08.03.2017. 20:10 Finished
Nicole Gibbs - Heather Watson (6:4 2:6 2:6)

Watson playing her third tournament of the season

  • Published:

The question is how much is such schedule affecting her form. Gibbs got the wild-card here and she is defending the fourth round from last season. But she is coming here after losing three matches, and, as she said, a frustrating performance at Acapulco last week

Gibbs

The Australian Open third round is so far 'holding' the American's season up, and she is still in the Top 100. She was a slight favorite in the last two matches, but she suffered both defeats in three sets. She lost to Jabeur who later had Svitolina 'on the ropes', and Permentier who finally started playing better, but she definitely could have achieved more.

- This was a frustrating week for me - the American was open and honest after the performance in Acapulco.

Gibbs got the wild-card for the appearance at Indian Wells and the pressure will be huge for her here. Primarily because of the fact that last season she reached the 4th round from the qualifiers, and on her way there defeated Shvedova and Keys.

Watson

The Brit has had a strange schedule this season. She played at the Hopman Cup, then at the Australian Open, played 4 matches for the Fed Cup, and last week at Acapulco. So, she played only two tournaments this season.

Watson is currently outside the Top 100, but it is obvious she is worth much more. The question is how such schedule affected her form this season.

She faced Gibbs twice so far. The American won in 2014 in straight sets (hardcourt), while Watson won last year at Roland Garros after a comeback.
