    This a pretty much clear cut case of USA winning with the only issue being the end score, and I see this as a high value pick for several reasons. First is that both teams base everything on defense. Both Ataman and Krzyzewski like organized plays and strong defenses. Furthermore, if USA played against a run-and-gun Finnish team at under 170 points, I don't see how a slow Turkey will get higher than that. Turkey have no offensive solutions. They'll pass to the centers, and go with slow offense plays. The Americans are strong on transition on the other hand, but if Turkey take that away from them through offensive rebounding and smart set up defense, I don't see why they could not parry USA on defense. Turkey played at under 150 against the lightning quick New Zealand team yesterday, and I cannot imagine this will go above 160. I'm a little bothered with USA relaxing once they reach a larger lead, but this is worth a big bet even with that risk involved. Details

    There are big odds for over on the goals in Rayo's match, which surprised me a lot. The reason is probably the first match of the championship where Rayo played 0-0 against Atletico. But, we should take into consideration that Paco Jemez is still on Rayo's bench, and he won't give up on his recognizable game. Last season, the Madrid team lost to stronger teams convincingly when they tried to outplay them, but Jemez obviously learned his lesson there, and was more careful against Atletico. However, if you take a look at the pre-season results, you can see that Rayo can still be that good old offensive team.
    On the other hand, Deportivo have to get their first win at home, but they're a team whose defense isn't really convincing. Still, I think Deportivo are able to score against anyone, like they did in away match in Granada.
    With all that, I think that over 2.5 goals with these odds has value, and I'll take it. The stake will be smaller because I like playing the first few rounds more carefully, until I see completely what can be expected of each team. Details

    Goal festival on Cagliari's matches will be a good bet this season, and in the first away match against Sassuolo, it's even better, for a few reasons. Cagliari will play for a goal more lead by Zdenek Zeman, and today, they play against a team who plays the offensive 4-3-3 formation, and is lead by Eusebio Di Francesco, a coach who was lead by the experienced Czech when he was just a player. The second important thing for this match is the goalies. Pegolo got injured for Sassuolo, ans Consigli from Atalanta got signed yesterday, which means he still can't play, so the third goalie Pomini will tend the goal. Also, their best center back Cannavaro is suspended. On the other hand, Cagliari lost their first goalie Avramov this summer, and the best center back Astori, and the substitutes they brought are definitely not reinforcements, but rookies.     Inter have not lost against Torino in any of their ls 22 matches, and mostly won them as well - especially at the Olimpico. As we could already see both teams in the Euro League qualifiers this season, one gets the impression the tradition will continue. Inter seem like a well assembled team, Mazzarri got rid of the last few 'old hands' (Cambiasso, Zanetti, Samuel, Milito), and set up a team after his liking - a tough, fighting squad with two destructives (Medel and M'Villa) and organizers (Kovačić, Hernanes) on midfield, and two excellent forwards (Icardi, Osvaldo). Torino on the other hand seem to be doing very well on defense, but one can tell they'll be missing Immobile and Cerci on offense. As their forward Barreto will not be playing either today, this could be felt even more. Inter should demonstrate to Torino that they plan to get back to the very top of Seria A this season.

    Udinese and Empoli's forwards are the best proof that the age isn't the only key of success, since they're almost 40, and are still ruthless in shaking the opponents' nets. Di Natale scored five goals in the last week's cup match, and should be the biggest threat for Empoli's goal now, too, because a few players who were brought during the transfer window work ideally with him - their main characteristic is a good final pass. Pinzi and Silva are out today, but Udinese seem very strong on paper this season, and they should show a difference in quality against Empoli who didn't make any changes this summer. Empoli rely on playing well together, and the veterans Tavano and Maccarone in the offense, but Maccarone is out today, which is a big handicap because there's no real alternative for him. Di Natale and the rest of the team from Udine should easily start the season with three points. Details

