Besiktas - Feyenoord (3:1)

Feyenoord's youth will have it tough in the atmosphere in Istanbul

  • Published:

Besitas won 2-0 in Rotterdam, and have a nice situation for the second leg game. After selling their top players, Feyenoord are not good enough for the Champions League

Slaven Bilic asked his players to score a goal in Rotterdam, but they didn't score only one - the 2-1 win is a great advantage for the Turkish team for the second leg game they will play home, with the support of over 40,000 fans.

- Tactics-wise we did brilliantly. We did very well, but I can't be completely happy because we conceded a goal in the final minute of the game. Winning 2-1 and winning 2-0 is not the same thing. Since this is our first official game this season, we have to be proud of how we did - Bilic said.

The team should be better prepared today. The new signing Demba Ba, and midfielder Kavlak, who recovered from an injury, are hoping to be in the line up, while Kurtulus is experiencing some problems with an injury, which means the talented Uysal will join the defense. Winger Ozaykup had some problems as well, but according the the informatoin published last night, he should be good to play.

When it comes to home games (which are actually not home games since their stadium is being built at the moment) they have not recorded a defeat for the last 10 months. They conceded more than one goal only once (Kayserispor, 3-2) after being 3 goals up.

- Feyenoord will try and score as early as possible, The offense is their strong suit. We have to control the situation in our half of the pitch, and set up our pace - Bilic said.

The fear that the board will sell all the key players (Pelle, De Vrij, Martins Indi, Janmaat) and won't replace them with new signings turned out to be justified. The Champions League was thus a lost cause even before the competition actually started. Fred Rutten's young and inexperienced side had a tough time against the Turkish team home. We can only imagine what will happen in Istanbul.

If thanks to Motta Feyenoord weren't awarded that penalty kick in injury time, the result ahead of the second leg game would have been even worse. Feyenoord can count only on the players from the first leg game since their newly-comers (forward Basacikolgu and defender Wilkshire) haven't been registered yet, and the well experienced center back Khalid Boulahrouz got injured, and won't be on the team for the game.

- The team moral is good, we came to Turkey to get through to the next round. We'll try and score an early goal, and if we manage to do that, this game could end either way - Rutten said. In order for that to happen, he will need a lot more creativity in midfield, and better cooperation between his forwards.

- I don't think we did worse than them, even though we lost. There's always room for improvements, and we'll try and do that in Istanbul today. We don't give up - Rutten said. The young forward Jean-Paul Boetius, who should rely on his colleagues more in this game, was the only one who actually did something against the Turkish defense.

- They're a good team, very well organized, and not easy to get past. But, we're here to do better than we did in Rotterdam. I believe a miracle can happen in Istanbul, especially if we score first - Boetius said.

The question is, to what extent can the young visiting team enforce their game on the opponent? A lot will depend on Besiktas - whether they will defend the result they already have, or try and record another win.
