    We have had the counter-handicap on Palma in the first semi-final game of the Spanish championship.     Russia are currently in spot 4 in the group, three points short of Hungary in spot 2. They also played twp games less than Hungary which gives them the chance to get in spot 2 after this game to stay in race fro Euro in the Netherlands. Their rivals are Turkey who are second to last and have no ambition here. They have 5 defeats and one draw - from the Russia game home last year in November (0-0). Russia underestimated Turkey and didn't really have rhythm. When they realized Turkey decided to get a point at any cost, they got their game up but failed to score until the end even though they basically attacked the whole time. Russia had 19 shots in total, 11 corner kicks and a few sitters. When Turkey realized the draw is a reality, they started pretending to be injured to steal time. Goal keeper Caglar who played that game won't be here today.
    - It was a shameful game in which we lost two points. We prepared very well for this one. We need to focus on offense - coach Fomina of Russia said.
    Russia have great motivation to win this and will not repeat the first game in which they didn't take the opponents seriously. We can expect their dominance and high efficiency today. Details

    Serena pointed out ahead of this match that Putintseva is 'hungry' and that she gives 200% on every ball, but every player is 'hungry' against the best player in the world. But the fact that Serena pointed that out shows caution in some way, but positive caution, and that is good for this prediction. Serena remembers her two matches against Putintseva and I am sure she will go strong from the start. Just for comparison, she had two slower starts against Svitolina last year, but yesterday she started strong against her. I don't expect anything less today. We should also point out that Svitolina seemed a bit lost at the start, and I wouldn't be surprised if Putintseva goes through the same thing. Serena only had problems on clay this year against aggressive players (Mladenovic, Keys, McHale) and Friedsam in her first match on clay. Putintseva does not belong to that category. Serena defeated Kuznetsova this year by losing only 2 games, Begu won 5, Rybarikova 2 (but she was injured), Pereira 3 and yesterday Svitolina 2. Either because of her opponents or because of her problems. That is not the case this year. She is not injured, she if physically fit, and she faced players (except Mladenovic) against whom she could play her game and none of them could compete with her strength. Putintseva also cannot, and just for comparison, last year here, Serena limited Errani to 4 games, Suarez Navarro in Madrid to 3, Brengle to 1, Stephens to 4, Bonaventura to 3, the year before that, Errani to 3, Bencic 3, Suarez 5, Zhang 4, Petkovic 4. The balls in Paris are very heavy, it is cold and there is chance it will rain today which suits Serena more than Putintseva. Just for comparison, at the last tournament, Putintseva won 6 games against Georges in cold Nurnberg, and she had not answer to the German's performance at any time. Last year, also in Nurnberg, she won 6 games, but against Knapp, in Prague, where it is also colder, she was limited to 3 games against Konjuh.
    She played two head-to-heads against Serena, she won 6 games in one, and in the second one three years ago on Madrid clay she won 7 games. This year at Indian Wells she didn't win a game in the second set, one in Madrid. So Serena is always capable of giving away 'crumbs' in one of the sets. As I pointed out, Serena is cautious, but positively cautious, and I am sure that she has those two head-to-heads on her mind. The draw was in her favor this year and I am sure she will use that chance.     These teams have left a good impression in this competition, but they were unlucky so they do not have a lot of room for mistakes and it will be difficult for them to qualify for the Olympic Games, but in theory they still have a chance. Japan lost two games against direct rivals from Asia and they are in a difficult position. But they play better in this competition as hosts, and they will give their best in the last three games.     I expected even odds on this game (1.85-1.85), simply for the respect for Iran, but I would personally say that China are the favorites. I watched all of China and Iran's games here and Iran have one win more, but China left a better impression. They had 2-0 against Poland today, but it seemed they did not believe they could win that game. Japan were even with Iran in three sets, even had a set-point for 2-2, but the game lasted over two hours even though they played 4 sets. OK, they dominated the block, but they had a lot of problems with Japanese defense. China are, for me, a much more advanced version of Japan, their block is taller, they have better serve and much more dangerous attackers. China defeated Japan in straight sets. Iranian middle-blockers will face 'giants' Geng and Chen so they will not have as much room for attacks, and they will have to focus more on the sides. I underestimated China ahead of this tournament, but they have impressed me here and I think they are ready to qualify for the Olympic Games. Polish players said that the Chinese are the best blocking team on the tournament. The second relevant game is the one against France. China were even with them in three of four sets, and the Iranians calculated a bit against them, but they still couldn't win a set. The next important item is the time when the game is played. Iran played last night, the game finished after nine PM, and they will get on the court at noon today, while China had more time to rest. Head-to-heads are not very important in this situation, because it took China a while to find their form, and Iran used that. I decided for China's win because two sets mean nothing to them, and the same goes for Iran. Details

    France won 3/4 games, but only one, against Iran, convincingly. We have seen them struggle against China, they dropped 2-0 against Poland, and Australia caused problems for them today with mostly bench players, without Edgar. Selector Tillie admitted that the players are exhausted mentally and physically, they are under pressure and it is not easy to play. It is obvious that they drop after the second set, but they also had less time to prepare than any other team. They will face maximally fired-up and more rested Canada, who can defeat anyone on a good day. Yesterday they had a stronger practice against Venezuela, Sanders made a lot of rotations in offense, and there shouldn't be any fatigue. Canada seemed compact and all players contributed. At the first glance, the time of the game seems irrelevant, but that's not the case. This is the first game of the day and it is played at 10:10 AM Japanese time, and France still haven't played so early, while this is the fourth game at that time for Canada. Canada's set seems like a great bet in this situation. They won a set against Russia, Italy, Poland in the last year, and I don't see why they wouldn't do it today against unstable France.
