Alize Cornet - Kirsten Flipkens (6:1 6:0)

Flipkens is no clay court specialist but she is not inferior here either

  • Published:

Cornet and Flipkens come to Paris with one clay court win. Cornet is on a 5-match losing run and it seems like she was not going to be able to as well as last season when she reached Round of 16. Flipkens was never a clay-court specialist and has never went past RG second round but she stands a chance here

It's not even half way through the season and Alize Cornet has already managed to go from one extreme to the other. The start was promising - a title from Hobart after which she went into the other extreme. She could not have gone past the second round anymore and the wins were few and far between. She recorded just 4 wins since mid-January until late May.

Not even the start of the clay court season made any difference. She played 5 tournaments ahead of Roland Garros and won just once. Who knows if that would have happened had she not gotten lucky twice in Madrid. First when the draw paired her up against Bados and then when the Spaniard got injured at 2-2 in the third set.

Cornet tried to up her game and everything else in Strasbourg last week. She won that tournament before and played finals in the past but her obvious problem here besides poor game is lack of consistency. She won the first set against No. 184 Kudrjavceva 6-1 and then won 2 and 4 games in the next two. She explained the reason for her poor results during the tournament in Rome herself.

- Lack of matches is a problem for me at the moment. I give my opponents a chance to hit winners because my shots are not deep enough. But I stay positive. I will see the light at the end of the tunnel once.

It would be better for her if that could happen here in Paris. She played the best tournament here last year and made it into round of 16. The points she has to defend now aren't insignificant and she is already one the verge of getting out of Top 50. An early knock out would make her sink even lower.

Flipkens has gone to extremes this season as well. She opened the season with Auckland QFs (from qualifiers) and continued with Monterrey final early in March. She recorded more than just won only in Katowice since.

Since clay court isn't Flipkens' top surface, it was not expected that she would do much before Roland Garros. She has just one win from three tournaments. She beat only Vekic in Rabat while losing the other three matches in straight sets.

Roland Garros is Flipkens' lest successful tournament. She never went past the second round here. She has just 5 wins, as many as on clay court in 2012. On average, she has just one WTA win per season in the last 5 years. She was dominant on ITF level before but she is no clay court specialists. Regardless of that, her opponent's form is even worse. That means she is not inferior here even though the head-to-head record might suggest it (6-4). The Belgian won their last meeting from Istanbul last season.
