Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - Roger Federer (7:5 7:6)

Tsonga afer his fourth Top 10 win in a row

  • Published:

Federer had an extremely favorable lot. He had 30-0 total against Ferrer, Cilic and Lopez, and he started the tournament against a player with an invitation. Tsonga had 0-7 against Top 10 players this season until Toronto. Now the beast is awake. He defeated Djokovic, Murray, and now added Dimitrov, a new Top 10 player

Once upon a time, Tsonga celebrated by jumping around and pointing his thumbs in his chest. Not anymore. Now he celebrates like a boxer, with left and right. This week, there's some symbolism. He knocked out three Top 10 players in a row. He had 0-7 against Top 10 players until Toronto this season, and now the two that were defeating him for years went down. First, he had 18 lost sets in a row against Djokovic, 1-9 against Murray, and then Dimitrov fell, too. In a really convincing edition of the first Series 1000 tournament final in the last three years.

- I feel great. I waited for a week like this for a few years. It feels even better because I believed in myself. A success like this will only make me stronger, and not even to mention the motivation that grows with each day - Tsonga commented his transformation.

He serves incredibly well, like in his best days. He had 237 km/h against Murray, and was untouchable against Dimitrov. 88% points on first serve, seven aces, 22 winners. He saved all four break-balls, and realized 3 out of 10. He finished Dimitrov with a break, Dimitrov just couldn't defend himself against the confident French's force. Just this - he saved all the break balls with serve winners. Now, he'll have Federer, but not only is he not afraid, he looks forward to it, showing attitude and confidence he has:

- Playing against Roger is always special. First, you play at the biggest court, and second, the audience is always on his side. It always feels much better to defeat 10 thousand people.

Unlike Tsonga who'll have his fourth match against a Top 10 player in a row, the Swiss had an ideal lot. A player with an invite, then three whom he keeps defeating year after year. He has 5-0 against Cilic, 15-0 against Ferrer, and 10-0 against Lopez. So, four players who never defeated him. Regardless, it wasn't an easy walk for Federer. Cilic took a serve by the end of third set, Ferrer took him to three sets, even though he had  a set and break advantage, and only Lopez lost convincingly.

Federer did a good first serve job again, and second serve this time as well, but he had problems with realization. He's the one to always say it's more important to create a big number of chances, but the fact is he struggled. On the other hand, the left-handed Spaniard is really strong in that segment. Besides, he saved everything against Raonic. By doing that, he did a favor for Federer who deals with the Lopez's technical tennis more easily than with the Canadian's raw strength. In short, Federer got his 11th consecutive win against Lopez stress-free. He's easily dealing against at least one left-handed Spaniard for years.

- From my perspective, I think I served pretty well. I was aggressive and played exactly like I wanted. I'm really happy because of that - the Swiss was very happy, but admitted a mitigating circumstance:

- I think Lopez was mentally tired. He played against a lot of good players in a short period, and had one match more than I did. He probably felt it, especially after a few matches with three sets in a row.

The Swiss will finally play against someone who knows how to defeat him. The last time Tsonga managed to do it was on the last year's Roland Garros. It was one of the bizarre defeats Federer got on that tournament. He had a set and a double break advantage then, and Tsonga still managed to turn the match around. Even though he has 11-4 against the French, Tsonga left a far, far better impression this week, and it makes the world's third player feel respect:

- Tsonga can outplay anyone. When he serves well, he's usually really aggressive, especially with his forehand. You think you control the rally, and then he kicks it and the point is over. Those qualities are why he was a Top 10 player for so long.
