Before I started writing this, I watched a part of the semifinal match between Niculescu and Wang (Guangzhou). Wang would win points from the baseline easily when Niculescu tried playing shorter shots that often bounced high. But as soon as she got a bit tougher and fired more powerful shots, Wang didn't stand a chance. That match actually got me considering this tip because not much is known about Wang and not much information can be found. If Niculescu managed to beat by firing deeper shots and being tough, I can only wonder what things will be like against Wozniacki. Woznicki is careful about first round and she's still very motivated because of a defeat here two seasons ago. The quality difference is huge, with Wang showing she's not worth this level and results this year proving it. I don't think she can get more than 5 games here. Her serving is bad, and Wozniacki is one of top players when it comes to return. She will have a lot of opportunities both against Wang's serves and in the rallies because Wang doesn't have the necessary power. The difference is simply too great. Details

Other than Shenzen where she reached semifinals, Zheng is having a horrible season. She recorded 3 out of her 8 wins this season. Out of the other 5, 2 happened after the opponent retired. That leaves us with three. She beat Xu (ITF level), Tanasugarn who is outside of Top 250, and Watson, who clearly has more problems than it seemed at first. Zheng is having great injury struggles clearly since she injured her left thigh in Hobart, pulled out of a Fed Cup match and needed medical assistance last week after pulling out of Dubai qualifying match. Kozlova will soon be a Top 100 player, she is focused on WTA level this season only and that is proving to be the right decision. She has a very good serve, with a a lot of spin. Zheng is better ranked abut Kozlova is more consistent and better. The surface in Kuala Lumpur will suit the latter. Zgeng is in the main draw for the first time ever because she played passive opponents with weaker short and poorer serving than Kozlova. Details

Kvitova struggled with Svitolina last week and then lost to Suarez in three sets. She struggled with Jankovic here and I'm sure things would be even worse if Jankovic wasn't injured. She never did well in Doha, has two QFs but of those matches ended in three sets. I don't see a reason why this shouldn't be another match with a lot of games. The surface in Doha doesn't suit her, and neither does the opponent. Suarez beat Kvitova in much faster conditions last week and I don't see any reason for us not to witness another dramatic match. The match between Suarez and Karolina from yesterday is a good sign. Karloina played a match at 23 games with Suarez that could have just as easily finished in three sets. I don't think this will be a one-sided win for either player, especially not for Kvitova. She has a lot of matches in three-sets and this margin is set to be broken even in straight sets. Details

Suarez beat Karolina in Belgium indoors, on a surface that were very slow for these conditions. Karolina could't cope with the conditions, she made a lot of mistakes and didn't use her service to get ahead, which resulted in a convincing defeat. Why do I believe in the same outcome today? Because Suarez is the kind of a player who can get the worst out of someone like Pliskova. She's done it a lot of times, this season too. But there are more reasons for this pick. The surface in Doha is quite slow and point won't be that short, which is a problem for Karolina since she's not very fast. Also, she's been playing almost every day lately. She seemed tired against Voegele and had a lot of ups and downs in his service. She is tired, the surface doesn't suit her, just like the opponents Suarez beat her in the last h2h and all of that is enough reason to trust Suarez today with medium stake. Details

Azarenka in in an 11-game winning run in Doha, with a single lost set. She herself said that this tournament suits her, and she showed that against Kerber too. Working with a new coach will bring a lot of good things, because we know what Fissette did with Halep in her career. Everything was at its place against Kerber, she had a clear plan, realized it on court. She moved really well, and reacted fast to the ball. With such a game, I don't see a reason not to repeat that, because she will again be able to dictate the game. We can expect a convincing win against Svitolina today. Kudos to Svitolina for the progress the made, but her level of tennis can't be matched to Azarenka's. Svitolina doesn't have the strength in her hits and on the serve. Svitolina will give Azarenka some pace, and Azarenka can't wait for it. Details

