    I have to admit these odds surprised me. Aris shouldn't be a favorite against any team in the league, and Rethymno are definitely not ranked with the teams from the bottom, like Trikala. Actually, I think they're at least as good as Aris, who can have a minor advantage because of the home court. However, I definitely don't expect anyone to be crushed here, but that there'll be fight till the end. Aris know they have to slow down and not let Rethymno impose their style. A game with a lower number of points works for the counter handicap. Solun team can hardly crush their opponents, they covered this margin only twice this season. Rethymno have two consecutive defeats right now, but that's why I think they'll be extra motivated. The last week's defeat against Trikala might have influenced these odds, who were crushed by Aris two weeks prior, but that was definitely Rethymno's worst game of this season. They definitely have what it takes here, I think they showed the most this season, next to the three best teams, and I think they have a chance to win. Nobody crushed them, they were defeated at home by Oly 10, in Athens -9, and in Solun only after the overtime. They easily defeated Kifisia at their own court. I really doubt Aris can crush them, and their only advantage is the support from the stands, but that's not enough for 1.25. I think the real odds for the home team's win are 1.65-1.70, clearly revealed by the odds for this bet. Details

    When it comes to home games this season, PAOK lost only to mighty Lokomotiv and Karsiyaka. They beat Stelmet by 19 points, Buducnost by 20, and Ventsplis by 14 in Eurocup. They defeated Panathinaikos in the Greek championship here. The opponents broke their points-low record of the season with 54 points and lost by 17 in the end. This is the key game for PAOK, a defeat would leave them with no little chance since they're set to meet Khimki in the next two. On the other hand, a win over the Russian team took the pressure of Cantu's chest and don't have to stress about the result here. The win over Khimki was to some extent the result of Cantu's good performance but to a much larger extent a result of horrible approach the opponents had in the opening minutes of the game. They allowed Cantu to score a lot of points and that see then lose eventually, even though they won the second half by 8 points. The Italians are 3-9 away both in the championship and Eurocup. The away game in Solun is similar to the one in Dijon since Dijon and PAOK are teams of similar quality. Cantu lost by 9 points in France, by 20 in the Canaries, and by 8 against ASVEL. All five away defeats were by at least 8 points, to teams not at PAOK's level. I expect for the Greek team to take advantage of the home arena and the fan support and to recird a relatively convincing win that will leave them with a chance in this group. The fan support might be crucial in case the game comes to a close end, but I think PAOK will confirm they're better much earlier in the meeting. Details

    Bookmakers can often be wrong when coming up with total points margins for games between the best Lithuanian clubs. Both teams' averages suggest this margin is set right, but both are often superior in their respective games, which can hype the averages. Rules are a bit different when it comes to their head-to-head games. The first one this season ended at 166 points, with 57 in the last quarter. The first 30 minutes were the kind of basketball that is expected today. Zalgiris are very tough today, especially home, limiting their opponents to smaller number of points. The games with Real, Alba, Efes, and UNICS ended well under 150 points, the one with Novgorod at 160 with a blowout in the first half, and the one with Sassari at 159. Lietuvos prefer faster-paced basketball, but their road games are a bit tougher in style. Out of the more important games this season, they went over with fast-paced Ploiesti and Partizan in Belgrade, but their game in Jerzalem finished at 151, in Klapeida against Neputnas at 138, and the ones against Oktjabr and Bavitspot at 140 and 137 points. Zalgiris are similar to the last two teams more than to the others - they play very tough defense and that is exactly what I expect today. These two teams are great rivals which makes this game very important, especially in terms of starting positions ahead of the playoff. Zaligirs are 18-1, Lietuvos 16-3 and a new defeat would probably be the end of their hope for the top position ahead of the playoffs. Details

