The qualifications showed that the conditions in Doha are faster. A lot of players were dominant at their serve, but could hardly get a chance on return. I expect the same to happen today. This court should be in Karolina's favor, mostly because of her serve. Last week she played the first set against Coco without giving a break chance, but she earned only one. That is a double-edged sword. Last year, Karolina played two matches in Doha and opened both with a tiebreak. Earlier that season, of 22 played matches, 14 went over 9.5 games in the first set. This season, Karolina opened 9 out of 11 matches with over 9.5 games in the first set. That is no coincidence, she bases a lot on her serve, but the return is problem. Gasparyan has no experience against Karolina, but she does with her sister. In all four matches, they played at least one tiebreak, in last year's six sets they played, 5 tiebreaks. In the last two matches, all four sets went into tiebreak. Gasparyan's numbers are worse than Karolina's when it comes to overs, but we should say that this year she played first set over against Makarova and Ivanovic, who are at the same level as Pliskova. All in all, the first set should be tense. Gasparyan played two relevant matches this year, both in over. We have the matches against Krystina Pliskova and we have Karolina who has 10 over on this margin in 12 matches. Karolina played only one match in the last two weeks and she will need time to get into her rhythm, and I don't want to later depend on whether or not she finds her game. Something Ivanovic did against Gasparyan in St. Petersburg. Details

Coco had no break points in the first round against Karolina Pliskova, while allowing her opponent only one break point in the first set. Coco will focus on serve today again, there is no doubt about that. Looking at last year, she went over this margin against Stosur, Allertova, Kvitova, Lisicki, Maria, Karolina Pliskova, Safarova and a few more players. Mladenovic can fire serves of over 200km/h, her forehand is powerful as well and all of that plus Dubai's fast surface makes her a dangerous player. Both players have great serves but they also have questionable return. Dropping service games early in the match is not an option and I'm sure we're in for another serve-dominated first set. Details

Not counting in the forfeit against Puig, Bencic played 12 matches this season. Of the 12, seven of them went over today's margin, four in two played sets. Her indoor record this season is 2-1 in favor of the over. Pavlyuchenkova, on the other hand, played 8 matches this season, and three went over this margin. And in two matches she played at least one tiebreak (so realistically she could have taken them into over as well) and against Kerber she played 20 games. So statistically, this margin has a solid basis. Pavlyuchenkova reacted well yesterday after a bad first round. She played well, but then dropped in the second set, which Witthoeft used to some degree. I expect Bencic to react today like she did after the first round. She pointed out that she had not trained at the center court and that caused problems against Beck. But she has now played a match.
Looking at their game styles, they are not very different. They both have strong strokes, they are strong in rallies, and they can be very efficient at serving. These odds, and with that we have a formed margin, are made based on Bencic. But we should keep in mind that Pavlyuchenkova is played at home and her score is 21-1 in her last 22 matches. That is no coincidence, because Pavlyuchenkova loves to play in controlled conditions. But so can Bencic, and she proved that the previous weekend. The margin is pretty low for a match between two players like them, especially because we can expect a lot of battle in the rallies. Besides, I am convinced that we will see a tiebreak today, which is suggested by their stats and playing styles. Details

This prediction imposes itself after the preview. It is true that Gasparyan covered this handicap only once this season (first match of the season), but today she is facing an opponent who is coming here just to 'get over with it'. If she could she would withdraw from this. Jovanovski is having a lot of problems at the start of the season. A shoulder rupture did its part and she will have a longer break after today's match. I don't think she will risk anything here, there's no need for that. With that, the court in St. Petersburg, especially the center court, proved to be somewhat faster, and Jovanovski's serve and strokes are critical at the start of the season. Not even 20 days after the Australian Open I don't believe anything could have changed drastically. If it had, then she would be playing last weekend. But she didn't, which is saying enough about her fitness, that is the lack of it. Anything but Gasparyan's convincing win here would be a big surprise. Last year her indoor record was 23-5 indoor, but she forfeited two matches. With that, she also lost to Pavlyuchenkova (19-1 indoor in the last two seasons) and Friedsam who later lost Linz finale to Pavlyuchenkova. Jovanovski didn't play indoor last season, and her career record is 19-15, and in the last three season it is 4-5. Details

