Austria with center back worries, Rapid the only team with a clean sheet

The two rivals from Vienna are in very high spirits ahead of this derby match but Rapid truly seems to be working like a well-oiled machine at season start. Austria, on the other hand, underwent many changes this summer and this is their first proper challenger in the season

Even though Salzburg are kind of overshadowing Austria and Rapid over the past few years, the two great Vienna-based teams are still biggest and most popular teams in the country, with their head-to-head match being the true derby match of Austria. 

The 314th edition of the Vienna derby is to take place at Austria stadium today. Both rivals are in high spirits, especially Rapid since their season couldn't have started better.

Following the major changes they underwent this summer, Austria were very cautious when talking about expectations. The new coach Thorsten Fink needed a month or two for building his team and their game. They got off to a good start with two wins (over WAC and Altach), while they got a point in Grodig last round. 

That result was a minor slip since a win was expected but the final 2-2 draw seems like a success if you know that Austria was 0-2 behind and lost a player in the 73rd minute. Either way, the atmosphere is good on the team, with the next game against Rapid being the proper test for their value. 

- We need a cold head and a warm heart. The laws of the derby say there is no favorite - Austria's coach Fink said. He is not worried by mistakes his team made in the last game. 

- It's normal for things like that to happen this early in the championship. When it comes to Rapid, my team are not allowed to lose - Austria's coach said. His center back Rotpuller, who got sent-off in the last game, will be suspended for two games and sine Windbichler is injured, it means Austria have to play the derby match without the best center backs. Sikov and the inexperienced Stronati will step in for them and many believe that those positions will be the weakest links on the home team.

- I've been here only for a short while but I know how much the derby means to players and fans. This is their favorite win. I expect a close game. Rapid are a great team that is bursting with confidence. We need to stop their wingers, who are particularity dangerous. We have plans of our own though, but not everything should be revealed - Fink said. It would not be surprising if Austria goes with a bit more defense-oriented approach because Rapid are a better and faster team and it's not advised to let them attack.

Things have been doing perfectly for Rapid this summer. They have three championship wins and managed to beat Ajax to make it though past Ajax in Champions League. The game against Wolfsberger ls Sunday didn't really go as planned but Rapid got a little nudge from the referee, who failed to react when Rapid scored an illegal goal. In spite of that, coach Zoran Barisic created both good game and good atmosphere on the team. When so, success if guaranteed, especially if the team has talent.

And Rapid do. They have three sensational young players in midfield (Schobesberger, Kainz and Schaub) and the killer Slovenian striker Beric. They also have a very good defense, which of course, works in accordance with Barisic's offense-oriented style.

Finding any shortcomings at Rapid is not easy at this point but derby match is always a special game. This might as well be their toughest match so far in the season even though they already played away in Salzburg and with Ajax twice.

- The team has matured greatly over the past few months but you always need a cool head for the derby match. You have to give it your best - it's the only way to success - Rapid's sporting director Muller said while coach Barisic thinks the fatigue from previous games should not get in their way:

- We managed to recuperate in spite of the hot weather. We also had a long list of players in the previous games, meaning we are fully fit ahead of Austria. We have a good deal of respect for them since the new coach Fink brough about a special kind of energy. There are no favorites today, very small details will decide this - Barisic said. He has had his share of games like this one. He can't count on Schrammel and Kuen, who have been injured from the start of the season and forward Tomi Correa.

- We want to defend the top spot and I believe we'll manage to do it because we're better than anyone else at this point. We'll play to win - Florian Kainz said. He scored twice for Rapid in the last round. Rapid had only one derby match win last season, while Austria had 2 in what was their worst season ever. At least 4 goals were scored in each of those four games.
