Ekaterina Makarova - Roberta Vinci (6:3 6:3)

Things aren't working out without Errani

  • Published:

Vinci started the season in the 14th spot in the WTA table, but might lose her Top 30 membership now. She lost her first round matches in the two North American tournaments, she's obviously struggling just like she did all year long. On the other hand, Makarova has the best ranking ever currently, she's doing great and bursting with confidence

Ekaterina Makarova was finally able to get into Top 20 this year, after being very close for the last two. Her game suggests she might stay there for a while. She is getting more consistent, which is the main reason for this ranking. Consistency was for a long time her main problem.

Following the title in Pattaya, she got into a result crisis. The grass season was good tough, she reached the semi final at Wimbledon, and the North American tour is currently going really well.

She reached semi finals in Washington and Montreal to players who went on to win the titles (Kuznetsova, Radwanska), and in Canada, she managed to beat a Top 10 player (Kvitova). The Czech has been doing very well the last two months, and the defeat to Radwanska in Montreal semi final couldn't do much rock her confidence.

- It was a good tournament for me, and I had a good time. Flying for Cincinnati now... - she wrote.

She got off to a great start there last week. She beat Hantuchova, but then met Kerber in the second round, and that was the end.

Vinci opened the season with six consecutive defeats. After a bad performance at Wimbledon she went to play the weaker tournaments in Bucharest and Istanbul before heading for North America.

She reached finals in both of those tournaments, and lost both. That wasn't such a great failure, but the fact she started the season as the 14th best player in the world, and now might lose her Top 30 status is.

She did 5 hard court matches before North America, and in theory prepared well for the tournaments there. She lost first round matches in Montreal and Cinncinati. That proved that performances she had in Bucharest and Isatnbul weren't too indicative of her quality.

We can conclude that they're currently doing very differently. Makarova has the best ranking ever, she's doing great, while Vinci has three consecutive defeats. It seems like things aren't working out without Errani.
