Kevin Anderson - Donald Young (6:3 6:7 2:6)

Anderson won his last five matches against Young

  • Published:

The South African did great on his serve against Jaziri. This is Young's best result after the Australian Open, but he's got a negative score against the South African, who knows how to handle the left-handed players (34-11)

Out of all seeds on this tournament, Anderson has had the best draw. Out of four seeds in his part of the competition, he's the only one to have reached the quarterfinals. He was supposed to play against Stepanek but the Czech managed to gamble a one set and one break lead, and he was a sitting duck for Jaziri afterwards. The Tunisian rarely goes too far on ATP tournaments and he's not at this level. Anderson proved that with a convincing win.

The South African opened the match with 3-0 and he kept the lead until the end of the set. He had 18/18 on his first serve and a very high 82% efficiency on his first. In short, all Jaziri could do was walk from left to right. Anderson opened the second set with another break and the Tunisian got his only break chance in the fourth game. He didn't take it and soon got back to his habits from the first set. Anderson's serve games went by quickly and it's no wonder the match took slightly more than one hour. The South African had 14 aces with 92% of first serve efficiency.

Even though the organizers probably got scared when Isner and Querrey got eliminated very early on, we will still see two domestic players in the quarterfinals. Unlike Johnson, who has been fighting the best players on the tour for two days and did a good job at keeping his serve, Young got his wins in a completely different manner. His tactics in this case wasn't getting one break more, although the match between him and Istomin saw 15 break chances, which is a lot for fast Washington conditions.

Both players did a good job holding onto their serve until the eighth game when the American got two break chances and converted the second one. He won the set game on his serve without losing a point. We saw plenty more chances in the second set. Istomin took a 3-0 lead but faced two break chances in that period and in the following game. He did alright until the end of the set when he used his fifth set. The third set was similar to the first and had the identical outcome. Only one game had a break chance. Young missed all three consecutive chanced and then Istomin had two, but it ended with a break for Young.

Even though they haven't played a head-to-head match in three years, Young an Anderson know each other well. The American won the first three matches when they were both still at the challenger level. The tides have turned once they got to the ATP level. Anderson won all five matches and they played on three different surfaces. The South American is a tall server, but he has no problems with the left-handed player as his backhand is not his weak side. His score with the left-handed players is pretty convincing (34-11), although this is Young's best week this season.