Petkovic covered this handicap only once. It was in Belgium where she beat Cibulkova in two sets. But the final score was 7-6, 6-0 for Petkovic; Cibulkova had problems with her left calf at the end of the first set. Petkovic didn't manage to cover this handicap anywhere else. Her statement that she's a more complete player than before stands, but she also said that she's either going to win titles or drop out early from the first rounds. That was true this season as well; four times she fell out of the first round; it could've been five times, because in Antwerpen she saved seven match-points. Later she reached the title. Flipkens has been struggling at the start of the season, but she was never crushed so far. She lost to Cibulkova with five points of difference, but took the set. Against Cornet it was eight, but she also took the set. Doha's surface is quite slow, and that doesn't suit Petkovic. It's well known she prefers faster conditions. Flipkens stands a chance here. She could throw off Petkovic with her slices. The offered handicap is quite high for players who don't have the real game at the start of the season. I expect quite an equal match; Flipkens's set wouldn't surprise me, but this margin is an excellent secure point Petkovic failed too many times this season in the first round in order for her win to be paid with such low odds. Safarova is 9-3 in h2h matches but getting there was not as easy as you might think. The matches from three years back are relevant for this one and these two players met 8 times over that period of time. Stosur won two matches (both in three sets) while Safarova won in five. Not one of them was an easy win, with the first sets being particularly interesting. 6 out of the last 8 first sets went over the 9.5 margin, with five out of those 6 finishing with 7-6 or 7-5- Safarova gad 6 overs at 9.5 margin in her 8 first sets of this season, Stosur had 7 in 9 matches and two ended with 7-6. The start support us massively and these two players have excellent serves. They were both in the Top 10 when it came to aces last season. There will not be many chances against opponent's service, that I'm sure. It is therefore to be expected that sets end with high numbers. Just like they did so far. Details

Pennetta finally recorded first wins this season last week but her game was not very good. I expected more from her against Wozniacki but she fell apart after the first set. Pennetta has played 9 matches since the start of the season to finish four of them in three sets and three other ones with a lot of games (21 Safarova, 22 Pirnokova, 21 Wang). She is prone to ups and downs and close matches and I expect one of them today. Kuznetsova has not have a good start to the season and I think she missed out on the perfect chance to beat Kerber last week. She had 5-2 in the first set and lost it and missed out on a number of chances in the second set. She has been prone to playing tough matches since the start too. She finished two matches in three sets, went over 23 games with Kerber, forced Keys into 20 games. stats support this tip and I think we are in for another match with a lot of games since both players struggle and I don't think either is capable of winning easily. Penneta won all three matches here and boosted her confidence. What is very important is her game not being at a very high level in those matches. She had ups and downs and that makes me think she still has some aces left up her sleeve. She's on a bad record with Wozniacki but three of their h2h matches finished in three sets. That was quite some time ago, though. Wozniacki played much better in the second part of the last season, compared to the start of this one. Her results and her game prove it. I've seen quite a few of her matches this season and she does really seem worse than last year. She is given the role of the heavy favorite here and I think that's not justified. Pennetta can be a very tricky opponent after three wins. Wozniacki talked about the flue and no matter how insignificant she claims it to be, it can make all the difference in these kind of conditions. There's also her bandaged left knee. I don't think she's capable of beating Pennetta convincingly like that, especially since the Italian still has room for improvement. Details

This bet is a result of circumstances. Those say this: Hantuchova comes from Pattaya, the hot and sweltering Pattaya where all the players complained about the conditions. Hantuchova looked like a drained rag after the semifinal, and it wasn't any better after the final. She played two tough matches, got the title, then had to deal with the bureaucracy, to leave Pattaya and come to Dubai. She's definitely feeling the fatigue. Barthel is anything but harmless in conditions like these. Fast court suits her fast tennis. I simply don't think Hantuchova can get anything but an honorable defeat after everything she went through in Pattaya. The German has to win this. That's why the stakes are a bit more careful, but the German has to win this any way she can today. Details

The margin is really fuzzy here, and I expected it to be a game higher. Neither Kuznetsova nor Kanepi have a good start of the season, so they'll look for their chance here. Both are aggressive, with good serve, and Dubai courts are fast, so we should expect short rallies and matches with high numbers. Kanepi went over this margin in four out of five matches this season, and three matches went to three sets (not including the national team). Kuznetsova is a bit worse in that regard, she went over in one of her three matches (not counting the national team), but she had 20 games played against Keys. I'm sure both will have their say here, there won't be many chances on the serve, and the margin is doable in two sets. Even though I expect three in the end, to be honest. Details

Zvonareva has already played 5 matches this season and as she admitted, that means a lot. She's got plenty of room for progress and I'm sure she'll be getting better as time goes by. She did very well early in the season, both in Shenzen and AO, especially against Serena in the first set. She got here on a wildcard, had two titles here, and 18-5 record. Wang+s matches early in the season proved she is not capable of playing at a high level through the match. Both Babos and Hercog covered this handicap (3.5) despite losing the first set. Shvedova won the national team match by three games and even she lost a set. Wang played quite a few matches for the national team week, which cannot be good since she's not used to it. She did 4 singles matches, one doubles (retired 3 games in), and cancelled another one the next day. Plus, Wang played in the cold conditions in Guangzhou and has to adjust to very hot weather and high humidity. Adaptaion won't be easy, we know how players do when arriving to such different conditions this late. I think Wang will be no exception. Zvonareva had more time for adjustment, she's much better than Wang, has good record here and I'm sure will record an easy win. Details