I had a chance to follow Beck on the first three tournaments of the season. She seemed powerless against Riske, even though she won a set. Then she defeated Naru in a match with 13 lost service games, lost to Bertens, and then here achieved the result of her carer when it comes to Grand Slams. But she had some luck with the draw, domestic wild-card player Hon, Bascinszky, and Siegemund who caused two upsets but he couldn't repeat such performance against Beck. With all that, she had some neck problems, but she wouldn't use them as an alibi.
All of these three matches were going towards Beck's win from the start, she played well and relaxed, but she had the result right from the start. I will compare today's match to that against Bertens Hobart. Beck had problems from the start, while Bertens played very well. Her attitude toward such matches came into light then, she simply gave up.
Kerber, on the other hand, managed to win against Doi, but then showed how a real Top 10 player reacts. She was much better against Dulgheru, and then defeated Brengle by 8 games. I am convinced that we will see Kerber even better than in the previous match. Beck has no solutions for Kerber's game, she lacks the quality. With that, she will have problems with her serve. Quality difference is definitely on Kerber's side, she has been improving and Beck will be behind from the start. She will then start doubting her performance, strokes and we should point out the pressure of playing in a Grand Slam 4th round for the first time ever. Details

Kerber covered this handicap three times against Brengle. Even last year when she lost the first set. Kerber played an awful match tactically, was too passive, and had numerous errors. But losing one game in the second and the third set showed the difference between these two. Earlier last season in Stuttgart, Brengle only had four games, after two big wins by the American (Garcia, Kvitova). They've faced each other in Brisbane this year, too, and Brengle had three games. What's the difference? Everything Brengle can do, Kerber can do much better. Also, Kerber was saving herself against Doi in the first round here. But, top players can play one or two bad matches on a tournament, now a whole series. That's what the difference is between these two. Reaction against Dulgheru in the second round was really good. Truth be told, Kerver didn't cover this handicap, but she also said she played better than in the first round, and there's still room to get better. Where else can she do that but against a player she's beaten convincingly three times already? Brengle passed Coco and Larsson, the first one has a bad serve, the second one had over 60 errors. She outplayed Larsson tactically, but that's what Kerber will be doing to her today. She showed it in Brisbane, leaving Brengle with 43% first points serve, and only three games. Today's match is even more important, it's Grand Slam, and Kerber will very likely boost her game compared to the first two rounds. With an approach like that one, Brengle won't fare much better than she did in Brisbane. Details

There is no margin or handicap that could be considered too low at Azaraenka right now. She allowed the opponents less than 3 games per match this season and has covered this margin in 4 out of 6 matches. She lost 4 games against Kerber, which is right on the margin. Her body language is perfect, she was after perfection in her game and was not happy after losing points. I have never seen her this motivated. She reminds me of Radwanska from Tianjin last season. The Pole needed title there and she played Kovinic in the final. Kovinic was limited to three games in total. She couldn't deal with Radwanska. Azarenka's footwork is perfect and getting a point against her is really tough. Van Uytvanck was limited to only 19 points. Koviniv doesn't have the quality to stand up to Azarenka at the moment. She played with a bandaged right shoulder here in the first round and her serve was bad. It turned out to be well stats-wise but that is just because of Crawford. Azarenka will have a chance to get a point after each of her opponents' points. Details

Barthel played 29 matches on hard court last season. Out of those 29, 18 went over this margin. She didn't go over only against hard-hitters like Konjuh and Kvitova. The match against Konjih was the first one of the season, Kvitova is a world of her own. She went over with Safarova, Mladenovic, Bondarenko, Lephenko, Govortsova, Hantuchova and stayed under with Zhan, Jang, Marino, Zhao - matches in which she was a big favorite. Bather cannot win matches against opponents with powerful serves easily. her return is the problem as it allows the opponents a lot. She will be faced with a powerful serve today as well. Osaka hit 45 aces in 4 matches here and won almost 80% of fist serve points. She will be around those numbers today as well because Barthel struggles against such opponents. But so does Osaka. She left only Dodin under this margin here but Dodin failed. Barthel served very well against Doi, won 75% of first serve points and she should have similar numbers today. Osaka is prone to ups and downs, she's young and inexperienced but she can play Barthel. Her matches against some similar players proved that. All of them were very tough and all as a rule had three sets. But, this margin can be covered even with one tie break, which is what I expect. Details

Dodin has two unders at this margin, Osaka two matches in three sets. Osaka's results here are much more relevant than Dodin's. Didin cannot be consistent is such consistent wins just like her opponent. Dodin's serve was great here, she lost one service games in two matches but 2 out of her 3 matches at the first tournaments finished in 3 sets. She played three sets with Crawford and fired pretty tough serves for the most part of the match. Osaka played three sets against Bonaventura yesterday but for over 70 minutes of game, which say it all about the speed of rallies. She lost the first set but than in the second and third set didn't lose her serve. Dodin went well over this margin in matches against Pliskova, Riske, Vanewghe and Krajicek. Osaka doesn't have such names in overs but Gibbs, Kontaveit, Robson and Cirstea finished over this margin with her. She also won one ITF match at the end of the season.
We have a clash of two young players, who have a chance to reach main draw. Their styles are similar, they're prone to tough matches with a log of games. On top of everything, the margin here is one game off compared to other bookies and we have to take advantage of that. Details

