Stanislas Wawrinka - Roger Federer (4:6 5:7)

Both have a reason to believe in the win

  • Published:

Federer won 19 of their 22 matches, but Wawrinka won 11 of the last 12 finals. The fifth set was the key one in Melbourne this season

Federer

He avoided the match against Kyrgios, passing him without a fight, but the fact that he got to the final without losing his service is impressive. He had a walk against Sock in the first set. His backhand was his strongest weapon again, a novelty this season, and in the second set, he dealt with the American in the tie-break, just like his compatriot Johnson.

- I definitely played great in the first set. I came out and really saw the ball well... The second set was more like what I expected the first set to be, to be quite honest, before the match. It was hard to break and return well off Jack's heavy serve. Things got a bit more complicated, but it was definitely a good feeling to get through in two sets and to be back in another final here - the Swiss was pleased, and now he'll face a compatriot:

- He does a really nice job of defending and then creating, going from defense to offense. He's improved his serve. Especially as he goes deeper in the tournament, his confidence builds. That's when he's harder to stop.

He won 19 of 22 matches against Wawrinka:

I have variation. I have an offensive mindset that's in my DNA. Sometimes for a player like Stan, he likes to have a bit more time and I can maybe rush him. But we'll see if that's possible tomorrow.

Wawrinka

After two thrillers, he beat Busta convincingly. Even though the Spaniard is going to become a Top 20 next week, he lost all 15 matches against the Top 10 players. He struggled due to lack of weapons this time as well. The Swiss controlled the game, won without offering a break-point:

- I mostly play good in the semis. With a few wins in my feet I always play better than at the beginning of the tournament. I expected that good game in this match, too.

That's not a phrase. Stan is great in the final matches. That's why he won 11 of the last 12 finals:

- So far the season has been good, even tough. I had an injury (knee) and I had to take some time off and do some hard work at home to get back fit and ready.
