Germany - Spain (25:23)

Germany in a very tough situation

  • Published:

The defeats to Iceland and Norway might see them not reach the Round of 16. Even if they manage to get through, Germany will most likely be faced with the mighty Hungary. Spain need a win to finish the group stage in one of the top two spots

The previews are brought to you by our reporters from Russia, the host country of this World Championship!

Germany got to Russia to try and get one of the medals but their situation is very complicated after three rounds. They had no problems dealing with the feeble Venezuela but the defeats to Iceland and Norway might see them not make it into Round of 16. Even if they manage to get through, there is a great chance that their Round of 16 opponent will be the mighty Hungary.

Germany had a chance to win yesterday after being the better team in the Norway game for some 35 minutes. They had a 18-14 lead early in the second half but Norway responded with a 5-1 run to slowly take over and eventually win.

- It was a tough game. I don't think we played badly but details decided it in the end. We simply made too many mistakes in the finish. It was not easy dealing with seven Norwegians but we managed to do so for a good portion of the game - Germany's coach Schwarzer said, referring to the fact Norway often attacked pulled the goal keeper on the bench to get an extra player in offense.

It was a fast-paced game from the very start so the game finished at 60 goals. Germany's goal keeper weren't particularly good again, having recorded only 23% of saves (9/40). Their poor form is definitely one of the reasons for Germany not being even close to their performances from the European Championship last year. Offense-wise, Germany played a good game yesterday, having finished with efficiency of 63% (Mertens 7/8, Zintel 6/6, Claus 4/9).

Given the current situation, Germany's game against Egypt in the final round will be crucial in their attempts to reach Round of 16. They could advance with a narrow defeat if they beat Spain today and Spain lose to Norway in the final round. Germany didn't have much time for recuperation and face another tough challenge today.

- We are to face a very compact opponent who lost only to Iceland. Spain had it easy against Venezuela but we had a tough game and we need to recuperate - Schwarzer said.

Spain had what was no tougher than a practice session yesterday against Venezuela. Their motivation was high and it was clear that they agreed to try and limit the opponent to as small number of goals as possible. Spain in the end conceded only 7 goals (only 2 in the second half), while their goal keepers recorded unbelievable 72% of saves (18/25). The deep-set 5-1 defense was causing Venezuela a lot of trouble, preventing them from creating good attempts.

Spain in the end won by over 40 goals even though it took them longer than other teams to get in control of the opponent. They finished with only 6 goals from fast breaks, while Norway and Germany finished their respective games with 20 such goals more.

Spain quickly turned to the next challenge, which is the game against Germany. That will be a very different match that is very important in the fight for one of the top spots in the group. The Spaniards will almost certainly reach the next round but finishing in spots 3 or 4 will see them face Hungary or Sweden in Round of 16, which is what Spaniards want to avoid at any cost.

They will try and dominate this game through tough defense. Stopping Germany's key players Zintel and Claus will be crucial. Spain seemed pretty patient when attacking against Venezuela and this game will probably be no different.

Germany lost two games, which put them in a very tough situation. Losing today would make the last group stage game against Egypt crucial. Even if they advance, Germany would most like have to face Hungary in the next round. They lost to Hungary by 10 goals in Poland last year. That means this game is extremely important for Germany. The fact they had a pretty tough game yesterday only goes in favor of this bet because I don't expect such fast transition like and I think they'll go with the Spanish pace. They played the games at +60 goals, which is why we have this margin, which I think is too high. This game will be very different than those with Norway and Iceland. The Iceland game fell apart early, Norway played with the goal keeper on the bench and an extra player in the field for almost the entire second half and 4 goal keepers recorded 17 saves in total. Iceland and Noway are great in transition. Spain are totally different, they were not very fast in transition even against Venezuela yesterday (only 6 goals from fast breaks compared to 30 the other teams had against Venezuela). Spain have a rather slow pace, they had one game from Poland last year that finished with over 49 goals. All the other ones were tougher, even the one with fast-paced Russia finished at only 47 goals. The one with Egypt here finished at 53, the one with Iceland at 49, with Venezuela at 54. No one scored over 26 goals against Spain in two years. They are rather modest in offense and almost never go close to 30 unless the opponent falls apart like Egypt in the first round. They played at 47, 50 and 48 goals against Poland, at 45 against Serbia, at 43 against Tunisia, at 44 against Qatar. Geramny had more efficient games but the one that I think is most significant is the one against Denmark from the final tournament in Lubbecke, which the Danes won 24-22. When it comes to similar games (tough rivals or important games) Germany played at 53 and 49 with Poland, at 50 with Hungary and Sweden and 60 with the French (EC in Poland included). Today's game is very important and Germans are to face one of the best defenses here. I don't think this will go at over 55 goals.
