Tommy Robredo - Gilles Simon (7:5 6:4)

Robredo won without losing a single service game

  • Published:

Thiem lost power in the finish of the second set, giving Simon the chance to win the last 8 consecutive games. The Frenchman has a 1-4 record against Robredo, but their last match took place seven years ago

A few players have come to North America from Europe quite late. Thiem managed to reach his first ever ATP final in Kitzbuhel. He lost the final match, and as he said, there was no time to rest. He had to pack up his things quickly and head for Canada. Unlike him, Simone played only two matches since Wimbledon, and then cracked his chin open in a hotel, which forced him to forfeit the last match. It was not a serious injury, but the stitches on the chin were a problem when he served.

No matter what, the Austrian opened the match better, and won the last three games in the set. But, Simon took over, won the second set, and ended the third one in only 19 minutes, allowing the Austrian to win only one point in the last 4 games.

- My expectations were lower since I had still been in Austria three days prior to the match, playing at a tournament. I did well in the beginning, but the jet-lag proved deadly for me. I lost focus, and my legs weighed a ton. I felt like a zombie, and now I can rest a bit, and focus on practicing  - the young player said.

Robredo filled Nishikori's spot in the draw after he dropped out. And that didn't make him happy since it meant he will play Kohlschriber. After winning their head-to-head matches for years, Robredo lost their three last meetings.

Robredo opened the match better, got in the lead (3-0), and then missed three set-points against the opponent's service. But he used the second one in his service game. The second set ended with a tie-break, which Robredo won as well.

Simon will have a tough task here. His experiences with the Spaniard are not good since he lost 4 out their 5 head-to-head meetings. But four of those were played in 2007. A lot has changed since, but Robredo is still a tough nut to crack. He managed to beat Kohlschriber, who's a tricky opponent without losing a single service game, while Simon struggled in the first two set, even though his opponent barely had any energy.
