Ivo Karlović - Milos Raonic (7:6 7:6)

Thanks to double errors, Janowicz pushed Karlovic into the second round

  • Published:

The Pole made a double error on a break-point for the only break in the match, and then he made another one at 6-6 in the tie-break. Raonic has problems with a foot nerve and it's a question if he would play if it weren't a home tournament because he didn't defend the title last week, but he won't be running much around here anyway

Last year Raonic played great in this part of the season. He was fully healthy, now he's not. After Madrid he had to cancel the upcoming tournaments because of a foot surgery and it's a question whether he would prolong the rehabilitation if he didn't want to play on Wimbledon where he defended the semi-finals. He won two matches, and then Kyrgios paied him back for last year's defeat at the same place. Now he wasn't in Washington where last year he won the title without a lost set. He cancelled the Davis Cup. All because of a foot nerve. Who knows if he would have played now if it weren't one of the biggest home tournaments.

- The foot nerve is troubling me. If it were some muscle or joint injury... You can rehabilitate that, but not the nerve. Each day it could be different. At one point it's like someone's cutting me with a knife, and I'm fine the next. That's frustrating - the Canadian recently described his injury, and Tom Tebutt, a news reporter who has been following him, has an interesting take on that:

- I'm a little bit suspicious. He didn't play in a while and that could leave a mark. I wouldn't have high expectations. I don't know how ready he is and he probably wouldn't play if it weren't Montreal. On the other hand, his serve is so dominant that he can only use that to tie wins. That's his style.

The Canadian probably won't have to run around because he's up for a match against another server from the very top. Last week Karlovic got knocked out in the first performance, but he gladly concluded that for the first time after 10 days he played with no pain. He can dominate the serve with an injury too. He reached Newport finals with a painful elbow, and then also Bogota's semi-finals. Here he started with a win against another server, only Janowicz doesn't use that power smartly.

Janowicz is one of those players who make a lot of double errors. He made 141 of them in 34 matches until this tournament, and yesterday he added five more. They were key. The Croat didn't allow for a break-point. He lost only 10 points on the serve, and recorded the high 70% of points. The Pole could have had similar numbers. He lost seven points on the second serve, out of which five were double errors. He did one at a break-points in the first set, and the second in the tie-break at 6-6. Karlovic missed three tied match-points before that, but the Pole helped him in the end.

The numbers are very clear on this one. Karlovic recorded 96% of his game serves this season. Raonic 94%, just like Isner. No one is better than them in that segment. They're at the very top in all serve categories. In one head-to-head the Canadian won, with a single break in the whole match. Ivo was left at nine aces at the time, and at a one-digit number - a rarity for him. Now he has the upper hand because he's been playing consistently, even though there won't be any exchanges here. We're up for a shootout.
