Kolner - Augsburg (6:2)

Koln didn't concede a goal last weekend

  • Published:

Current finalists had a very successful weekend where they got the top six points with no conceded goals, and proved their shape is getting better

After a disappointing defeat at home against DEG, Koln hockey players got the top six points with the 9-0 goal difference last weekend. They beat Ingolstadt 6-0 on Friday, and celebrated in Munchen 3-0. Munchen players were crushed in Mannheim on Friday, with 9-0, and you could see from the beginning that that defeat left a mark on them. Koln were a better team from the start.

Home team defense resisted until the 23rd minute when Andreas Falk brought Koln to the lead. Koln kept pressuring and five minutes later, Slovenian representation player Rok Ticar scored for 2-0. Things didn't really change until the end of the game. Koln controlled the game and the result easily. By the middle of the last period, any doubts about who the winner will be were removed by Marcel Ohmann's goal.

Koln definitely dominated, and the shots ratio proves it, 41-25. Yourri Zifzer had his first shutout in his second start of the season, and the only weakness Koln had in this game was the powerplay game, where they didn't use either of five chances.

- We're very satisfied, not only with this game, but the whole weekend. The team were great on the defense, and we put a lot of pressure with our offense. Munchen wanted to make up for the loss in Mannheim. But, we made an advantage in the second period, and we didn't let it go. It was a really good performance from the complete team - Koln coach Uwe Krupp stated.

Coach Krupp can't rely on the freshly injured Phillip Goggul, and they'll enter this game as the big favorite.

While Koln feel very self-confident after two convincing wins, Augsburg players are coming to play after having a real debacle in Schwenninger on Sunday. Larry Mitchell's team was defeated 8-0. They were a decent opponent in 5 on 5 game. But, they had two penalties, and the home team punished both with goals. The first four minutes of the second period, they got two new goals, and the game was ended there.

The home team got wings, and Augsburg couldn't pull anything off, so this result makes for a definitely convincing defeat. Augsburg had more shots to the goal (40-37), but they couldn't find the answer for the home team's goalie Patzold, and Schwenninger gave them a lesson in realization.

- The result is far worse than the game. But this game is in the past now, and we have to forget about it and put all our focus on Koln - Augsburg's coach Larry Mitchell thinks.

Defenseman Michael Bakos and Steffen Tolzer will be out in Koln, and forward John Zeiler's performance is questionable. The home team have a lot better shape at the moment, and it would be a big surprise if Augsburg would get a positive result.

Last year’s finalists are definitely moving upwards. Last two games they won with an aggregate score of 9-0. No big injuries in the team, brimming with confidence, and I am convinced that they will beat Augsburg by at least +2. Losing 8-0 on Sunday must have had an impact on Augsburg´s players. The away team lost the previous two matches in Cologne 2-5 and 0-4 and I am sure this scenario will be repeated tonight.
