Surprises are always possible in France, but I see this as a one way street. Nancy swept away Gravelines a few days ago, demolishing them in an away match, and now they're playing their first home match. They do even better in front of their own crowd, and lost only five home matches last year, mostly close ones against elite opponents, while they easily beat opponents such as this one. Bourg simply have nothing to parry with, they're a disaster on offense ever since the preparations started. They scored just 56 against Chalon, and Nancy are certainly capable of limiting them to below 60. The rookie team in the league have kept almost the same roster they had last season, are in serious injury problems and currently seem to be the worst team in the league. Le Havre came to visit and had a +20 lead by halftime, while Chalon easily beat them by +24. Nancy are way above both of those teams right now and I expect a similar, if not even better score. There will be no relaxation, as Nancy have a 0-1 score in the championship, regardless of the victory on Wednesday. They started of with a loss against Limoges, and Weisz is well aware that another fumble would bring him problems at the very start. I expect them to play hardball defense from the start, in which case Bourg don't stand a chance. Chalon's inner lineup demolished them, so will Nancy's , and the only chance for Bourg here is to limit Nancy to under 70 points. However, as Weisz has a stronger offense than last year, I doubt that will happen... Details

Looking at quality defenses, both Dijon and Le Mans have some of the best in the league. When after a game won 66-63 the Dijon coach calls his team's defense good but not optimal and does not speak a word about offense, you get the idea what the focus is. Dijon played a 129 point match against Reims, who had the best offense in the second league last season and are focused primarily on offense. Today they'll face an opponent with a mirroring philosophy, Le Mans are shaken and are coming here to recover. Kunter is struggling to assemble the offense as almost the entire backbone of the team left in the summer, and it will be some time before he puts it back together again. The defense seems to be doing much better, and there is no doubt they will try to win through tough defending. The possible absence of Joseph works for this bet, and even if he were to play, it will be far from his best. Borg complains about absences and a tough schedule, one can expect him to slow down the pace and this could easily be a standard duel of these two teams, ending at 120-130 points. Details

The fact Korea reached final undefeated deserves respect, but Qatar are something completely different and I don't see a way for Korea to mess with their plans today. Qatar concede just over 18 goals per game. Korea's offense isn't brilliant and Qatar are definitely capable of limiting them to around 20 goals. Qatar normally do 10-15 at a very high level to take the lead and settle the game. Korea did beat Iran and Bahrain by 4 goals, but Qatar destroyed both of those teams. They were 12 goals up against Bahrain mid-second half, and 9 goals up against Iran. If it was necessary, they could have won both of them by 10 or more goals. They are simply one level above all the other teams, their players are extremely motivated to finally win the gold medal. Korea can maybe keep the goal difference to around five, but they will have a hard time covering this handicap. The margin is really low, even if there wasn't such a huge difference in quality, and Qatar are capable of reaching it in the final five minutes. Korea won't be able to keep the pace up throughout the game. I think the margin is set at least one goal too low. I expect Qatar to win this by at least 4, 5 goals or even more. Details

This should be the battle of defenses which will make scoring more than 150 points very difficult. Le Portel have improved their defense game a lot in the final part of the preparation period, the coach often talked about that segment of their game. Le Portel didn't concede more than 62 points in those games, with all of them finishing under this margin (Orchies 74:57, Lille 76:59, Alford 90:54, Evreux 69:62, Angers 85:54). The players they have at his disposal at the moment suggest such an outcome today. They're pysically powerful, with a lot of tall players who can't afford to engage in outrunning. They will try and limit Le Mans to 70 or less points. That is the kind of game they stand a chance in. On the other hand, Le Mans' offense isn't doing brilliantly early in the season. That was to be expected since they lost five of the players who were scoring 53 points on average last season in the championship. Good replacements joined, but Kunter will need time to get them organized the way he wants it. The defense is much better at the moment, and the players said that Kunter wants extreme focus in defense at all times. Le Mans were defeated to Rouen in their first official game, which is why I expect them to be more aggressive today, just like they were in the second half of that game when the opponent scored only 20 points. They are more than capable of limiting the opponent to about 60 points with the right approach. In that case, this pick should not have been a problem. Being knocked out this early in the Cup, following the defeat to Rouen home would be a big blow to Kunter. Since the opponent are a tough team, I expect maximum focus from the start. Details