    I have to say I'm a bit surprised by the odds on Sharapova, I though they'd be around 1,50. Let me explain why I don't trust the Dane. The Russian is the better player, of course. Despite losing a set against Dulgheru and not playing best against Lisicki, she still manages to win with such form, just like at Roland Garros, which is the difference between winners and 'just' good players. Wozniacki lost a set to Rybrikova, who played with an injury, beat Sasnovich who is far from a proven player, and then beat Petkovic, who said herself she's been playing poorly for the last month. The match before that Wozniacki won against Puig in three hard sets. I was not impressed by the Danish player, at least at the US Open, as she just took what was offered. Adding their prior match history to this, the mental setup in these kind of matches favors Sharapova, who limited the Dane to four games at the IW last year. Details

    This is not a fan's bet as I don't favor playing on Čilić and usually avoid bets with his name in them. However, today I'll make an exception as I see him as a clear favorite and firmly believe he will win once more here. He obviously does well in these courts and often gives his best performances, something I expect of him this year too. He got through the first two rounds on routine, nothing brilliant, but did not have to. The important part is that he did not drop a set, and his freshness will be felt in the rest of the tournament. This year he has a good chance to make it good as both Ferrer and Berdych seem achievable targets on his way to the semifinal. He's had good experiences against Anderson so far, and has also won all three matches on concrete, one of them this year. This is nothing strange as Marin himself said he loves playing against servers, something his score against Isner (5-0), Karlović (2-0) and Raonic (1-1) also prove. We should also mention Anderson's form is in decline after the unlucky loss in the quarterfinal at Toronto, although he did win two matches here. Against Cuevas he played his first match on concrete this year and literally scraped by, while Janowicz helped him a lot in the second one, saying himself that was his worst match of the career. It's obvious that the team still has to practice playing together, and Inzaghi also had problems assembling the offense for this match because the only real forward he has is El Shaarawy, Add to that suspensions for the center back Mexes and the back De Sciglio. On the other hand, Lazio worked great during the transfer window and has no significant absence problems, so they definitely won't go to San Siro with a white flag.     If the goalie Consigli didn't leave Atalanta yesterday and went to Sassuolo - this would be the bet of the day in Serie A, but even like this, Colantuono's team's win should be a sure bet. Atalanta's team is very well constructed in the last years, and Colantuono only upgraded it with players who should bring more speed for the counter attacks - backs Zappacosta and Drame. With that, the creative midfielder D'Allesandro and the fast-legged forward Boakye were brought with a plan. It's obvious Colantuono wants to create a firm wall in front of the goal, and quickly get to the opponent's goal in few moves. To play like that, Verona is an ideal opponent in the first round, they're a team that made the most changes in the first league during the transfer window. Verona's big plus last season was that the players knew each other well, but now, Mandorlini has big problems because almost the entire team was changed. Atleti Azzuri stadium isn't friendly for guests, and Atalanta should use that today. Details

    Slovenian selector Zdovc said it all in, clearly stating his team will have to deal with the three coming matches through defense, not a major surprise for those who followed Zdovc and his career. He always based everything on defense, and this Slovenian team is no exception. He had to adjust a bit to the speed of Goran and Zoran Dragić, which lead to Slovenia beating Australia 90-80 in the first match, a result completely atypical for Zdovc. However, he kind of announced that before the match as he spotted that Australia have poor transition to defense, which he used as much as he could. He will not rush here, and will also try to spare Goran Dragić as much as possible. Mexico have few solutions on offense. Ayon has a back to the board game, Gutierrez is solid on penetration, but as soon as Lithuania pressured them on defense, they had no idea what to do with the ball. Slovenia will do that all game long, I don't see Mexico going over 62-63 points here, and I think this is worth playing. Details

