St. Polten - PSV (2:3)

PSV won't be underestimating the team whose value is 15 times lower than theirs

  • Published:

PSV didn't have a brilliant performance in the first leg game against the Austrian second division team, but coach Cocu says the approach today will be much better and they will record a convincing win

The Austrian second Division team Sankt Polten did more than good in the first leg match in Eindhoven. They got defeated, but the final score was 0-1. It's not very likely they will be able to what they did in the 2nd qualifying round when they managed to beat Boltev 2-0 home, which is the result they need today. But they can always hope.

That is another game Sankt Polten will always remember, and no matter how it ends, they can step out on the pitch one again and do their best. But, the visiting team might try a little bit harder today, causing the Austrians more problems than they expect. Coach Gager's team had an away game to do in Mattersburg last Monday. They lost it 4-0, but it was quite clear that they were not doing their best, saving the energy for PSV.

- This is a game where everyone wants to prove we didn't do that well in Eindhoven by accident. I was even more optimistic after the first leg game. We still hope we can get through, and we have the right to expect a sensational outcome - St. Polten's caoch Gager said. His side's market value is 15 times lower than PSV's.

- It's just like it was against Botev. We have to beat PSV, they're the favorite, but we want to prove we can be at their level - Gager hopes. He can't ocunt only on midfielder Oberortner.

- PSV might not be at the level they would be happy with, but maybe they won't take this game seriously enough, which can be our chance - Gager said. The stadium in Sankt Polten that hosts 8000 spectators is sold out.

The Dutch championship opens this weekend, so coach Cocu saw that as the cause of a slightly worse performance by his side in the first leg game.

The Dutch have probably underestimated the Austrian opponent a bit, but any win in which you don't concede is very important at this stage. PSV are sure they're getting through, and Cocu believes it will be much easier for his team to create opportunities when the opponent engage in outplaying than it was trying to get past their 11 players, all of them trying to prevent PSV from reaching the goal.

Also, the Eindhoven-based club didn't have a few key players on the team for the first match (Depay, Wijnaldum, and Arias), thinking they won't be necessary. But, all three are back and ready to play today. The injured midfielder Svhaars, defender Willems, and forward Jozefzoon, who was sent off in the first leg game, are out.

- We fought till the last moment last season for this chance, and we definitely feel the pressure because we simply cannot afford not to reach the group stage - Cocu said.

- We were disappointed after winning by only one goal home. We got sloppy at certain points in the game, and you always need to keep your pace high against an offense-oriented opponent. I think well be better at it today, and we should be able to do take advantage of the space we'll get when they start attacking. We respect the opponent, but we believe in ourselves, and hope for a convincing win - Cocu said.