The offense potential with both teams aside, I think this margin is set too high. They did two head-to-head meetings during the summer, it was 80-75 here (with Gravelines weakened), and 92-77 at Sportica. 53 points were scored in the final quarter of the second game. I expect things to get even more intense today. It is the first game for Boulogne in this league. It is also a derby match. Boulogne's offense was second best last season, but an average of around 155 points were scored in their games. Boynton and Mays will be the leaders of their offense, but the rest of the team are not as good. I do, however, expect the defense to get better now that Anagonye is back. On the other hand, Gravelines did 10 pre-season games, and went above this margin in only two in regulation time. The other one, besides the aforementioned game with Boulogne, was very early in the preparation period, when they beat Orleans 104-72. They won the Cup game against Saint Quentin 72-71. I expect a great fight today, a game similar to the one they played in pre-season here. The first round is often nervous, and tough, which the games played over the weekend confirmed. Only one of them went over 155 points. This is also a great rivalry and I think the margin is set too high, by at least 4 -5 points. Details

Le Havre have not been doing well in pre-season defense-wise, but they were getting better by the game. Evreux limited them to 73 points in regulation time, Gravelines to 79, Nanterre to 67. Bourg are struggling with efficiency, they never once went over this margin in pre-season or the Cup. Another blow to the team is their first choice point guard Darnauzan. Morlende was brought in as a substitute, but he still can't play today. Bourg's defense got them promoted, they had the best defense in second division and defense is definitely what they will rely on at this level. Not a lot has changed, and they're basically the only team that struggled to get over this margin even in the lower league. It's the season opener, the battle between teams that will fight to avoid relegation. I expect a tough game. I don't think the home team can get close to 80 points, given all the problems and the lack of efficiency in offense. Details

Yesterday's matches went over 175 points, and that is the sole reason for this margin. However, both Stelmet and Nymburk are teams that lean more towards offense, play at a fast pace and are responsible for such efficient matches. Both matches also had more than 50 points scored in the last quarter, which I doubt will be the case today. Hapoel won the Israeli Super Cup, and stayed below this margin in all three matches they played. Yesterday their coach wasn't pleased with the way they played defense, nor did UNICS strategist Pedoulakis, and how could he when UNICS allowed 54 points in the second half and turned a won game into a complicated one. Today I expect both sides to play much more cautiously. The stakes are huge, as the winner gets a step away from the Euroleague and I don't expect a mad rush on the court. There is no shortage of offensive potential, but this is still the start of the season and the teams are not fully optimized. Pedoulakis embodies the Greek basketball philosophy, and we all know it's base. I see this match more along 150 points or even less, this margin is definitely set too high. Details

Iran lost to Oman yesterday, but don't deserve to be underestimated this much. They have a bronze medal from the last Asian Championship, and were defeated only once during that entire tournament, in the final against Qatar (22-23). Yesterday they also suffered a minimal defeat, but I believe that was not a real reflection of their quality. Even more, I'm convinced that Maček will know how to motivate his players for today. Nothing is lost yet, and a victory against Korea would bring Iran back into the race. These two teams played a completely even match in January, and this time Korea only has the advantage of home court. However, I doubt that will help them beat Iran, who played an even match against Bahrein in January on their home court, while this Korean team is not any stronger. Saudi Arabia gave them quite a few problems and were at just -2 with 3 minutes to go, while Iran is a much, much stronger team. It's been a while since they were soundly beaten by an Asian team, and I'm pretty sure this will be a lose match to say the least. Iran beat both Besiktas and Borac in the preparation period, they spoke of going for the medal here, and they will certainly fight to the end. If Korea even manage to win somehow, one can hardly expect a decisive victory. Details

The margin for Taiwain is set at 7.5 for the third consecutive match. Being the underdog, they first managed to beat Japan and get through to the next round, but the game with Korea followed, showing us what their quality really is like. They scored only 14 goals and lost by 13 in that game. Today, their opponent would be at least at the same level quality-wise. It's the Asian runnner up Bahrain. They beat Saudi Arabia by 6 goals and Arabia is much better than Taiwan. But the margin is set at 7.5 regardless. I really can't understand that, especially taking into consideration both teams' last round games. The fact Taiwan managed to beat Japan is more a reflection of their bad quality than of Taiwain's good quality. Taiwan have no participated in any of the significant championships for years. Besides, this is round two and both teams have to start from scratch, which will make Bahrain very motivated. They should win this match by ten or more points, and the only reason I won't try with a unit higher stakes is the fact they're playing Qatar tomorrow. However, they need one good-quality half to get over this margin. I don't think Taiwan have the quality or the strength to keep the pace up for the entire game. Details

Taiwan are the most pleasant surprise after the first two days but I think their wins are largely caused by the lack of quality of their opponents. There's no point discussing India's quality, while Japan are obviously not ready to make another step into the Asian championships. However, Taiwan will now face Korea who are the hosts and want the gold medal to get back to the top of Asian handball. They had an easy task against Japan in the first round, even easier against India in the second and they have saved their energy for the important games to come. This is definitely one of them as this is a battle for the top spot in the group and an easier draw in the quarter-finals. A difference between these two teams is pretty big and Korea are laying at home and are very motivated after their failure in Bahrein. Had Taiwan not beaten Japan yesterday, I'm sure we would't have this margin, but I believe in a convincing win for Korea. Details

