Monfils: What do I have to do against Muller? - Serve better

  • Published:

The Frenchmen was on the court a little over an our leaving Fognini at only four games after a good performance. Muller was equally fast and convincing, and Monfils was surprised when they both noticed in the locker room that this will be their first head-to-head match

As the second biggest city in the world where French is the official language, Montreal is an encouraging place for all, orat least majority of French players. They may not all be fully supported by the audience, but Gael Monfils definitely will be. And we know why. That was very obvious on Monday when he received standing ovation after he stepped on the court.

In such encouraging atmosphere, Monfils always plays at least 20% better, and it is a miracle that he played only one quarter-final here, four years ago. True, this is only his third appearance here. Throughout the match against Fognini, the Frenchman seemed concentrated and focused, he didn't provide any exhibitions for the audience, but there will be time for that.

Monfils had biggest problems at the start of the match, when Fognini had a break point chance at the Frenchman's first service game, but Monfils made a comeback already in the next game. He saved 0-40 with three great serves and then again at 4-3. From that moment on, the match was one-sided, and Monfils won in only his sixth match in these conditions, the first one after Indian Wells.

- I played a decent match. It wasn't ideal, but it also wasn't bad. I didn't throw away points. That was important to me. I wanted to have a good start of this tournament - Monfils commented and then said a few words about Fognini:

- I know he sometimes loses focus during a match, and that happened to him at the end of the fist set. He was slightly frustrated because he didn't use his break-point chances. After that, he threw himself off the balance. I managed to stay calm.

Gilles Muller also started the tournament calm, focused, just as one should be in a match in which he is the favorite. The player from Luxembourg was lucky at the start because he faced a domestic player and once world's number one junior player, Phillip Bester, who is still somewhere between futures and challenger level.

- I wasn't impressed with his game. He was the better player today - said Bester after the defeat.

The difference on the court was quite obvious. But Muller could have had more problems if he hadn't reacted well in the fifth game when Bester had a break chance, but Muller then took three back-to-back break points and won seven consecutive games. Muller also hit 13 aces, but his first serve was at weak 44%.

That percentage will not do against Monfils. Since they both finished their matches in a similar time, they ran into each other in the locker room, and the Frenchman shared an anecdote:

- We were in the locker room together and we realized that we never played against each other. Not even as juniors. or at futures or challengers - said surprised Monfils and continued:

- I am looking forward to the match because I know him for a long time. He is a good player, aggressive, has a good serve

Monfils served just a bit better than Muller in the first round, his first serve was at 52%, but when he did hit the first serve, that point was practically lost to Fognini. 24/27 in the entire match, but Monfils wants to improve:

- What do I have to do against Muller? - I have to serve better than today - Monfils was clear.
