A high margin, but I'm pretty sure this will be a blowout. CSKA lost three in a row after winning 30 in a row, and will be fully motivated to prove they're still best in Europe right now. Those defeats were not due to a crisis of their performance but due to playing top level opponents and losing matches that could have gone both ways. The negative streak will only push them to be fully committed to winning throughout the match, in a performance Milano will be unable to parry. The Moscow team covered this handicap in 5 of their 8 home games this season, 13 of 18 at home if we count in VTB league matches, against teams such as Himki, UNICS; Maccabi, Unicaja... Milano suffered bitter defeats in both Piraeus and Vitoria in this stage, and will face an even tougher job today as they're missing Gentile and James. I expect the Russian team to win by 20+ points. Encantada lost only the first two home matches (covering the handicap both times), and they concluded the first part of the championship with five consecutive home wins. Looking at the last season, they lost with a difference bigger than this one at home only in an irrelevant last match against Sagunto (-7), who were struggling to stay in the league, -6 against Aragon and Barcelona, who are a few levels above the rest of the league. They defeated Naturhouse at home in the last three seasons. The fact is that Naturhouse are stronger now, but the home team see their chance to continue the series and give a hard time to the second-placed team of the championship. Naturhouse are coming after a convincing defeat in Barcelona, and with lots of problems. The left back Thiagus (34 goals), pivot Javi Garcia (32 goals), and probably the right back Luis Felipe (42 goals) will miss the game. Also, the left wing Juanin Garcia (64 goals), and the important defensive player Garabaya are having injury issues. With all those difficulties, I doubt the guests will have to work hard to win. I hardly see a scenario where they can crush Cuenca with six or more goals difference. Details

Despite their game averaging at only 145 points, Rethymno are still among the fastest teams in the league, especially in transition. There are a few teams in the league whose defenses lower the averages significantly but when meeting faster-paced teams, Rethymno were very efficient. Skortopoulos's team is all about tough defense, rebounding, and transition leading into easy shots. With Schaftenaar back, Rethymno should be ablet o get their style back. They are on a 4-game losing run and expect reposnse today because they're the better team. Dramas opened the season with a very young team, played less productive games, but as they acquired new players, the offense got more productive. Their opponents never scored less than this margin in the last 8 games. They conceded at least 80 in 5 games and I don't think they'll be able to keep Rethymno under 70 or less points. Visitors scored 72 in the first h2h. Dramas play a different game now and I expect a more efficient game. Visitors scored at least 77 in the 6 h2h games over the past three seasons, with 79, 80, and 82 here. Details

AEK's ambition runs high and they have good rhythm, but I don't think they're task here will be easy. Panonios need to win, the new coach just took over and might bring the necessary response. Apart for the games from the start of the season in which Panioinons were getting the team together, nobody had it easy here. Home team limited their last 4 opponents to 73 or less points, including the top teams like Olympiacos (73), Aris (65) and PAOK (65). AEK, on the other hand, play a more efficient game, but went over this margin in only 2 out of 7 away games with fast paced Trikala (83) and in the nerve-wrecking finish with Kifisia (80). Panonios scored 77 home in the first head-to-head, but both teams changed a lot since. I expect a great fight and visitors to score 70-75 points max. New coach Hugaz insists on better defense and discipline which, combined with the atmosphere, could result in a very tough game. Details

Regardless of the fact these are the two defensively weakest teams in the league, I find this margin to be too high. Many factors speak in favor of this. In first place, the match is hugely important as the defeated team here has a 90% chance of getting relegated. Statistics also suggest Bourg play games at 157.7 points and have 14 unders and only 5 overs at this margin, while Boulogne average 162.8 with 12 unders and seven overs. Furthermore, all five previous matches these teams played in the past three seasons stayed under 160 points, including the one a month and a half ago at Boulogne. Under those circumstances, I doubt we'll be seeing elegance, more like a very nervous game with both teams fighting for survival. Bourg brought in Tissot as a new coach a few weeks ago, who immediately put a focus on defense. After an unsuccessful debut against Orleans, where the opponents made 17 three point shots, his style was noticeable against Chalon. Castano on the other hand wants his players to react after poor defending against Paris, and I expect them to be much more tougher today. They've already proven they can play well on defense, and will be facing an offensively rather limited team, who managed to score above 80 points only 4 times this season. This is a crucial game for both sides, a matter of life and death, and as such I find it hard to believe it will go above 160 points. Details