India lost to Taipei by 19 goals, and it could have been at least 25 if they didn't relax in the end. Today, they'll have a much tougher opponent, and India's problem will be the fact that this will be their second match in 24 hours. Korea have been a nightmare for teams like these for years, they cause numerous technical faults with their defense, and they stuff opponents' nets with counter attacks, which will be obvious here. Korea played a really good match against Japan, and considering their blunders in January and the fact that they're playing at home, they won't lack motivation. I expect a convincing win and the difference to grow till the very end. Details

Barcelona and Al-Sadd played a match in the first round and Barcelona won by 9 goals. Even though my margin was 10.5 goals, I think it was a great bet as Barcelona were up by 11 goals near the end but got too lax. The margin is now 2 goals lower but I would personally take the same margin, if not even a higher one. Realistic difference between these two teams, if Barcelona go in with full force, is some 15-20 goals. The only downside that has prevented me from putting 1-2 units more is the fact that Al-Sadd are the hosts and Barcelona might not want to demolish the hosts in front of their fans. But if they were able to beat them by 9 goals in the first round, they should do so again as Barcelona have tuned up and Al-Sadd have worn themselves out. Details

All things considered, I'll have to back El-Jaish with a small stake. Flensburg are riddled with injuries, with something like 10 players available for the second match in 24 hours and their fifth in six days. Fatigue will certainly be an issue, and yesterday's defeat against Al-Sadd will certainly influence their concentration as well. The Germans beat El-Jaish 29-24 a few days ago, but the end result does not come close to depicting how hard Vranješ's team had to work. The final +5 was also their biggest lead, with El-Jaish at just -1 with five minutes to go. The team from Qatar lost to Barcelona yesterday, but it was clear they missed their chance against Flensburg. Now they're getting a chance for payback, and I think they'll be more motivated to fight for the third place. Our compliments to Al Sadd, but the fact remains they're only here because they're the hosts, and they took advantage of their chances in the final. El-Jaish are quite a bit better than them, and if Al-Sadd managed to beat Flensburg in such an important match, so can El-Jaish. Compared to the first match, they just need to take advantage of their chances, and I believe they will have plenty. The handicap margin is in decline, and I believe it's not worth it to play any lower counterhandicap on El-Jaish. It's possible they'll disintegrate in the final moments as they did in the first match, but the odds for victory have significant value. In these conditions the Qatar team certainly have more than a 15% chance to win. Details

Taubate were quite pale against Sydney and their coach emphasized fatigue after the game. Brazil struggled against the opposition's organized defense and only 23 goals against Sydney is just not enough. They're facing a much stronger, better team that definitely confirmed their motivation to take the fifth spot. Esperance literally crushed Al Ahli in the second half and they knew how to punish their fatigue. They played in full rhythm until the last minute and had there been more time they would have won by 20 goals. This constant pressure shows their desire. Esperance were unlucky in group stage as they had Al-Sadd on the ropes but didn't know how to get the job done. Al-Sadd's win against Flensburg yesterday only shows how strong the Tunisians really are. Taubate and Esperance beat the same opponents and that's why we have odds like this but the Tunisians left a much better impression. Apart from their win yesterday, they only needed 1 half to beat Sydney while Taubate struggled until the end. The final +8 was the biggest goal difference in that game. They beat Al Ahli in the final 10 minutes and got heavy defeats against Flensburg and especially El-Jaish. Coupled with fatigue, the fact stands that Taubate will struggle against Esperance's defense and I think this bet has a huge value. Details

With a few good signings joining over the summer, El-Jaish's ambitions prior to this tournament were running high. But their head-to-head meeting with Flensburg only went to confirm that they're still not capable of dealing with top teams. Flensburg managed to win with only 9 players at their disposal. Barcelona, with two very powerful line-ups that can keep the pace up for the whole match, are very different from Flensburg. Last year's semi final game was a good warning for Barcelona not to underestimate El-Jaish, which is why I believe in a very serious approach on their part. They've been getting better as the tournament advanced. Another good news for Barcelona is the the fact the game's been scheduled for this evening. Following the Sydney game, coach Pascual said his team aren't used to playing so early and that that caused them trouble. The adjustment period is over, and I expect Barcelona at top level in the two final games. And that level is clearly out of El-Jaish's reach. The Asian champions lost the pre-season game with Paris by 12 goals, and the one with Cehovski Medvedi by 9. Barcelona are currently better than both of those teams. They need to perform brilliantly for only 10-15 minutes to get ahead and stay there. Will that happen early in the game or at the very end we can't be sure, but I expect this handicap to get covered. The game against El-Jaish has shown all of Al Ahli's weaknesses. Poor fitness and lack of height were a problem against the strongest Asian team in the second half, which El-Jaish could have won by 10 goals had they kept the pressure up. Flensburg are one step above El-Jaish and their defense is even better and can limit Al Ahli to under 20 goals. Vranješ definitely wasn't happy with their performance yesterday and Flensburg still beat a tricky opponent by 6 goals despite their mediocre performance. I expect them to do better today and get a double-digit win. Al Ahli are without their main coach here, they will be even more tired and Flensburg's defense could result in numerous technical errors and easy counters. Details

