David Ferrer - Evgeny Donskoy (6:1 6:2 6:0)

The Spaniard outside of Top 10 for the first time since 2010

  • Published:

Donskoy showed just how bad he can be at the last tournament. He retired with a hip problem in Munich but had a match point in Barcelona against Dolgopolov. Ferrer seemed shaken up last week, which is just the continuation of the downward trajectory he's been on this entire season

Ferrer was a set and a break down against Istomin last week when his opponents started showing signs of back pain and retired just minutes after. Ferrer beat Garcia-Lopez like always and then lost to Cilic despite being 4-1 in head-to-head matches. The week in Geneva is just a reflection of Ferrer's entire season. Not only has he still not reached a single final but he dropped out of Top 10 for the first time since 2010 as well.

- I was lucky in Geneva first round. I did much better in the second round. I missed some chances against Cilic which the players from the don't forgive. I keep on fighting - Ferrer said.

Donskoy was in Geneva as well. He started with qualifying matches to beat an Argentine who is outside of Top 1400 and then Brkic in a nerve-wrecking finish. He was the favorite against Ram after all of that since Ram rarely plays on clay court. Donskoy lost that match. On the other hand, he had a match point against Dolgolopov in Barcelona but lack of consistency he admitted to many times cost him. It's now only a matter of how much has the hip injury from Munich affected him.

This is the 6th French Open season for the Russian. In each of the previous ones, he never reached main draw except for one year when he got a direct main draw spot. He beat Struff that year. He was knocked out to Lokoli and Marchenko the last two years despite being the favorite. Ferrer has always reached QFs here in the last 4 years but this is the toughest season he's ever had and we have no proof things are getting better yet.