Before the start of this phase Ploiesti were the weakest team in the group, and after Brown and Lee left, they're arriving to Krasnodar as the absolute outsiders. The Romanian team used up the problems in Valencia, sensationally won in Spain, and the rest three matches put them in their place. They lost everything with at least 16 points of difference and conceded at least 84 points. Before today's match they lost their first center Lee for whom Bazarevic himself says he won't be easily replaced. Lokomotiv had an amasing 50-22 rebound record in the first match, and without Lee that dominance will be even more prominent considering the defense quality Lokomotiv have. Ploiesti's only chance, if it even exists, is in a faster game in which they would reach points easier, similarly as with Valencia. I don't see a way in which Lokomotiv will be able to defend themselves, who will have Delaney and Kalnietis as playmakers. Simona is in good shape, and Hendrix, Brown and Randolph make the frontcourt which dominated against CSKA. Lokomotiv have a good team with mobile centers, and are definitely able to destroy their opponents. Today I expect a clean win from Lokomotiv, and they could easily reach 100 points. Details

The margin might seem low at first but considering what is expected today, I think it's still too high. Efes and Olympiacos are among top defenses in Europe, with very high-quality individuals and coaches who put a lot of emphasis on the defensive end. Efes are on a two-game losing run in Euroleague and lost last week's game in Novgorod, in which the defense didn't work at all. They are 2-2 and another defeat would put them in a very tough situation ahead of the away game in Milan and the derby match with Fenerbahce. Olympiacos are, on the other hand, on a 4-0 record and don't plan to end the run. They have not conceded over 68 goals in 2015, with he away games being particularly dependent on defense, just like the road game with Apollon last Monday.
Statistically, this margin is set right, but they met more offense-oriented teams that boost the averages. I expect this game to be like those between Olympiacos and Zvezda that ended at around 130 points. I don't think either team will go over 70 points and I think the margin is a few points too high. Nanterre did 14 home games this season and didn't finish only three of them with a double-digit lead (derby matches with Limoges and Strasbourg and city derby with Paris). The final confirmation of their fine form was the match in Beublanc last Sunday, when they crushed the defending champions Limoges. Last week's defeat to Le Mans got things a bot complicated and Nanterre need to go for the win today. They beat Usak by 33 points in the first round, and with the situation in the group quite complicated, point-difference could matter in the end. Le Mans are top table on a 2-1 record, Usak are 1-2, and both Nanterre and Gussing 1-1. Gussing already reached their goals by making it to round two, surprised Le Mans, but they are not Nanterrs's quality. They lost to Kapfenberg by 14 points home over the weekend and are not set to meet a much better opponent in France. I expect the home team to win by at least 15-20 points. Details

The fact is that so far Iran's matches were on an average of 60 goals and this is, at first sight, a score-unimportant match... However, this should be all but a friendly match. This is a duel, a question of prestige and everyone will want to win. Macek clearly stated that, and the Saudians are quite motivated by last year's defeats, as well as the death of their king for whom they've been playing these last couple of matches. Last year these two teams played two matches, with 44 and 47 goals. The fact is that the teams have somewhat changed, but I still think this isn't a match which will go over 60 goals. Interestingly enough, the Iranians have two unders at this championship, against the defensive Bosnia and Herzegovina (55 goals) and against the tough Tunis (53 goals), although the second match didn't mean a thing to them. They went over with stronger teams which mostly kicked them, and yesterday against Chile who has a different game style than Saudi Arabia. Although they've been declassed in all matches and played without a defense in the finale in many of them, the Saudians didn't once go over 56 goals. During preparations they finished at 51 goals with Brasil and Egypt, and against Algeria first it was 46, and yesterday 52. I think today's match will also revolve around those numbers, and that this margin is a couple of goals too high. In last year's head-to-head matches the margin was eight to nine goals lower before the match. I think that today not a lot has changed. At first sight it seems like an unimportant match, but it should be a lot more interesting than it is expected. Details

