Schwenninger - Kolner (2:1)

Schwenninger won against DEG, but Koln is a different story

  • Published:

The rookies of the league won their first points on Sunday by winning over a modest team of DEG. However, this evening they will hardly get a second consecutive win because they are facing the finalists Koln, a team whose performance is obviously increasing

There was a huge celebration in Schwenninger last Sunday when their favorites made their first DEL win in 11 years. After losses in first three matches the players of Schwenninger had an opponent that suited them on Sunday, the Dusseldorf DEG.

After 37 minutes they had a huge 3-0 lead. The goals were scored by Daniel Hacker, Thomas Peilmeier and Mathew MacKay. They dominated in shots on goal 29-13 and it seemed they will easily reach their first win after 2002. But then they complicated it for themselves. First they unnecessarily had two penalties (Ramsey for 10 minutes) and the home team with tho players more get to 1-3. That score remained for the start of the third period.

In it after only 12 seconds they concede another goal which encourages the home team. From that moment on DEG is a much more dangerous team. The goal for a tie is hanging in the air and it happened almost three minutes before the end as the home team again uses the lack of discipline of Schwenninger to their advantage when Johnson gets a penalty to the end of the match.

A once secure 3-0 lead disappeared and Schwenninger had a lot of luck that DEG didn't score the fourth goal. The match went into extra time but there were no goals in it. In the penalty shootout  the first nine shooters are unsuccessful and then Nicholas Petersen scored and brought enormous joy to the away team.

 - Of course we are disappointed as well for not getting the three points. We brought DEG back in the match by unnecessary penalties - said the coach of the Wild Wings Stefan Mair.

With 36.5 penalty minutes per game they are by far the least disciplined team of the league. Because of his serious foul in Dusseldorf the forward Nick Johnson was suspended for one match and he will not be in the lineup today.

The players of Schwenninger will hardly reach their second consecutive win because they face the reigning champions from Koln.

The players of Koln won their third consecutive match on Sunday with the score 4-3 for the third time. But unlike the first two matches which they won after penalty shootout, this time they ended it all inside 60 minutes. They celebrated in Iserlohn in a match in which they were behind 0-3 after the first period.

That made them angry and in the second period it was all played around the home goal. The shots on goal ratio of 20-4 for Koln proves the dominance of the away team, but despite that dominance they only managed to come to 3-1 with the goal by John Tripp. With two goals behind they entered the last eight minutes of the match.

Then Daniel Tjernqvist scores and two minutes later Charlie Stephens ties the score in power play. Koln was on the offense then and in three minutes before the end Stephens scores his second goal and rounds up the big turnover of Koln.

 - It was a very demanding task to get back in this match. Iserholn were very efficient in the first period but we didn't lose the morale and we continued to play our game. In the end we had the needed amount of luck to manage to come back like this - said the coach of Koln Uwe Krupp.

After a minor injury the excellent scorer Alexander Weiss is back to Koln's lineup. They leave to Schwenninger as absolute favorites and they will look for their fourth consecutive win there.

Despite the win in Dusseldorf, Schwenninger have shown a lot of weaknesses. By that I am referring to their lack of discipline and their great number of penalties. The lowly DEG couldn't take full advantage and so they only took one point off them, but last season's finalists from Cologne are a much stronger team. Cologne's top goalscorer Weiss is coming back into the team, and I am convinced that the visiting team will record their fourth win in a row. Unlike their first three wins, this one won't come after a hard fought match. The diferrence in quality and experience is enormous and the team from Cologne should win this match easily, and I believe that they will win with at least a two goal difference.
