Radek Stepanek - Andy Murray (6:3 6:3 0:6 3:6 5:7)

Murray: Radek is a tricky opponent

  • Published:

Stepanek could have won the first set in Rome but ended up getting just the second one. Murray was full of praise for the Czech veteran who is always motivated by these kind of matches. The Scotsman is in great form and will not face Nadal or Djokovic before the potential final

Murray had two Rolland Garros semifinals from the last two years. He lost to Nadal and Djokovic, who are both now in the other part of the draw. Given his form, Murray is expected to take it to the next step this season. He lost to Nadal and Djokovic this season but also got back at them. He beat the Spaniard in Madrid and Novak in Rome.

- To be honest, I expected the win. I knew Novak is tired because he played tough matches every day and could have lost to Nishikori. I saw how fast he was losing focus. Of course, you have to serve the best you can against such a player. I did that and I was calm in some tough situations. I had it all under control - Murray said about his latest success:

- Yes, the draw is a bit more favorable for me this season but the final is far and I need to take it one step at a time. It is still of course my goal to get in the final. A few years ago, I didn't expect us to be able to do something in Davis Cup or that I would be winning clay court tournaments and now I'm doing it. My confidence is running high.

Stepanek beat Dodig in Paris last year to become the second oldest player to have ever won a Roland Garros main draw match. Only Jimmy Connors was older when he won one. Radek was already written off early this year after a long break which followed a neck surgery. He is now close to getting back into the Top 100 and has reached his second Grand Slam main draw this season.

- I feel 25. They told me about that Connors thing. It's a great honor to be mentioned together with such players. Most importantly, I'm doing well again. I worked hard to be able to stand up to younger players. I'm proud of what I've done in the last few months - the 37-year-old said.

Stepanek was very close to losing here, while Volandri managed to make a comeback in their match in Rome, Radek is not a typical underdog here. Murray might be the toughest opponent in this part of the draw but Stepanek has reason for confidence. He could have won the first set in Madrid and has won the second one before running out of confidence. Murray reached Madrid final and then won Rome without dropping a single set. He talked highly of his Czech opponent back then:

- Radek is a very tricky opponent. He can adjust to the conditions and the opponent. He's firing some uncharacteristic shots at one moment and hitting the lines in the other. He hit 4 return winners in our match in one game. That was impressive. I started using more spin in the third set to break him. But it was overall a tough match.

Stepanek knocked out Murray two years ago in Queens second round when the Scotsman was expected to take another title. The conditions in Miami helped Stepanek but he cannot be written off. He took a set against Berdych last year in spite of form and injury struggles.
