Roger Federer - Tomas Berdych (6:2 3:6 7:6)

Federer won the last 14 head-to-head matches

  • Published:

Even though he recorded the 9th straight win in straight sets, he displayed some shortcomings in Bautista match and lost service twice. He talked about fatigued and pulled out of Monte Carlo. Berdych was schooled in Melbourne and what's worrying is the fact that he lost the last 34 sets against the Big 4

Federer

He improved the record against Bautista to 14-0 in sets but this time with a lot of problems. The Swiss lost his serve only twice in the last 7 matches but it happened twice against Bautista even though he won 90 percent of first serve points. The Spaniard even served for the first set. He lost the next 8 points. The Indian Wells champion missed 8 out of 10 break points:

- I'm happy in the end but it was a match different than those I played lately. More rallies, more mistakes. I think Roberto did a good job. I might have been a bit tired as well. I won in straight sets and that's important. I have a day's rest now.

He's done very well against Berdych lately. The Czech does have 6 h2h wins but Federer won the last 6 meetings. They played just one long set. Federer is still careful:

- I wish it's like at AO but I know it won't be easy. He beat me at the Olympics, at US Open and Wimbledon - the greatest tournaments. I know he can beat me again.

Berdych

Miami seems to have gotten him going again as it got him back on the winning run. He is now after his 5th QFs in a row and has three straight wins in straight sets. Federer is, however, a whole different story. After a tough defeat at this year's AO, he said:

- I should have watched this from the stands. It was a big lesson on how to play an aggressive game. I think I was a step behind at every point. Even when I won a point, it wasn't because I did well. It was because he gave it to me.

Federer is not back in Top 5 again but he's been playing like he's back among those players. The Czech lost the last 16 meetings with Top 5 players. He lost the last 34 sets against the Big 4 too.
