The Raptors coach: It's not over yet

  • Published:

The team from Canada ended the 17-game winning run the Cavs have in East Conference playoffs but doing something like that again will be a tough task

After the Cavs went through the first two playoff rounds without losing a single game, they met the Raptors, who went past Conference semis for the first time ever. he Canadians stood no chance in Toronto. They lost two games by 50 points combined but as soon as the series moved to Canada, Toronto proved they are not here by accident. They beat the Cavs 99-84 on Saturday to end their 17-game winning run in East Conference playoff series.

- It's a long series. Nothing is over yet even though everyone through they would beat us easily. That was extra motivation for us - coach Casey said.

The Raptors opened the game great. The coach made good moves on the offensive end, which allowed the game to flow in offense. Getting Scola back in the five and getting Patterson in spot 6 solved a few problems, including the one from the start of the second quarter when the Cavs normally take a double-digit lead thanks to the line up in which James and Frye are under the rim.

The Raptors confidence grew every minute but the Cavs didn't give up. They tried to leave the bad first half behind and got just 5 points short. But,t he Raptors had a response to that and deservedly got their first win in conference finals.

- They beat us because they were more aggressive, played faster, more active and tougher. They grabbed all the loose balls - coach Lue said. His team got limited to under 100 points for the first time in this season's semis.

After allowing 106 from the paint in the first two, the Raptors limited the Cavs to just 20 points on Saturday. Biyombo gets most credit for that as he finished with 7 points, 26  rebounds (franchise record) and 4 blocks.

- He was amazing. He really was. He played an amazing game. We would not have probably won without him - DeMar DeRozan said about his teammate. De Rozan finished with 32 points and 5 rebounds.

Lowry finally did something and hit 20 points (7-for-13) which is a big progress compared to the first two games in which he hit 18 in total (8-for-28 from the floor, including 1-for-15 from three point range). Ad for the Cavs, Kevin Lover and Irving did horribly to combine just 16 points with 4-for-28 shooting.

- We didn't play our game and we got punished for it. We weren't tough enough at the start. We didn't pay any attention to detail easily in the second quarter and it cost us - James said after recording 24 points (9-for-17), 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Given the performance of the rest of the team, coach Lue regrets not giving more balls to James. He has been an enigma for the Raptors' defense throughout the series. They do not have anyone capable of even slowing him down one-on-one.

- I could have called more plays for James. I I think we continued to run plays that had been effective and working throughout the course of this series, knowing that Kyrie and Kevin could get going at any time. I should have put the ball in LeBron's hands a little bit more to let him create and let him draw double teams. So that was more on me.

Given the outcome of the last game, the Cavs don't have much to be worried about. They need to just rearrange things a big differently to make the difference between them and Toronto roster more obvious. They will most likely be without Valanciunas tonight which means Biyombo will be in charge of the paint again. Also, coach Casey was not too happy with the refereeing which is rather justifiable since the Cavs had 86 free throws, which is 36 more than what his team had.

- That's over now. I'm not trying to send a message. I said everything I had to say yesterday. I commented on what I saw and that's in the past now - Casey said.