Panathinaikos are doing much worse away than home this season. They already lost two championship games and recorded their last away Euroleague win over two months ago. I think they they won't have an easy job today because they are meeting a team that brought down Olympiacos home early in the season. I was deciding between the counter-handicap and under at Panathinaikos, but since the margin at handicap is in decline, decided for this option. Besides, Panathinaikos is capable of playing good defense and limit Kifisia to smaller numbers but I don't think they can score over 80 points. The last time visitors went over this margin in a road game away almost three months ago, going over only against Trikala and Kolosos very early in the season (81). They scored 76 against Kifisia home. The home took a huge pressure off their chest last week against Panonios, which was one of their two games in the season in which they conceded over this margin, as a consequence of the first very productive half (more than 100 points scored). They will try and come up with the kind of performance from the Olypmiacos game - stay close till the last quarter and then try and win in the finish. Kifisia managed to limit Olympiacos to 67 points, while Panathinaikos scored 77 after a thriller-finish against Apollon last week. They scored 72 against Koroivos, 54 against PAOK and I expect 70, 75 points max from them today. Details

If the circumstances surrounding this game were normal, these odds could work, but given the circumstances, they are completely off. Russia have failed miserably here, didn't qualify for round of 16 and will definitely be affected by it. We can't claim they're a complete mess but the fact Kulesov already said he's quitting after the WC says is all. Who know how motivated they will be today? The game is not important for them and Russians are not like Germans or the Scandinavians, like their second half against Saudi Arabia proved. They were walking around the court and couldn't wait for the game to end. Kulesov said he'd be reshuffling the team today and, meaning his top player probably won't spend 50 minutes in the game. As for CzR, they are very motivated, Jicha said they want President's Cup title and the last game with Algeria proved other share his wish, even though they knew there was no change of advancing to round of 16. Unlike Russia, who lost the last 4 games, CzR are in high spirits after 2 convincing wins. They destroyed Iceland and I think they're being way underrated here. Details

When talking about the top contenders for medals, the four teams that have been ruling world handball the last few years are always brought up. But, given their performances so far, Sweden are definitely deserved to be regarded as a favorite for top spots. They did the group stage very well, struggled with Egypt and should have beat the French if it wasn't for that bad final period. Kim Andersson is back on the team today, this is the key game, and I think Sweden will be at their best. They have the top defense of the WC, they are diverse in offense and this should be a game very different to the one Poland and Sweden played in Denmark a year ago. Poland has done nothing to impress me, having lost to Germany and Denmark and recorded narrow wins over Argentina and Russia in very close games. I think they don't possess the quality that could see them stand up to mighty Sweden and they struggle with injuries a lot. Lijewski and probably Chrapowski are set to miss this game. Details

Himki played many games like these in the VTB this season, where the winner was known upfront. We saw Kurtiniatis's team relaxed, but they showed great offensive potential, and those matches often ended over this margin (VTB league: Minsk 180 i 175, Riga 183, Bisonsi 167, Samara 197, Astana 181, Enisej 168, Nymburk 176). The exception was against Avtodor, which was the first match of the season, and against Kalev when the Estonians were weakened. Kalev showed they know how to keep up with that rhythm at home though, as obvious against Lokomotiv last weekend, or Moscow by the beginning of the year, when the matches ended over 180. I expect Himki to go to at least 95-100 today, and Kalev to do the rest of the job. Ferimanis not playing will weaken the frontcourt, which means the home team might be even faster and run a lot. Himki went to 160 points against the rough and disciplined HAOK in Greece in the Eurocup match this week, today, when the winner is sure, in circumstances like these, I expect at least 10-15 points more. Statistically, this margin makes sense, but I think a lot of factors point to a tougher match. I said it a few times already, Bourg lead by Sarre had the best defense of the second league last season, and that defense was supposed to be the basis for Bourg's successes. The statistics after the first part of the season shows that Bourg concede 83.9 points per game, have the second worst defense of the league, and that's the main reason for a negative series of 13 defeats. Sarre left, Tissot came, he aimed his attention at the defense, and pointed out that the team have to concede less points. Besides, this is a key match in the fight to stay in the league, a match that will direct many things, and I expect a mini war here. Orleans were better in the first part of the season with 76-74, and I expect even fewer points today. All the alarms went off in Orleans, too, they should be fighting for the playoff, and they've got 9 defeats out of 10, and a new defeat today would question them staying in the elite ranks. I don't expect this match to look pretty because both teams have important goals. Details

