Espanyol - Cordoba (1:0)

Cordoba closer to Segunda each next round

  • Published:

Espanyol are always good home but Cordoba hope that Espanyol's Cup semifinal second leg game taking place next week is their chance for a good result today

Unpredictable is the word that describes Espanyol best this season. It sometimes seems like they are able to beat anyone (on a good day), but they are also sometimes able to lose to just about anyone, especially away. Espanyol played the last two championship games away with unpredictable outcomes. They first beat the tough opponent Malaga and then lost to Getafe. Interestingly, there's no middle ground with Espanyol. In their 8 official games in 2015, the Barcelona-based team never played a draw. The last draw they recorded was in the Villareal game home early November.

Espanyol have been mid-table for a while now and probably won't be able to get in the race for Europe this season. But they are not in danger of being relegated either while reaching the Cup semifinal this season. They played the first leg game in Bilbao and recorded a 1-1 draw ahead of the second leg game at their stadium next week.

Sergio Gonzalez tried to convince fans that there will be no holding back against Cordoba:

- I never rest my players for the games to come and my best possible squad will step out on the pitch against Cordoba. There is no Cup game for me now, there's only Cordoba. The three very important points are up for grabs and there will be no holding back. We won't lack motivation since I regard the visitors as our direct rivals and this game is worth 6 points.

Espanyol were without three starters last week (midfielder Sanchez, defender Diego Collot, and best player Sergio Garcia). All three were out with suspensions but they are back today, with Javi Lopez being the only player Gonzalez won't be able to count on today (suspension).

Cordoba were though about as one of the main candidates for relegation ahead of the season. The start of it confirmed predictions but since Miroslav Djukic took over, things started looking up. Unfortunately, Cordoba's good streak ended five rounds ago and they've lost all the games sine. They are bottom-table and need points urgently. Their opponents in the last two rounds were Sevilla and Valencia, but Epanyol are not an easy opponent home either.

The media have started writing off his team, but the Serbian coach isn't about to give up:

- There are a lot of games left and nothing is lost yet. We can still make up for everything. We proved this season that we can beat anyone and I don't see why we wouldn't bat Espanyol. They are powerful home, but not invincible.

Djukic will have important defender Cartabia back at his disposal today, but Ekeng and Bouzon are still out with injuries. The two of them have been out for a while now and their absence won't cause Djukic problems.