This margin is a result of yesterday's game between Al-Sadd and Barcelona but we are facing a completely different game which won't be settled before the very end. Al-Sadd managed to limit pretty efficient Barcelona to 38 goals in 43 minutes, but the game later lost its edge and it ended at 59 goals. I expect a hard fight here for several reasons. This is a crucial game for both teams here and the style of Tunisian teams is well known. In addition, coach Ben Thayer can definitely worry about their efficiency against weak Sydney. Esperance scored only 29 goals, 10 from counters, and they struggled a lot against organized defense. However, the defense was at a very high level, they limited Sydney to only 5 goals in the first 30 minutes and they probably would have allowed 12-13 goals until the end if not for so many rotations. That won't be the case today, this will be a game of patient build-up and it's hard to expect so many counters (Barcelona scored 14 goals from counters against Al-Sadd). I don't see both teams getting over 25 goals and this could be a real trench war, so this bet has a very high value. Details

At first sight, this margin is huge for men's handball but the difference between the two teams is even bigger than the margin suggests. Last season, Barcelona often scored 45 goals against professional teams in their league, beating them by 20-25 goals, even away. Sydney are far from being a professional team and as much as this game is a dream come true, I doubt they can lose this by under 25-30 goals. Australia's national team has lost all their games at the World Cup 2 years ago by at least 23 goals, even against African teams, and they have more quality than Sydne. In comparison, Spain beat them by 51-11 and this is an example of what should happen today. Spain, and Barcelona in particular, grind weaker opponents with ease. They beat a much stronger team by 9 goals even though their crucial players played for only 15 minutes or so. Their squad depth is incredible and they won't have to worry about Australia's set up defense. Barca scored 14 goals from counters against Al-Sadd and I expect 20 today. Sydney lost by only -9 against Esperance only because the Tunisians relaxed and were pretty inefficient. Barcelona should get at least 45 goals and I don't see Sydney scoring over 20 here. Kiel defeated them by 27 goals two years ago, El-Jaish by 23 goals last year and Hamburg by 20 goals, bearing in mind they were up by 16 at half-time. Barcelona are even stronger and have a tendency for crushing their opponents. The goal difference will just increase and this should end in at least +30. Details

I think the fact that Al-Sadd are the hosts is overrated. The difference in quality is huge and the home court advantage will play no role. Barcelona have a great squad that's ready to take everything this season and Super Globe is one of two crucial competitions in this mission. Al-Sadd are definitely no strong enough to pose a threat as they would certainly not be in the top tier of Spanish handball and Barcelona even beat those teams by 10-15 goals. A danger when going for high handicaps lies in potential relaxation in the end-game but Barcelona have two very strong line-ups that are capable of keeping the high pressure throughout the entire 60 minutes, which makes them a very devastating team. Last year they played against Al Rayyan and they won by 13 goals. Al-Sadd wouldn't even be here if they weren't the hosts and they've got nothing to show for. They have a few players that are good in terms of Qatari league but they aren't at the top in their league either. I expect an early domination and a convincing win for Barcelona. Details

Spain's scoring issues are becoming more and more pronounced as the tournament draws on. Except when they demolished Macedonia in the second round, Spain did not manage to score more than 27, which was against Denmark, against any other team. The odds and margins for this match were set based on their first match, but I don't think they're realistic. Denmark started the match badly the last time they played, losing 17-11 at halftime but turning that into 22-20 with 20 minutes of impressive handball. Spain managed to win somehow in the end, but today they will not such an easy time at the start of the match. Denmark have great defense that is able to completely shut down Spain (10 goals in the second half of the first match), quick players who can stop Spanish transition, much better shooters, and at least equally good goalies. Mendez is not at the level he performed in the first matches, while Nielsen demonstrate he can destroy the opponents practically by himself. The Spanish must have found it hard to cope with losing against France, as they based their philosophy on the collective, and the drive from the series of victories, but one could already tell against Switzerland that they were getting worse as the tournament drew on. Denmark on the other hand are the only ones who managed to parry Hungary somewhat, and the Hungarian selector clearly pointed out Henriksen's team as their only threat in the hunt for gold. I see the Danes closer to the medal here, and the bet even covers a loss in a close finish. Details
