Deportivo in a great mood before the derby

Celta secured getting placed to the Europa League quarterfinal on Thursday, and the fatigue could be their biggest enemy today

When Pepe Mel took over Deportivo la Coruna, the team were on the verge of a cliff. They were just beaten in the derby of the bottom of the league table, 4-0, and then Pepe Mel arrived. Things changed drastically in only four games, and nobody is even thinking about getting eliminated from the league anymore. Deportivo got eight points in four games, including a tie against Atletic, and then they made a real surprise last weekend. They knocked out Barcelona 2-1 at Riazor, so now they're fully optimistic before this duel.

The best example of the excitement that's felt in La Coruna is the president Tino Fernandez's statement:

- Deportivo are an absolute favorite against Celta. It's true that I'm a romantic optimist, and I was hoping for a success against Barcelona, but after the last successes, nobody can think of us as outsiders anymore. Derbies are special games where it's hard to predict anything, but if we continue playing like we did in the last few games, I don't doubt our success.

The back Fernando Navarro got suspended and will stay out, but the forward Florin Andone and the midfielder Pedro Mosquera are back after finishing their punishments. The center back Sidnei has a minor injury and is questionable, but Mel will probably pick Arribas and Albentos in the back line anyway.

Celta figured out a few days ago that nothing will come out of Europe, and they just let go of the championship, investing everything they had to Europa League. So, their championship results have been bad lately, but they're brilliant in Europe. After getting Shakhtar eliminated, Celta eliminated another Eastern European team out of the competition, the Russian Krasnodar, which got them placed to the quarterfinal.

- Getting placed to the Europa League quarterfinal is a big incentive before going to La Coruna. We played a tough game on Thursday, traveled all the way to Russia and back, but this is a derby we'll find strength for. We don't want to excuse ourselves with fatigue today. We are a team that's been together for a long time, who got the game automated, and that's why this rhythm of the games cannot disrupt us - the guest coach Eduardo Berizzo said.

Berizzo still won't be able to use the injured substitute goalie Ruben Blanco and the midfielder Marcelo Diaz. The rest of the players are ready, but the Spanish press keep getting louder in speculating that the guest coach is going to take out a mixed lineup, just like in the last rounds.
