Depor hired a new coach after the disaster against Leganes

Atletico recorded another championship defeat to Barcelona and are now looking for three points to get away from Real Socieded who are breathing down their necks

The bad defeat to Leganes cost coach Garitano his work. Deportivo opened 2017 horribly but at least a draw was expected from their visit to Leganes. However, they got trashed instead so Garitano had to leave. Coach Pepe Mel from Madrid, who used to coach Betis rather successfully, took over. His job won't be easy because he is immediately to meet a team from his home town that is fighting for a spot in Champions League. 

- I took over just when the schedule is really tough. I didn't have much time to prepare for the visit from Atletico. My assistants, who introduced me to the players, have been of great help. It's good I have the whole team at my disposal as well. We're in a tough situation but there is a way out - coach Mel said. 

There are no injured players on his team after forward Joselu recovered. Only center back Albentosa will be out now with a suspension. The well experienced Celso Borges had some injury struggles but he will be ready to play, though he isn't expected to start.

Diego Simeone has once again failed to beat Barcelona in the Spanish championship despite getting very close to snatching a point. Very late in the game, they conceded a goal and put spot 4 in danger. Socieded's draw yesterday means they have as many points as Atletico. The visitors therefore need to try and get three points today to get away from them.

- Deportivo will have a new coach today and those kind of games can be very tricky. A lot of players will want to prove themselves to the new coach. We need to very careful about that game. Depor have no wins this season and they're in the danger zone, which can be a potential landmine for us. We keep on playing our game in spite of the defeat. There will be some changes to the lineup but only so that I get the best from those on the pitch - Simeone said.

Angel Correa will start in midfield instead of Niguez, who is out with a suspension. Vrsaljko will probably get a start behind him even though Juanfran Torres seems to be recovering well from his injury. Simeone will probably not risk anything with him yet. Fernandez and Mendes are out from before.
