    Johnson defeated Paire and Gulbis in two sets here, so he won't lack self-confidence. He played against Raonic three weeks ago. He defeated Isner and Karlovic then, so he's not afraid of big servers. Even though he lost against the Canadian in two sets, we didn't see one break-ball in the first set. There was only one deuce on his serve. Raonic crushed Ginepri, but the veteran can't match him anymore. Johnson can. Especially at the beginning of the match, so that's why I take more games in the first set. Details

    Basel are an extreme favorite in this match, they score three goals per match, and that average keeps growing. They were especially impressive in the last round, when they scored four goals against the none-naive Zurich, and they could have scored more (they missed the penalty kick, as well). We can expect them to be efficient against St. Gallen, too, whose matches were goal-rich so far, except the one in Sion.
    Basel lead 2-0 in the first 45 minutes in all their matches so far, and I expect at least the same tonight. In that case, I really doubt that the first half-time result will be the final result, because the champions will hardly settle by just keeping the result, but on the other hand, they also showed they have weak periods that their opponents used in most cases. When the math is done, I think this match should definitely not stay under three goals, the brave ones can even play over 3.5, but I'll go for the more careful option where the stake is void if exactly three goals are scored.     I'm convinced this counter handicap will be paid by 1.5 in a few hours already. There's simply too many reasons that make this margin unrealistic. The first one is that Simona Halep never defeated Safarova with over four games difference in three matches they played. She played tennis a class better in Indian Wells than what she showed in Cincinnati, and her win was still questionable till the end. Safarova has a great serve lately, while Halep's serve was disappointing against Flipkens. Besides, her forehand isn't as dangerous as usual, and the break obviously broke her rhythm. The Czech is really playing a great tennis, and her serve will be a huge advantage in this match. Add to that great game confirmed by her current form, it's clear Safarova has no chance of winning this match, and covering the handicap shouldn't be questionable. Details

    Croatia played four matches against the Hungarians, and lost each one. The last two were played by the end of 2013, and the Hungarians were without their two best players, Juhasz and Gyori. Today, both are in the team, and should be a big plus, as is Ligetvari who joined after the junior EC in Austria. It's hard to find a position where the Croatians have better individual quality, and I think the odds should be set in the opposite direction. I'll take counter handicap, the brave one can try the Hungarian's clear win. Details

    The Macedonians are far underestimated here, I think. A team with Taleski in can definitely match Russia, and even a tight match wouldn't surprise me. Jovic has problems with the rotation, but this is the first match, and Taleski and Neloski, as well as the rest of the starting team, can easily play lots of minutes. This is a key match for the Macedonians if they want to do anything serious. Their defense is their forte, Jovic wants a patient game and we can expect them to try to slow things down against the fast Russians, and make the match suit them better. Smaller number of goals means less possibility to see anyone being crushed here. The Russians are favorites, but they can hardly crush anyone with their hollow defense. The last preparation matches against Poland and Hungary were a measure, this selection is the weaker than both those teams, and they're too favored here. Macedonia are finally complete, they were without Neloski in the qualifications, and are without Taleski and Davitkovski in the preparation matches against Hungary. It should look a lot better here, and the Russians won't have a job as easy as the odds suggest. Details

    The Romanians got to the EC only because their qualification group was extremely simple (Turkey, Armenia), but the French grounded them easily. They defeated them by 14, 25 and 14 goals difference, so I really don't see how they can win without the double-digit difference today. The French might be the strongest team of the tournament, a lot is invested in them, they have 12 people in the expert camp, including Didier Dinart. Expectations are big and I believe the French will want to show right away that their hope for the semifinal at least isn't for nothing. They said during the breakfast today that they have to win by at least 10 goals difference and they shouldn't have problem going over the set margin, or fulfilling their goal. Details

    Seattle and Chicago match was postponed for a day, but that won't help the guests much because they had a tough match against the Red Bulls on Sunday night, and then traveled 3 thousand kilometers. They won't be that fresh at home, either, so a slower match is to be expected, but at least they're spared from traveling, they have a wider choice in the offensive, and this situation will work for them. Chicago scored five goals in the last seven matches, two of those out of questionable penalty kicks, and they're coming without the key forward Magee (16/7). Seattle defended themselves five times in the last eight home matches, and will be almost complete - the center back Marshall came back on Sunday, and today, so will the back Yedlin. Details

    Gulbis didn't play right since Roland Garros. He has most problems with return, so he lost to Stakhovski, De Schepper, and Benneteau by not realizing break balls, 0/10. Even Zopp took him to a tie-break in the first set, even though he's a comebacker with no form after a long injury. If Johnson showed anything, it's a smart game against the servers. He's not a player to score lots of aces, but he can keep the serve and is uncomfortable in that segment. Gulbis felt it two years ago, when he didn't make a break on hardcourt in four sets. Gulbis is a better player now, but so is Johnson. The Latvian barely defeated Dodig yesterday in two tie-breaks, even though the Croatian player really weakly, probably tired from Toronto. Johnson is rising, he crushed Paire yesterday, and he knows how to play against big hitters. Details
