Federico Delbonis - Kei Nishikori (3:6 6:4 3:6)

Nishikori still looking for his top game

  • Published:

Delbonis took advantage of Struff's inconsistency but he has wins over Murray and Federer and clearly isn't afraid of the top players. Nishikori is defending the final and is not losing these kind of matches. He recorded a few defeats over the past few months which would definitely not have happened last season

Nishikori

He managed to pull through against Verdasco, who once again proved he can drive anyone crazy, himself in particular. The Spaniard served for the third set, saved a match point in the second and forced a decider to then suffer a physical decline.

- Very long match, very tiring, with a lot of comeback, which is mentally tiring too. I had a break point in both sets and couldn't keep it. Luckily, I was focused and won in the end. I have a day's rest. I will need it - Nishikori said after a 3-hour match.

He is 36-2 against players outside of Top 30 on hard court. He retired to Sousa and lost to Querrey, who can beat even the best opponents when on a roll.

Delbonis

He broke Struff mentally. Struff was winning his service games in the first set, took a 3-0 lead in tie-break and then suffered a decline after losing the set. The Argentine displayed patience and focus and took advantage of opponent's ups and downs:

- I am very happy for the win. My primary goal now is to rest well and prepare for the next match.

He is 3-7 against Top 10 players with wins over Federer, Murray and Wawrinka. Those definitely deserve respect.
