Fernando Verdasco - Bernard Tomic (6:4 3:6 3:6 6:3 4:6)

A duel of last year's third round contestants

  • Published:

A rerun of the recent head-to-head from Queens went to the side of Tomic after the final set

Even though he's a Top 20 player, Bernard Tomic was so far mostly known for his excesses. They especially escalated on clay which Bernard never preferred, and obviously he portrayed his inability in the wrong way. First he tried to play the last point in Madrid with his racket handle, and then in Rome he retired from the match after only eight minutes of playing. His statement in which he "boasted" that he's not interested in results because at 23 he already has over ten million dollars on his account is still fresh. That's nothing unusual for the eccentric Australian.

Still, as the grass season rolled in, Bernard found his rhythm. His ranges were Hertogenbosch quarter-finals and Queens semi-finals. He managed to tie a couple of worthy wins in London (Anderson, Muller, Verdasco), and confirm how grass suits him.

Back in 2011 Bernard made it to the quarter-finals here, while last season he was unfortunate enough to stumble upon the best tennis player in the world, Djokovic, in the third round. He didn't manage to resist, but he definitely has to defend tied wins which surely won't pose an easy challenge. The Australian is an example of a weird tennis player who has the quality, but often leaves it outside the court. In accordance to that, it's clear that you can never be sure about a player like that.

Generally speaking, Verdasco's career is going downwards, but he often shows that he can still play well. He's the type of a player who can be described as "from stars to despair".

He beat Nadal this season and lost to Schwartzman and his oscillations. Before Wimbledon he scored a win in Queens and then in Nottingham, but the impression is that we're not talking about a satisfying record for the Spaniard.

Last year here he passed two rounds, but five sets against Thiem and Klizan made him spend a huge amount of energy, and he came as a feast to Wawrinka in the third round. But, Nando was at the time Wimbledon's quarter-finalist, and he can definitely play on grass.

Recently in Queens Bernard defeated the Spaniard after a comeback. The Australian thus confirmed his head-to-head domination (4-1) and that's why he's the favorite this time as well.