    Aris are a good, tough team, but I think they're being overestimated here. I would set the margin like this only in Olympiacos' home games with Panathinaikos or PAOK. Aris are not that level, regardless of the good results this season. Olympiacos' game doesn't suit them at all, as their previous head-to-head meetings prove. Aris lost the last 7 games they played against Olympiacos away by 27, 32, 23, 19, 35, 32, and 33 points. They are not capable of dealing with the kind of pressure Olympiacos put on their game and the toughness, which forces them into turnovers. They might be able to cope for a while, but at one point, Aris' game will fall apart. Olympiacos is in great shape and recording nothing but wins, even in Euroleague. They opened Top 16 with two wins and don't have a game till Friday, which will given them plenty of time to recover from this one. They crushed Milano a few days ago and Aris have no chance of covering this handicap. Katsivelis emphasizes the importance of this game now that they're finally top table and the fact Aris are considered to be one of the toughest opponents in Greece is only good because it won't let them relax. Aris are actually no better than some middle-table teams or even some from the lower part of the table. It seems Olympiacos are headed for a convincing win. Details

    This will be the clash of two different concepts. Nanntere were building their game around offense lately, while Nancy had to rely on defense more since Adams left. However, I expect that Nancy set up their pace home and that the game will be tough. Nanterre won the last 6 head-to-head games (played total of 4 this and last season). Nancy scored 68 (overtime included), 69, 50, and 70 in those four. They played nine championship games and never once went over this margin. It happened a few times in Eurocup only, but they weren't convincing then either. The home team were limited to only 46 points in Valencia on Wednesday, with all their problems following Adam's departure emerging. I thus expect them to focus on defense more today, which should make the game even less productive. They went over this margin in only two championship games (in the convincing win over Bourg and the weird game against Cholet). They managed to impose a physically tough game and that is what I expect to happen today as well. A more efficient game at 80 or more points would make Nanterr's changes greater and Weisz knows that. I expect them to end at around 70 points and if anyone finishes with more, it should be Nanterre, who are in better shape right now and have proved to be capable of played good defense in many meetings this season. They won 79-70 here in the championship when Adams was still at Nancy. Details

    Watching the statistics, Koroivos didn't go over this margin in the last six home games, Kifisia did in only two of the six away games, but one of those was against the offensively oriented Trikala. However, statistics isn't the only thing I rely on for this pick. Both Koroivos and Kifisia have negative series right now, and that really annulled anything good they did in the first weeks of the season. Koroivos lost five, and Kifisia four in a row, and both have an imperative to win today. Only for that, we should see a game even tougher than it would be in normal circumstances. Koroivos conceded over 80 only in Solun this season, scored 80 only against AEK in the first round, and then didn't go over 73. Kifisia's game style in away games is famous, they always want to slow the game down and rely on the firm defense, and not allow the opponent to play much. I see this game at 140 or under, so this margin's got quite a value, in my opinion. Details

    Norway's win against Hungary yesterday might fool you, but Norway are a primarily defense oriented team in their successes. This generation played seven EC games, and only the one against fast Belarussia went over 51 goals (55), but that was a match for the placement. Zanotti came to the bench, a master of 6-0 defense, who left a mark in Lugi, and we all know what style that team played with in the last seasons. Iceland are even more defensively oriented, physically very strong and use those predispositions to get the desired results. In the qualifiers a year ago, in those three games, they scored 127 goals total (42.3 per game), but they crushed Georgia, and that really improved their average. They left Lithuania with five goals in the first halftime yesterday, and won the game at 42 goals. Today, someone's definitely getting a ticket for Brazil, this match means a lot, and I expect a big battle on the court that should result in a game at 50 goals or under in total. Details

    Hats off to Ploiesti for everything they've done so far, but this Lokomotiv are a few levels above when it comes to quality. Kuban-based team are putting all their focus into Eurocup from season's start, which resulted in 10 wins. Each win in Eurocup is important for the next stage and Lokomotiv want to win every game to be given a more favorable draw later on. This is the first game and a defeat in Romania would make things very complicated, seeing as Lokomotiv share this group with Nancy and Valencia. With Lokomoiv trying their best, I don't see a way in which Ploiesti could lose by less than 10 points. The Romanian team has had a few good home games, but when they met tough and good-quality teams like Oktjabr and Hapoel, they recorded defeats by 17 and 20 points. Lokomotiv are the best defense in Eurocup and Poliesti will have a very tough time dealing with that. Their defense, on the other end, won't be able to stop Lokomotiv's offense. Lokomotiv won each of their first stage away games by at least 8 points. I think the game in Turkey and the one in Greece and even Podgorica were all tougher than this one. Lokomotiv should be able to win this by 10-15 points. Details

