Genoa - Napoli (0:0)

Napoli wish to continue their winning run in Genoa

  • Published:

In the last couple of weeks Sarri's team has been "pulverizing" anyone in front of them and they have no intention to stop against Genoa

Genoa are a team whose offense game doesn't suit some of the teams, such as Lazi who they often beat, but against some other teams, such as Napoli, it's a given. In the last 10 head-to-heads Napoli beat Genoa eight times. Gasperini is probably more worried by their opponents' great shape than by tradition, but also by the fact that his players oscillate a lot this season. After a very bad start of the season, Genoa did better, and there's no coincidence with their game getting better after some of their key players recovered. On Wednesday Genoa scored three goals and managed to earn a point in an away match against Torino, even though they were the submissive team almost the entire match. The hero of Gasperini's team was back Laxalt who scored two goals out of which the important one was the draw goal in the final seconds of injury time.

Gasperini knows he's up for a tough challenge against Napoli:

- Napoli are rushing and enjoying the great championship. They've won in five matches in a row. Sooner or later they will have to pull the breaks, and we hope it's going to happen in the match against us. We are focused on the championship, other things don't interest us. President Frosinonea put us among the three teams fighting to stay in the league? I hope that won't be the case. If he said that, he surely had his motives. Our goal is to get as far away as we can from the danger zone. We have to put up an identity of a team who are capable of playing good football. We have some problems with injuries, but we'll see who will be able to play in the end.

The injury situation is far from ideal for Gasperini since defenders Burdisso and Marchese, midfielders Cissokho and Dzemaili, and forwards Pandev and Capel all have problems. Genoa's manager s that Burdisso, Marchese, Dzemaili or Capel couple be ready for Napoli, but hardly any of them will be ready to play from the first minute. Genoa will surely play in the 3-4-3 formation which is Gasperini's favorite, but we will know the starting 11 right before the start of the match.

Napoli are currently crushing everyone in front of them, which is justified by their seven-game winning run, and nine wins in the last 10 official matches. The turnover was made when manager Sarri changed their 4-3-1-2 tactics to 4-3-3-, and the controversial president De Laurentiis took the credit for the change, saying that he was the one who made Sarri play with three forwards from the start. In any case, Sarri brought a happy atmosphere into the locker room. Wing forward Insigne ad the main goal-getter Higuain have been especially optimistic, with 14 out of 21 Napoli goals in Serie A this season. Last week Higuain's goal brought down the strong Chievo, and the Argentinian forward scored the leading goal against Palermo. The Sicily team can be happy with the final 2-0 since Napoli shot on target three times.

Sarri decided to skip the traditional media talk before the match against Genoa, but he did give a statement after the match against Palermo:

- We're in a positive period, we're doing good but we have to prepare well for the next match. We weren't bad at the start of the season, just like we're not phenomenal now. Maybe Higuain is someone phenomenal, but I'm talking in general.

The away team don't have problems with injured or suspended players, but it's possible that Sarri will make some rotations in the starting line up since next week, because of European commitments, they have three matches. Considering that Napoli practically secured their placement into the next round of Europa League, it is expected that Sarri will use his strongest forces in Genoa.

Napoli are crushing everyone in front of them and at this point it pays off to force them. Maybe their wins against Chievo (0-1) and Paermo (2-0) don't look too convinving, but the actual game was different and only luck, the goal posts and good goalkeepers saved them from carnage. Higuain probably never looked as convincing as he did on the start of the season under Sarri. Insigne and Mertens are great on the left side of the offense, and on the right is the great Callejon One Gabiadini who is an extra offense class in Italy hardly reaches any playing time at all. Napoli's win is a good bet, but considering that it's an away match against Genoa, an even better bet is an over of 2.5 goals because Gasperini's team are "crazy". Their offensive 3-4-3 football can bring them unexpected success, but also get them killed against such Napoli. These teams traditionally play matches pleasing to the eye with a lot of goals, and considering the shape and their latest editions, there's no reason for that not to repeat itself.
