Groningen won a trophy, Twente nearly went bankrupt

Groningen have won the Cup for the first time this year, but they didn't keep all of their best players, but what can we say about Twente, who almost went bankrupt and lost 14 players, and many predict difficult days for them in the new season

Groningen have won a trophy for the first time this year, after they defeated Zwolle in the Cup finale, which also brought them a spot in the Europa League. This is a great success for the team from the North of Netherlands, which was often close to great accomplishments, but they were never consistent enough to go all the way. 

Generation led by very talented coach Erwin van de Looi finally won a trophy for their amazing fans and with that secured their spot in the club's history books.

It is a shame that the financial situation is not so good that they could keep all of their important players for the next season, so captain Maikel Kieftenbels and playmaker Tjaronn Chery have left the club, not into the highest level competition, but English second league teams, Birmingham and QPR. This is quite disconcerting, but also a proof that money is more important than anything else. 

Van de Looi tried to compensate the loss of such important players by acquiring attacking winger Bryan Linssen from Heracles, midfielder Jesper Drost (Zwolle) and defender Abel Tamata (PSV), who could turn into great acquisitions with time. 

The main question is what will happen when Groningen start playing the Europa League, that is, will they have enough players to be successful in two competitions at the same time. After achieving good results in the pre-season, Groningen were weak in the Supercup match which they convincingly lost 0-3 to the champions, PSV. Today's match against Twente should be an easier task, but we have to add that Euroborg stadium has been a fort very few managed to tear down, even the biggest favorites in the league. 

- If I look back at the Supercup defeat, I can't be unhappy with the performances, as much as I can be unhappy with the lack of efficiency and bad reactions in the defense. These are the key details we have to keep working on to improve them - said Groningen's coach, Erwin van de Looi. For the League start against Twente, he can't count on injured forward Islamovic and young American defender Payne, and he decided to leave out of the squad for the match midfielder Yoell van Nieff and defender Martijn van der Laan. 

- We have a choice and I make the decisions based on what I see at the practices, and even though many have talked about exodus from Twente, we shouldn't underestimate a team that has Ziyech, Tapija and young talents such as Van der Heyden, Holscher, Bee and Ter Avest. It is a zestful team, and we will see in this game where exactly we stand. I don't expect an easy job, but I am hoping for the best with the support from the fans - Groningen's coach is determined. He announced the 4-2-3-1 formation, and debutants Drost and Linssen will play alongside playmaker Rusnak, and De Leeuw will play as the striker. 

Groningen will also be fighting an unpleasant tradition today, they lost 12 times in their last 17 league matches, and they won only once, last season in Enschede. 

Unlike Groningen, who will remember last season for a long time, Twente from Enscheded would rather erase it from existence. But the problem is they can't do that and it will probably mean the beginning of a big drop by this club, who have been very successful over the last years. 

The key for such prediction is money, what else, because Twente are in a great financial crisis that doesn't seem like it will end anytime soon. That is why 6 points were taken from them last season, and without the help from the city and a new kit sponsor, they probably wouldn't stay in the first league. 

14 players have left the club over the Summer, and those who stayed got reduced pay. They acquired six new players so far, but we can't say that any of them are significant reinforcement. 

As far as departures are concerned, the most difficult one to compensate will definitely be forward Luca Castaignosa, and also Andreas Bjelland, Bilal Ould-Chikh, Kasper Kusk and Cuca Martina. Coach Alfred Schreuder can be happy that his excellent playmaker Hakim Ziyech (11 goals and 16 assists last season) and Mexican attacking winger Jesus Corona haven't left. 

Newly acquired defendr Gergios Katsikas and defensive midfielder Bruno Uvini will try to compensate for the losses in defense, and Schreuder claims that he will do everything possible to sign on another forward by the end of the month. The two forwards they already have are Thomas Agyepong from Ghana who is on loan from Manchester City and Nigerian Olaitan who came from Greek Ergotelis. 

Financial consolidation is currently more important to Twente than results, but Schreuder thinks that his team will be placed mid-table, maybe even higher, while different performances in pre-season suggest a lot of oscillation in the season that is about to start. 

The mental aspect shouldn't be ignored here, because when the finances are not in order, players' motivation is often questionable, and the start of the season could reveal a lot of things. 

- Everyone who watched us during pre-season saw that we have a good team with a lot of quality, but there are some riddles at times which can be solved only in the League matches. I'm under the impression that we can display a good performance right at the start in Groningen - said Twente's coach Alfred Schreuder, whose team will be missing forwards Borven and Olaitan today, and Mexican Corona will probably be rested because he just got back from the Gold Cup his national team won. 

- I can't risk too much with Corona, and I have a choice even without him, players who have shown that they deserve my trust after what they demonstrated at the end of the pre-season. Our idea is to keep the possession as much as possible and get into opportunities - announced Schreuder, but not many believe that this will be a good season for Twente.