    Germany might have won easily yesterday, but odds set at close to 3 at Iceland's win home against this Germany simply makes no sense. Germany are playing the role of the favorite as if they were France, Croatia, or Denmark, which is clearly not the case. Iceland reshuffled the team quite a lot yesterday, trying to test all difference formations, which in turn, affected the score. That will only serve them as extra motivation in the second game. They will try their best today since they don't want to lose home again. I even think they the favorites to some extent. Germany could be reshuffling today, but even it they don't, this won't be a cruise toward the win like yesterday. I don't think they will win convincingly, this margin covers a defeat by small number of goals and I think ti has great value. Details

    Kurtinaitis would like to start the year the right way, and I believe we'll see the true face of Himki today once again, as we did over the past weeks while they won their last 11 games in all competitions. However, they've improved noticeably in that period, especially on defense. They had little trouble winning a tough away match in Siberia, although they struggled with centers and as many as 18 turnovers while Enisej caught 23 offensive rebounds. At home they covered this margin in most of their games, with three exceptions (Riga, Zenit, Bešiktaš). The Czechs are aware of the difficulty of their task, and considering the hard schedule they're facing, it's possible they'll calculate a bit once things start going downhill. Himki are very hard to stop at home, and Nymburk have fared very poorly away this season (2-9 in the Eurocup and VTB league). They also lost by 19 at home against UNICS, by 15 against Lokomotiv, -13 against CSKA, so I seriously doubt they'll stay under this margin in one of the toughest away matches there is. Zenit lost by 22 here a few weeks ago, UNICS by 24, and both of those are stronger teams than Nymburk.

    A margin that is set too high, influenced by Bourg's averages. Pau are averaging 149.3 points in regulation time, recording 13 unders in 15 games (24 out of 27 in total, preseason included). Things in offense improved since Dillard joined, but Pau still build their game around defense as their previous games prove. They limit Limoges to some 60 points, meaning the defense is still going strong. As for Bourg, the offense is not good either and got even worse since O'Bassetta got injured. Defense should be their driving force but it's not, which caused an 11-game losing streak, being better than Boulougne only in defense. But, Bourg don't play fast-paced games and I have the capacity to play well. They limited Strasbourg to 76, Limoges to 79, Boulogne to 80. Their game with Nanterre ended at 180 points on account of brilliant efficiency and with Nanterre being the best offense in the league. I don't expect the teams to have field goal efficiency of 55-60%, especially because this is the 4th game in the last 10 days. Bourg are 8-7 in unders-overs at this margin in the championship. I expect them to stay under 150 points or less today, like in the games with ASVEL, Strasourg, Limoges and Orealns. It's a very important games since Bourg need to get out of this crisis, while Pau need a win to get closer to Leader's Cup. Details

    If this wasn't a preparation game when things aren't at the best level yet, I would have gone with much higher stake. I expect Slovakia to lose badly today, Poland are tough, have all their best players and play home. It's Sunday, the stands will be packed and motivation running high. Besides, everyone will try and do as best as possible to deserve a spot in the line up for the next games, which should guarantee fast pace from the start. Slovaks went to Poland with substitutes and only two players from Tatran. The coach says result is not the most important thing here and Slovakian handball is in decline. They lost in Bucharest by 8, to Serbia by 8 and 13 goals, to Sweden by 10 home. I don't think they will manage to lose by less than ten goals. The difference in quality is simply too high and given the motivation on the Polish team, they should win this easily. Details

    When it comes to this Rethymno, this margin is too low. Skortopoulos's team is the most pleasant surprise of the championship, with 7-3 ratio, they're right behind three best teams. They only lost to those three, and were an even opponent in all three duels. Besides, it's common knowledge that Rethymno are the fastest team of the league, with the fastest transition after the good defense and defensive rebounds that they base their fast game on. They went over this margin in six out of the last ten games, and stayed under it only in the three defeats (went over in the overtime against PAOK), and in the last game against Kolossos, with Oly limiting them only to 69 points. In that last game against Kolossos, they had a disastrous 14/29 free throws, and the humble 6/25 three pointers. With average percentages, they'd probably get close or even over 80 points. AEK showed they aren't shy playing faster, and since Šakota came, they only played the first out of the five games under 155 points. They kept their opponents under this margin only in two out of ten games, in that first game when Šakota came against Apollon, and at the very beginning of the championship, against Panionios who were still chaotic then. AEK limited Kolossos to 73, Kifisia to 75, and in the other six games, they conceded at least 80. It's interesting, both AEK and Rethymno played one game already, the one in the Cup where AEK were better with 81-78. The home team point out defense as the key segment, but I think we should see a faster game, with more possession, which should lead to more points. Rethymno have their chances here, and their over seems to be the best option. Details

