Tenis » Indian Wells (W), Hard court, 2nd Round
10.03.2017. 21:50 Finished
Mirjana Lučić - Kayla Day (4:6 7:5 5:7)

Day didn't do well against hard-hitters last season

  • Published:

The American used Nara's awful service game for his first ever WTA win. Even though she's got 3-4 against the Top 100 players, she lost to Konjuh convincingly last season, Keys, and even Sevastova. Lučić is coming after she retired in the last match, but it was because of her digestion

Lučić

It's a real shame that after three wins in straight sets in a row, she had to retire from the semifinal match against Tsurenko in Acapulco last week. It wasn't because of an injury, she had digestion issues:

- I got something viral and was throwing up before the match. But I tried to play because I'm really not a player that gives up. I wasn't feeling well, I felt dizzy and I constantly felt like I would throw up again. I played great and I'm frustrated I had to retire.

This is Lučić's 13th time playing the Indian Wells, and she's been here every year since 2011. She didn't do great in her last six visits, though - she was stopped in the qualifiers three times, twice in the first round, and got to the second round only once. But she was never ranked this high.

Her score against players out of Top 150 is 9-2 this and last season. Both defeats were last season, against Lao and Kudryaytsev, and both were big surprises. If that can be the word used when you talk about Lučić.

Day

She got to the main draw thanks to an invite, which was expected, and she justified it with her first WTA win ever, against Nara (not counting when Brengle retired).

Nara retired out of her last match because of he right shoulder, and then pulled out of two tournaments. Considering she only saved 2/10 service games against Day, she's still obviously struggling with her shoulder. Day didn't impress anyone with her serve either. She lost it five times, with 14 double mistakes.

Day's score against Top 100 players is 3-4 in matches that were finished. The only relevant player she beat was Broady, but Broady is not even a Top 100 anymore. She took a set from Sevastova, but was then convincingly beaten, just like against Konjuyh and Keys, in straight sets.
