Brazil - Japan (3:0)

Brazil's tenth or Japan's first ever title?

  • Published:

Brazil need a 3-0, or a 3-1 win for their tenth Grand Prix title. Any other outcome would get Japan their first even title. Brazil has been doing better in their head-to-head matches

The tournament will end just like the host Japan anticipated - with them meeting Brazil to decide the winner in the final game. Japan are in a better situation ahead of the final since they have didn't drop any point and currently have 12, which is 2 points more than Brazil. That means that the South American team need a 3-0, or a 3-1 win today for the title, since any other outcome gets Japan their first ever title in this competition.

- We never won a Grand Prix medal so far, and we play Brazil for the gold tomorrow. That makes me very happy - captain Kimura said following Japan's win against Belgium yesterday.

Once again, Japan's defense was what got them the win yesterday. They have had excellent four days, having lost a set only against Russia the first day of the tournament. They have three consecutive straight-set wins, and 8 wins in a row. Confidence is running high on the team, they will be relaxed since they already won the silver medal, which is something they weren't able to do in the 22 games they did in this competition.

- Brazil serve very well. If our reception is not at 60-70% today, it will be tough. I think we have to win points against Brazil as fast as possible in each set - Japan's coach Manabe said.

This will be the 36 head-to-head meeting for there two teams. Brazil won 31 of them. The last official match Japan lost to this opponent took place three years ago at World Cup, which was played in Tokyo, just like this tournament, only not at the same arena.

- It was a great game, I'm very happy with the result and the fact we still have the chance to win the gold. If we didn't win 3-0 or 3-1, we would not have the opportunity for it - Brazilian coach Ze Roberto said yesterday, following his team's win against Russia.

It was a win in straight sets. Brazil's blocking was excellent, allowing Russia to win only 53 points. Brazil had an aggressive start, and made a total of only 7 mistakes. They were doing better by the day here, and many regard them as the favorite in this meeting for a reason. They will have the chance to win their 10th Grand Prix title today.

- We're happy to have the chance to win the title tomorrow, especially since we had to rise from the dead after the defeat to Turkey in the first game. As for Japan, I can't comment on their tactics as we still haven't studied it thoroughly. But, I can state that they are dong good here. I think they match will be close, and I'm sure we have a tough challenge laying ahead - the Brazilian coach said.

Blocking and serving is what Brazil will rely on to try and win the tournament. Japan will rely on brilliant defense and fast combinations to do the same. These two teams have done best so far in Tokyo, and things couldn't have been better for them at the moment. We have to wait a few more hours to see whether Brazil will win their tenth or Japan their first ever Grand Prix title.
