haider Maurer is not to be ignored, but it is the classical Pashanski thing - he plays best at this level, but mostly losing his matches. I can see no changes since the last week. Despite playing a lot the last week, Panfil stated that he is not tired. He won against Machado in the first round, and I believe he deserves to be seen as a bigger favorite - he commanded a 1,6 quota, but it should be more today. Details

It is not a coincidence that Safarova leads 6-2 in their head-to-head matches. The Australian has had a lot of problems here with the two-arm backhand, and she practically pulled all the way through her career by playing to her stronger forehand side. As a left-hander, Safarova is awkward for Stosur as most of her balls go to the backhand side of right-handed players. The Czech is especially dangerous here as she has quality serves, which means she will get a lot of soft return balls from Stosur's backhand. However, the key reason why to play on Safarova is her form. She won Quebec and is currently on a run of seven wins in a row. She finally regained self-confidence and is on a roll. Another piece of information goes in her favour. Until the tournament in Canada she had only 15 wins in the season, and two of them were against the Australian. She won all three tie-breaks in those matches and that was when she didn't have as much self-confidence as she has now. Everything points to another Safarova win. Details

Last week, Andujar played in a tournament on clay in Poland. He went down to challenger-level because clay is the only surface that suits him, but he struggled even in that tournament. Even though he was the second seed, he spent almost five hours of play in the first two rounds. He was exhausted and Starace took advantage of that. The Spaniard still played on clay on Friday, and now he is in for a great change. We have high odds against Zemlja because he is out of shape and has not played since US Open, but this is an ideal draw. The Spaniard won only two indoor matches in his career, including challengers, so that is why I chose the Slovene. This handicap should cover it, even if he lost a set somehow. Details

Cuevas is now obviously finally ready, because he signed up for three tournaments in a row. During the last months, he used the protected ranking only on Grand Slams and without enough preparation. Regardless, he beat Mannarino and took a set from SImon and Tipsarevic. Davydenko is off his game. He is lost somewhere between the end of his career and unreal ambitions regarding the Top 20. After New York, he admitted that the end might be near. I think that a set is certainly better than handicap, because Cuevas is not a player of who I expect to win serves. Also, considering Davydenko's play, I would not be surprised if he lost a set due to a bad streak and then later outplays the Uruguayan. In short, Cuevas, even when unprepared, was taking sets from players better than him, and Davydenko often lost sets from players of far lesser skill. Also, Cuevas surprised Davydenko three years ago in Moscow by winning two sets. The Russian was favored by more people back then than now. Details

Bedene's series look great and he won his eighth match in a row. I won't pay attention to his wrist issues since that a chronic injury, but today his trip should be over. In second round junior Edmund brought him to a tie-break of the third set. Yesterday Mesaros tortured him for two and a half hours. The Croat won the first set, and had a break in the second and the third. Bedene won based on his reputation because Mesaros just recently entered the Top 200. That kind of escaping can't go on forever, and Ungur definitely has the quality to end Bedene's series. Yesterday Bedene played in doubles, and today he'll be out on the court at 11 AM. That has to take its toll on him since the day before yesterday he spent two and a half hours n court, yesterday it was four hours (counting the doubles), and last week he won Banja Luka. Ungur has thrown out Darcis and Kuznetsov, and he by far has better quality than Mesaros and Edmund who would have thrown out the Slovenian if they had had more finesse. Details

Whichever way I put it, it is hard to understand such a high rate on Mayer. Berlocq reached his first indoor quarterfinal on this level thanks to circumstances. First it was Vesely, a young Czech who spends most of the season on clay and has problems on open concrete as well. Then it was Kohlschreiber who held the serve for the entire second set although he could barely move. Meanwhile, Mayer had an excellent indoor appearance in Davis Cup against Belluci who plays similar to the Argentinian. The German destroyed Belluci then with low balls and today I expect a similar thing. The Argentinian will do little on the return and defending cannot work all the time indoors. If no new lucky circumstances occur for Berlocq, I expect a strong win of the German with spread. Details

Since the start of the tournament it seemed like this would be the best tournament of the career for Panfil. He didn't get an invitation, but he used that to his advantage. He filled himself with confidence during the three very convincing victories in the qualifiers, and his performances in the main tournament were also very good. He is probably playing the best tennis of his life and today he will have Schwartzman on the other side of the net. He hasn't lost a single service game in the first two rounds and yesterday he used a very smart tactics against Pahsanski, a player that won against the first seeded player (Montanes) in the round before. Schwartzman played in the final last week and he defeated two Italian players this week so that is why odds for him winning today are pretty low. As it was mentioned, Panfil is playing the best tennis of his career and he should be able to take at least one set today, and possibly even win the match. Schwartzman is well-known for his good plays on clay, but his game is much more dependent on his opponents mistakes than on his own good shots. Panfil won a couple of matches similar to this one in the last couple of months and today he will have the crowd on his side. That is also an important factor as the atmosphere on the challengers is very similar to those on Davis Cup matches. Details

Olivetti landed 20 aces over two sets in the first round. He held on to his serve until the end, saving all four break-points. Zverev was a tricky opponent for him as he tends to block the serve, and then rush forward. Becker is far more aggressive, which is why he is good for this bet. Not only is he too aggressive on the return, but on his own serve as well, which is why major ups and downs in his performance shouldn't come as a surprise. He showed those last week in Luxembourg, too. I know what to expect from Olivetti and he can pull of two or three service winners per game against anyone in these conditions. I expect he will do the same to Becker, and I wouldn't be surprised if the German gives away a game or two with his approach. Details

Fuchsovics achieved his first ATP win in his first ATP appearance. Though it sounds great, he only won because Chardy played badly. The Frenchmen complained about the lack of training and too soft play, and the young Hungarian used the opportunity. I'll give him that, but he will have trouble today with keeping his service on the same level as yesterday. Kamke won an indoor challenger last week. Here he started with 0-2, and ended up winning easily against Gicquel. The same Gicquel left the Hungarian on only three games three weeks ago. The German is confident now, and it is not easy to get this kind of an ATP quarterfinal chance. I believe he will be highly motivated. He has far more quality than the Hungarian, especially on his return and I expect him to win in two sets. Fucsovics's last seven defeats were in two sets. Details