Bertens and Rybarykova losing on the first day were not the same. Bertens lost against a tough Schmiedlova, while Rybarykova showed why she plays poorly on clay. She said herself that she only plays at 50% on clay. Another issue is that she's playing with a new racket. She had some sort of an alternative at the Australian Open, and when you've spent seven years playing with the same model, a change is not easy, especially on clay, which she openly admits is her worst surface. Rybarykova can't do better than she did yesterday, of that I'm certain. I'm also sure Bertens can do better than she did yesterday, especially since she'll be facing a completely different player. Schmiedlova claims she likes playing on clay, and that yesterday she played her career best game. Bertens lost that one, and showed some faults (errors) that can be attributed to the pressure. Today she has no room for error, and her defeat can only be an added incentive for today. I expect a decisive performance, she plays way better than Rybarykova on clay and her opponent is struggling this weekend. Details

I don't see why Germany is so favored here. They defeated Australia in as guests last year, but things are different now. Most of all, it's about the pressure the national press created. The second important thing is all four Germans' games at the beginning of the season, especially the first two racquets. Kerber's game don't justify her reputation, I think she even made a step back in her career, and struggled in every match since the season started. Petkovic has a series of three defeats, and she herself is confused with those results, which then influences her psyche - something that's crucial in singles. Stosur didn't play well in Australia for years, and that's why we have to expect a good reaction here. She knows they have a strong team, and they can get even for the last year's defeat, and also, Gajdosova is saying she enjoys playing. Gajdosova defeated Petkovic recently, has good experiences against Kerber, and Storus defeated Petkovic, and got one defeat (Australia - pressure), while she's got positive experiences against Kerber, too. She got two wins and a defeat (Australia again). Nobody can convince me right now that Germany, who seem like a defeated army right now, can be stronger than Australia. The national audience's pressure always had its influence, and Kerber is far from a top level. Petkovic isn't her best mentally, and Stosur and Gajdosova can definitely take advantage of that. Kerber at 1.25, 1.30 in these moments? Silly to say the least. The German made no progress but probably even took a step back early this season. She is too passive, makes too many mistakes, lacks rhythm, struggles with serving. The pressure by the German public will be huge here and that's not good either. Gajdosova is enjoying tennis again, she's doing well early in the season, with three defeats to Top 6 players not being a big deal. She beat Kerber with the second set bagel last season and has two more h2h wins. She cannot be this big an underdog here. I know full-well what Gajdosova can do, she doesn't lack confidence and I think the match against Kerber will be much closer than bookies suggest. Gajdosova has everything to make it close, Kerber is not good, and I wouldn't even be surprised by Gajdosova's win. Handicap is very very good to be on the safe side. Details

I definitely can't ignore what Brengle's been doing at the season beginning. She's playing the best tennis of her career, and feels super confident on the court, so the 14 wins in three tournaments can't be a coincidence. She showed against Coco that she can deal with that type of tennis, just like what's waiting for her today. Keys defeated Kvitova, got a big win, but everyone knows that the conditions in Melbourne never suited the Czech. Brengle can deal with Key's strength with her firmness, like she did against Coco. Brengle's advantage here is definitely the fact that she didn't have to get ready for a different style of tennis. She'll face another strong player, both on the serve and the strength of her hits. You can't say the same for Keys. Brengle is firm and stable in the rallies, she won't score plenty of winners, but she definitely knows how to pull things forward. That definitely doesn't suite Keys, especially because she'll have to work harder to get points. Keys is deemed too much of a favorite here, because of her win against Kvitova. But, it's really hard to justify that role in the following match, and Brengle should definitely not be underestimated, especially because she flew "under the radar" so far. Details

Kvitova said that Keys' game style is similar to that of Venus Williams. Venus and Kvitova met 5 times so far and all five ended in 3 sets. The tip at this margin at Pironkova and Kvitova's match was not successful, even though they opened the match with 5-5. Pironkova didn't have a response to Kvitova's power, allowing her to take control of the match. But Kvitova is now set to face a player with much more power in the shots. Kvitova knows Keys has made progress and Dellacque didn't fail to point it out after Keys crushed her in second and third set. This is a clash between two tall players, who are among the top servers and who will allow very little chance in their service games. They are also aggressive, fire a lot of winners and all of that should result in a close match in which I expect at least one tie-break. Details

The last year's match between the two went to three sets, and 36 games. The serves dominated on both sides, and I think there won't be many chances for return today. Stosur went to three sets against Lepchenko and Safarova, and those two are aggressive players with a strong serve. Coco went over this margin in all three matches in Auckland. Coco's having problems with the return, no secret there, and Stosur's got one of the best serves in the world. But, Stosur's return isn't that magnificent, either. Last year, she only got four break-chances in 18 game-serves by Coco. These players hint an intense match, with very little return chances. Details