I've seen Agnieszka in the ITP league and she was fantastic. She got six wins, beat Kerber and Venus during the new year, and Krunić in straight sets here. Aga has to play the final, her fourth seed at the AO is at stake. Zhang won't be much of a challenge. She couldn't match her four years ago, not two years ago, she won't be able to today. Zhang doesn't have the strength to outplay Aga, not even stronger players than Zhang can. I didn't mess with the Polish player in the first round, she tends to have a slow start, like she said numerous times. Also, there was a danger of rain. It turned out to be the right call because the match was transferred indoors. This one will be played on open hardcourt, so I don't think Zhang stands a chance, regardless of her great numbers from the first round. Details

Kvitova lost in semis here last season to Bacsinszky in straight sets. Smitkova gave her a hard time the round before. However, Bacsinsky and Smitkova are not Zheng. Kvitova beat Duan by 8 and Jovanovski by 9 games at the start. Zheng reached semis here as well but with 3 matches in three sets. She didn't meet anyone as good as Kvitova and lost semis to Halep. Kvitova cannot afford a slip here. The surface suits here, while her opponents lost to hard-hitters like her badly last season. The Chinese simply doesn't do well against such game style.
This is already a good bet at this margin and these handicaps and it could get even better. It seems like main draw matches are postponed for tomorrow due to rain and could be played indoors. In that case, Kvitova's power and serve would be even tougher. Zheng lost to Keys by 7 last season indoors and to Venus by 8. I think this match will end around those numbers, no matter where it will be played. Details

Even though some bookmakers offered Friedsam's win with higher odds earlier today, it wasn't easy to catch them. I still think there's good value to the odds offered. Siniakova played six tough matches in straight sets in two weeks in France. She didn't win either of them convincingly, but the final results show she didn't give up on her game. She had to run a lot against Parmentier yesterday, over two hours. That definitely left trace, because her game is based on firm approach. Those are only two of the reasons why I trust Friedsam today. Parmentier showed all of Siniakova's weaknesses, but couldn't turn that to success. I'm convinced Friedsam can do it. She showed that losing her focus against Paszek in the first round was a coincidence, not a rule. The court suits her, her serve is doing great, and also the game after that. Too many things are going for Friedsam here, and the handicap's been set quite low, and can be done in three sets. Even though I'm convinced Friedsam will solve this in straight sets. Details

Karolina can't afford a mistake at the very start here. She asked for the invite, she's still in the plan for Singapore, and she needs a good performance for the Fed Cup final. So, she's definitely motivated. Dulgheru got only one win in her last nine matches, and her indoors score is 20/21 total. She was often beaten by players with an aggressive note - Ivanović beat her by eight points difference, Mladenovic nine, then Sasnovich seven, Zanevska seven, as well, Cepelova eight, even though she lost one set, Falconi ten... I see Karolina getting those numbers, even though she beat Linette by nine last week, a firm player quick on her feet. I don't see why she wouldn't do the same with Dulgheru. Details

Things are pretty straightforward here. Agnieszka needs this win for AIngapore, meaning she will try and do her best here. I expect her to be focused and determined from the very the start in an attempt to win this match as easily as possible. Her performance here reminds me of Tokyo, which she won without losing a single set by beating players much better than Kovinic. This is the first ever ATP final for the Montenegrin, which means a lot of emotions will be involved in this for her. Aga will take advantage of that, just like the fact Kovinic displayed quite a lot of inconsistency in the last three matches. Quality, performances, motivation and experience are Aga's strengths in this match. I expect her to win at least one set by 5 games, which should be enough for this margin. Details

Even though I had my doubts both about Riske and Babos ahead of the first round here, they ended up playing at a very high level. Granted, their opponents were not great but still, the impression both players left was very good. Tianjin turned out to have very fast conditions, with serve and power making the difference. Riske and Babos both have powerful serves, which they displayed in the first round. They also have the kind of power that worked well with he surface. Return, on the other hand, is not a strong suit for either player, meaning chances on return should be few and far between. This is a clash of two identical games styles and we're almost certainly in for one set with high numbers. Details

I don't want to deny Vinci's results lately, or her statement that she's playing without pressure. But she doesn't crush with her tennis, as we could have seen plenty times this summer. A convincing win here doesn't change that, and her better matches in Wuhan or US Open are long gone. She took four of five matches in Wuhan over this margin, and should have against Begu, too. At the US Open, only the match against King stayed under this margin (20 games). Mattek didn't have luck at the US Open (Serena in the third round), but this final is really important for her. She's finally 100% ready, both mentally and physically. She won four back-to-back matches here, and turned Vecino around after losing a set with no won games. But she took her three of four matches over the margin, too. Both are motivated, Mattek showed she's tough mentally, and Vinci showed she needs her strength against anyone in the last tournament, so she'll hardly get a tie-break here. Details