Weinhold scored 9 to Poland, 2 to Russia, 8 to Denmark, and 3 to Argentina so far, that's 5.5 per game. Still, today's match is a special one, it's easier, and I think that Weinhold is one of the players who'll get less time on court. Sigurdsson announced rotations, and let the players used the most so far get some rest, which includes Weinhold. Muller got about 20 minutes on that position, Schongarth almost nothing, so I expect the two of them to come up today. The Germans can win this match with half their strength invested, and it's possible that Weinhold won't play at all, and even if he does, I doubt he'll play for more than 15 minutes, so he can hardly score 4 or more in that period. Sigurdsson said that he is going to ask for full dedication from the very start today and that his team will go full throttle. The win is a sure thing, but Germany are in high spirits and Sigurdsson doesn't want to jeopardize that with a bad performance against the Saudis. There will be some reshuffling for sure, but maybe not in the beginning. Regardless of that, I think the difference in quality is so great that Germany can cover this without any problems. Even if substitutes are to play, they will be extremely motiavted to and we saw how that be yesterday in the Croatia-Bosnia game. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia might not be very motivated following their previous performances. They lost all four game convincingly, covering this handicap only against Argentina after the bad first half performance on the Argentinean part that resulted in 4-5 fast breaks for the Saudis. They were 8 goals down to Russia in the end, 11 and 14 against Poland and Denmark. Germany were very efficient even against top European teams and the Saudis will probably not be able to stop them. I already talked about their limitations on the offensive end. That could leave Germany with a lot of chances for fast breaks. I expect Germany to be very motivated and I'm sure that who ever steps out on the court today will do their best to keep the spirits high. They could be more relaxed later on in he game, but the total handicap is a very good option, with the possibility of the Saudi game completely falling apart in the end. Details

Nizhny and Efes already played twice before this season, and the common things in both those matches were absences and defense domination. As far as matches themselves went, there were two very different outcomes, Efes dominating in Russia (Nizhny missing Kinsey, Efes missing Krstić) and Nizhny's payback in Turkey (Nizhny missing Rochestie, Efes missing Krstić and Perperoglu), when Efes already secured the next stage. Today Efes will have both Krstić and Perperoglu, and although the Russian team will have Rochestie and Kinsey, upon whom their offense depends, I believe we'll see another one way match, just like the first one in Novgorod was. Ivković is a mastermind for such matches, he has Draper and Perperoglu who can stop the main guys for Nizhny, and a great reinforcement under the rim and a player Nizhny will have problems with in Krstić. In the first match in Novgorod Efes held a +25 lead at one moment in the third quarter, absolutely dominating the game, and I believe they are the better team right now. Fener also won here a few days ago, quite easily, and I expect the same to happen today. With all the credit that's due to Nizhny for their results so far this season, Efes have the quality, experience and game which should beat the Russian team. Details

A high handicap, but I think it's worth it. Based on everything we've seen in the first three days, the Saudis are the weakest team of the competition. Their handball is getting worse, they're out of the top five teams in Asia, and they came here rejuvenated, with the youngest team here. They simply don't have anything to match their opponents, their offensive is disastrous, and defensively, they rely on being rough, and the referees won't tolerate that. They had 9 sending offs against the Russians, and only thanks to a very bad game by Russia, and a very good Saudi goalie who saved 4-5 sure hits, did they managed not to lose with a huge difference. They were much stronger two years ago, but still lost by 14 to Poland, 18 to Belarus, 10 to Slovenia and Serbia. Now, they're definitely 4-5 goals weaker, and the Danes will be extra motivated to make up for the bad game against Argentina. They should have and could have won by 6-7 goals difference then, but didn't do it. Today, their firm defense will be a big problem for the Saudi offensive, and their good wings will score lots of goals from the counter attacks. The Saudis are very bad in the defensive transition, and the question is how much will they even try when the difference grows. They will hardly score 20 goals, and the Danes can easily score 35 with the counter attacks. Denmark are a team ideal for crushing the weaker teams, especially today when they're motivated, and I expect the difference to be at least 15-20 goals. Details

This margin is too high when Germany is involved. Sigurdsson brought lots of discipline to their game and the only time in nine games since he is leading that Germany went above this margin was the first one, against the Swiss, at 58 goals. Against quick Iceland in the preparation period they played at 55 and 49, and have still not conceded more than 26 goals, if we count in the preparation matches and their first game here against Poland. Germany had a 69% scoring rate in that game, Poland were at 62%, their goalies at under 20% saves, and the game still stayed under this margin. They'll hardly repeat such scoring, especially since they're rather limited on offense. The Russians slowed things down against the Saudis, with a 10-8 second half, and I don't expect them to run much today either. Kulešov largely calmed them down, and this is also an extremely important match. They mostly stayed under against tough 6-0 defenses in the European Championship (Serbia 52, Poland 46, Sweden 56), and I expect this to be another game at 50-55 goals. Details
