Cilic: I have to serve even better

  • Published:

As sixth-seeded, Cilic could have done better for the opening of the tournament, but Tomic will do. He seems to have come to his senses after the Washington excess. Cilic was playing great at moments there, he was his old self at moments

If we're going to look back at previous years, Marin Cilic did the right thing. He didn't go to Umag and he started preparations for the American tour right after Wimbledon. We know what happened last year, and we also know that Cilic hasn't been playing at a very high level this season, so Washington was the logical choice ahead of the US Open.

Cilic hasn't played in Washington for five years, and now he evened the score. We can't say he played better than at Wimbledon which was the last tournament he played. In the first three matches, Cilic took five out of six sets he played into tiebreak. But if there is something positive in that, then it's the fact that Cilic won all five of those sets, four of which in tiebreak.

- Right now I feel like I'm coming close to my best performances. They're somewhere around me. You can't just push a button and expect that you'll play the best you can. That comes naturally. I am trying to be as good as I was last year, but we'll see what happens - said Cilic.

In the semi-final, Nishikori got, as he said himself, revenge for the New York finale, and Cilic played in that match the same as he did the entire week. A bit of good and very good, a bit of bad. He played more than good in the first set.

- The first set was similar to the match we played last year. That is my vision of the game.

Then in the second set came a drop in concentration and only one won game. In the third he came back after he was down by a break at 4-4. but then he lost his serve right away. Similar things happened to him against Chung and Zverev as well. It was also obvious that Cilic hit more slices than before, and his serve, if we can judge as average spectators, is looking more like Ivanisevic's 'tree in a storm'.

- I have o focus more on my serve in next matches. I have to serve even better - said player from Medjugorje.

He has time to work on that until New York. His next stop is a tournament at which, like at any Masters, Cilic hasn't achieved notable results. He only reached the round of 16 on three occasions. Cilic could have fared better than he did for the opening of the tournament as the sixth-seeded player.

Bernard Tomic made, to put it harshly, a fool out of himself in Washington last week. He was fooling around on the court, tried to turn himself into a showman. But it looks like he came to his senses, and he did talk on the court again, but with his game, not his words.

When that's the case, then his quality comes out to surface, and with it Tomic announced that he is going after Top 15. He gave Sousa only one break-point, used three out of six and lost only 12 points at his serve. His first sere was at high 67%, and his efficiency after it was 26/33.

Serving will have a key role today as well. Cilic said that he has to serve even better, and there is no doubt about that. He is missing easy points, as well as the clarity of stroke he had from the US Open quarter-final. Cilic and Tomic haven't played a head-to-head match in four years, and in their last clash at US Open, Cilic gave the Australian only three games in three sets. This, however, is a whole new story.