    Following the games last night, Nancy, Paris, and ASVEL are in spot 8 on a 7-7 record. Three teams with great ambition ahead of this season have not done much to live up to the ambition. The game in Paris is very important since who ever loses is set to get short of the teams currently in the positions leading to the Leader's Cup. Besides, Paris and Nancy average 149 points per game, which makes this bet statistically grounded. Paris are on a five-game winning run, not having conceded over 73 points in regulation time in any of those games. Nancy have one over at this margin away, against Strasbourg when the game ended at 154 points in the thriller finish. Besides, circumstances surrounding this game are good for this bet as well. Nancy lost their tops scorer and point guard Adams, who was averaging 18 points per game and was contributing to the game organization greatly. Clark will step in as of New Years, leaving Nancy weakened in the last two games this year. I expect them to rely on the tough defense completely. Importance of this game, stats, Nancy not having their best player...it's all pointing towards a very tough game and I think the margin is set too high. Details

    The margin seems to be set low at first, but given the rivalry and the game style of the two teams, it is a few points too high. Olympiacos' games end at 141.3 points, Panathinaikos' at 146.6 in the championship, with most of them games being settled quite early, which results in a more relax approach in the finish. Olympiacos are very defense-oriented since Sferopoulos joined and base everything around that segment of the game. They are putting a lot of pressure on the opponents home limiting all of them to less than 70 points in the more important games. On the other hand, Panathinaikos opened the season with some very productive games and unrealistically high efficiency, which could make us think they turned into an offense-oriented team. But, as the time went by Panathianikos proved that defense is what they build their game around. They were limited to under 70 points in all the important games against tougher teams (Istanbul, Barcelona, Milano) and I expect the same today. Their defense on the other end of the floor has the capacity to limit this Olympiacos to similar numbers. Their head-to-head games in the previous seasons saw both opponents struggle to reach 70 points, which I what I expect today as well. 153 points were scored in their Cup game early in the season, but Olymiacos were without Sferopoulos, and 65 points were scored in the first half of that game and staggering 90 in the second. This game could be the key in the battle for the top position ahead of the playoff and I expect great fight for each point and this game to end under 140. Details

    The margin that is influenced by some of Boulogne's games from the first part of the season. However, I don't think we will watch a fast-pace game today. A win over Bourg kept Castanova's team alive and gave them hope that they will avoid relegation. Boulogne were more disciplined in the Bourg game (60 shots on both sides) despite of 92 points in the first half. I think that is the consequence of amazing shooting efficiency and 10 three pointers in the first quarter (24 in the end). As the game advanced, the efficiency dropped and Boulogne played great defense in the last two minutes. Castano used only 7 players, all starters spent at least 28 minutes in the game, Boynton, Carter, and Brown almost 40. That means the pace won't be fast today and Bolougne don't have Tucker, who is important offense-wise, today. They ended the last three games at 155 points or less, despite two of them being settled in the first half. Borg know how good Boulogne are offense-wise and their starters used up a lot of energy in the local derby, with bench scoring only 5 points. Dijon played all the home games under this margin, most under 145 points, expect for those in the beginning. When complete, they are very tough and physically powerful. The odds suggest a one-sided win, but I'm not sure we will see a win by more than 20 points. Even if we do, that often resulted in unders at Dijon's games because they slow the pace down to keep their lead up. Details

