Sunderland - Manchester United (1:1)

Manchester United looking to correct the great fumble they started with

  • Published:

In May Sunderland managed to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in 24 matches, but they will have a hard time doing it again, as Louis van Gaal wants to rectify the starting fumble against Swansea

After winning against some of the strongest teams of the league in the final rounds of the championship miraculously saved them from relegation, Sunderland started the new season without major reinforcements and with a 2-2 away draw at West Bromwich. This is encouraging for coach Gustavo Poyet, but their very first game at home brings them Manchester United as quests, wounded by a terrible past season and a starting loss against Swansea.

This will be a great challenge for Sunderland, as United will try to avoid another defeat at all costs, and will certainly play full throttle from the first moment.

-In order to have any chance of beating a top team such as Manchester United one needs to play an almost perfect match. It takes excellent defense, using every chance you're presented with, and some luck as well, because without that and your best performance, you hardly have a hope- admits Gustavo Poyet, who has the entire roser at his disposal, minus injured Giaccherini, who missed the first round match as well.

-A match against ManUnited is always a special, highly motivating match, and often with lots of tension too, so it's important to stay calm and keep your confidence that we can parry them. It will be difficult, but with our fans we're hoping for a great match- concluded Gustavo Poyet, whose team managed to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in May, for the first time since 1968 and their last 24 championship duels.

After great results in the preseason, Louis van Gaal had a cold shower at the start of his reign in Manchester United. Few believed Swansea could win at Old Trafford, but it happened as United were not up to the task, as if they burned out in the desire to prove themselves and failed to perform as expected.

During this week the Argentinian national team member and left back Marcos Rojo arrived, but cannot play yet, while injuries plague the midfield, where Carrick Herrera and Fellaini are missing. The good news is that Van Persie and Valencia have recovered and will start in the away match against Sunderland.

- We had our chances against Swansea, but it was not enough. We should have take advantage of every chance that presented itself to us, but we were not up to the task and did not play as a team, which was our biggest mistake- explained Louis van Gaal the reasons behind this defeat, and probably tried to improve the passing and simplicity he insists on in the game.

- Two weeks ago I was king, after a single defeat I'm the devil. It's not realistic, and I know ManUnited fans are intelligent enough to know it takes some time to absorb a new coaching philosophy. I have a great team at my disposal, we will get even stronger, and our time is certainly coming. It's clear everyone would like for that to happen as soon as possible, which is why we'd like to make up for what we've missed with Swansea right away against Sunderland- concluded the Dutch strategist. In their last 12 away matches with Sunderland they scored nine wins and three draws, and the away team are still favorites, despite all the issues they're having at the start of this season.

Manchester United have not lost both starting matches since 1992 and the defeats against Sheffield United and Everton.

We must congratulate Sunderland for the great performances at the end of last season which allowed them to avoid relegation, but they might get into that situation again. History repeats to those who don't learn from it, and Sunderland management did not reinforce the team after some of their players left this summer.
Their biggest gain is the return of recovered forward Fletcher, as seen in the 2-2 draw against West Bromwich in first round, but against strong teams and title contenders, Sunderland will still play full defense with a few counterattacks, as they are a very limited team, realistically speaking.
As Manchester are arriving for an away match after the fumble last week, we'll follow the old rule of betting on the favorite in the next match after they lose, as Manchester can hardly lose against two weak teams in a row.
Although Van Gaal claims he "needs more time", and is plagued by absences of midfielders, Manchester United cannot afford another fumble, and will pressure the home team from the start. Van Persie and Valencia are returning, enough to trouble much stronger defenses than the one led by two veterans like Brown and O'Shea, who once played for Manchester,
I see this as a one way street, with everything depending on ManUnited, and if their defense holds and manages not to ruin what offense achieves, it could even be a decisive win. Manchester won seven of the the last eight away league matches against Sunderland, and played 0-0 once.