    Glandorf's injury is something Flensburg won't be able to make up for today and should change the concept of today's game completely. Melsungen and Flesburg are two great defense teams capable of limiting the opponent to a small number of goals. Flensburg's attacking will struggle without one of its key players against zone defense, which means they will have to play very tough defense, just like against Kiel a few days ago. This margin makes sense statistically (Melsungen 57.5, Flensburg 55.4) but the averages are hyped by one sided wins over weaker opponents. Both teams, Flensburg especially, are usually limited to smaller number of points against powerful opponents. Melsungen will have a great deal of fan support, the motivation will be running high and I expect their very aggressive approach in defense. It seems it will be a very tough game, similar to the one they played early in the season (29-22). The Cup game ended at 60 goals but it was an easy win for Flensburg, which is not expected today.     I see this margin as too high relative to the importance of the game. Boulogne is at 1-12, Bourg at 2-11, both nailed to the bottom, and a defeat here would be a major blow, both mentally and in terms of points. Boulogne have no room for error, as a defeat here coupled with the schedule in the coming weeks would leave them without a chance to avoid relegation. They play at a fast pace, but ended their last three at 149, 127 and 155. Their only win was against Chalon with 127 total points, and they came close to another against Le Mans (129) and Rouen (127). This is crucial for them, and I don't expect them to rush. Castano was also bitter about them allowing 30 in the first quarter in Pariz, saying the players need more heart and courage, not to mention the importance of the match might slow down the pace a bit. Bourg are coming with nine consecutive losses, although they were much more competitive in them than Boulogne. Of their eight away games (including the Cup), only the last against Cholet went over this margin, as they fell apart after conceding 37 points in the second quarter. Theirs was the best defense of the second league last season, they limited Limoges, Strasbourg and offensive Chalon to 80 or under. They faced Boulogne four times in the second league in the past two seasons, one was a blowout with 158, others ended at 151 or under. Last season they played 68-63 here, and Bourg are running the same roster and team barely changed, while Boulogne have the same coach, and were the second best team of the second league offensively last year, and it was still a low scoring game. Injuries are an added bonus to the bet, as Boulogne are missing Tucker, Bourg miss O`Bassett, both very important offensively. Details

    When taking only stats into consideration (only regulation time), Pau Orthez are at 146.8 points (8 unders and 4 overs at this margin), Cholet at 159.3 points (4 unders, 8 over). Pau Orthez are a 150.2 home (4U-2U),a nd Cholet at 151.0 points (3U-2O). I expected the margin to be set around 150 or 151, which is why I think the one set here has value and not only because of stats. Ever since the start of the season, Pau Orthez are very limited offense-wise and rely on defense heavily. The home team are on a 4-8 record and in a similar situation Pau played a brilliant defense-oriented game against offense-oriented Boulogne two weeks ago, limiting them to 60 points (149 in total). They were 30 points up early in the second half. The coach will insist on tough defense today as well and limiting the opponent to small number of points. My bet at Cholet and Bourg's under last week wasn't successful because Buffard's team has a fantastic second quarter. Cholet are not as good away against tougher opponents like Strasbourg, Le Mans, or ASVEL, who mostly limited them to smaller number of points. They played two games in two days here last season.     I expect a match in which the score will be decided with a lower number of points, and if anyone should go to higher numbers, it will be UNICS. Nizhny will again be without Rochestie who scored 20 points on average and without whom Nizhny's offense problems are visible. Last week Nizhny beat them in Istanbul, although they were below this margin, as in the home match against the very modest Minsk, while they went over only in crushing Riga on Monday. However, today they will be playing against one of the best European defenses at the moment, and the importance of the match couldn't be higher. For both of them this is practically an elimination match and I expect a huge fight for every point. UNICS played eight matches since the arrival of Pasutin, and in neither did they receive over 75 points (against Madrid and Moscow, one of the toughest matches). They only received above 70 against Enisej on Sunday, in a match which was done by half-time. All of the other opponents are below this margin, and they had opponents who have played a lot faster than Nizhny and had greater offense potential. Pasutin announced that everything will be stemming from the defense, that he has to stop key opponent players. Without Rochestie Nizhny turned to the defense, and the hosts are aware that their chances lie in the lower number of points. I see two scenarios: either UNICS's confirmation that they're the better team at the moment, or a big fight which will be decided in the end. In both cases I expect Nizhny to be below 70 points.