    After two matches played, we have a better picture of these teams, and I'd give Belgium an advantage here. The Czech defeated the Slovenians, who played the worse match of the generation, yesterday, and Dzavoronok had 24 points. I don't think they can do it again today. Belgium are much better and better organized than Slovenia. Let's not forget that the Belgians are great in the defensive, and the defeat against Poland shouldn't be a measure because the difference in quality is obvious, and they showed against Turkey that they know how to play against offensive-oriented teams. The Czech did everything they wanted yesterday, but there won't be easy points against Belgium. Belgium are definitely better, more experienced and tactically stronger team, and we shouldn't forget the importance of this match, either.     Hannover somehow managed to get away with 23-23 against Hamburg. They scored only two in the 20 minutes of second half and then scored 7 in the last 10, with the last one in the last second. Had HSV played a regular finish of the match, they'd have probably won by 5 goals. This is the reason we now have Hannover as a favorite, which is rather unrealistic. They have huge problems on offense, Ševaljević and Patrail are miles from their right form and Christophersen and Kárason are injured. They did not stay at 22 and 23 goals by accident in the first two matches. Lübbecke are not a weaker team, having won a match here last year as well, and although they got demolished against Minden, I expect them to put up a real match. We have a classic Lübbecke story here, as they play well every time they're not expected to and don't do so when they have to support their favorite status. The same happened against Minden, whose backs Kozlina and Rambo scored 15 goals. Hannover don't have such scoring backs, and Blažičko at Lübbecke's goal is not such a poor goalie either. In my opinion this is an even game... Details

    Not many would have thought that Hegemann's departure from Bergischer will be such a big handicap. Only now, a few matches later on, you can see how much he meant for the defense. Gutbrod is far from a true defensive player, Hinze is trying to get that with Dragas, but Bergischer's defense is stumbling a lot. They played at home against the rookie Bietigheim 33-27, and then conceded 32 against Fuchse. The offense was the problem in Berlin, but Gutbrod wasn't playing, and Szilagyi was out. Both are expected today, but coach Hinze said he was happy with the offense anyway. The right back Hermanna is back, too, Oelze was a great cover for Szilagyi and they'll play a good offense, I have no doubts about it. The problem is that they'll concede a lot, and Magdeburg won't forgive that. Bergischer are traditionally stronger at home, and in the last two seasons, they defeated Magdebrug 31-27 and 40-31. The team are the same more or less, except for the problems in the defense, and so over 55.5 seems logical here. Details

    Hats off to Goppingen's wins against Fuchse, who are rejuvenated, weakened, and against the league rookie Friesenheim. But, Wetzlar's wins against Minden and at home against Lemgo have more value. And they were very convincing. Balic and the team crushed both. Wetzlar look great on both sides of the court, and come here to continue that row with lots of self-confidence. The back line Fath - Balic - Tonnesen isn't weaker than Goppingen's Fontaine (Sesum) - Kneule - Nyokas. Quite the contrary, there's a lot of material to discuss who's better, but my vote goes for Wetzlar, and just to be clear, not because of sympathies toward Balic... Wetzlar play great in the defense, have a great goalie Wolff, Hombrados is there if they need help. They have width on every position because Klesnisks, laudt and Bliznac can raise the front line quality from the bench, and Goppingen don't have that, in my opinion... Balic did all the preparations with them, and that's the key reason why they look better than last year, in my opinion. They lost in the pre-season final moments to Lowen by 1, they defeated Fuchse and Kiel. And they also didn't lose to Goppingen in the last two seasons... Details

    Nicolas Batum is a top three, but because of the lack of real solutions, and numerous absences, he's playing as a two here, and will have to work hard today because what we've seen yesterday wasn't enough. When the game was decided, he had no tries, no points in the whole last period, and 13 points only in the first three. He had 4/10 field goal, and the extremely powerful Brazilians focused a lot on Batum in the defense. I'm not saying the Serbians won't, but I do say that Batum will be more decisive, better, more aggressive, and like that, Kalinic and Bogdanovic can hardly keep up. Last year in Slovenia, Batum scored 12 against Serbia, and Parker had 10, Diaw, Ajinca and De Colo 12 then. From those four, only Diaw is here...

    Bastia got nine, three per match, they come to defend themselves, and I believe the players still hear how Makelele scolded them after they were defeated on Parc des Princes because of - lack of aggressiveness. They got three yellow cards and made 16 faults then.
    While mentioning the coaches - just look at what Makelele did in his playing career, and what Sagnol did, and you see what their mentality is about.

    After seeing the first round matches a few things are not clear about this.
    Firstly, New Zealand are hardly a favorite here. They lost something that was impossible to lose, a situation where the coach apologizes to the team is abnormal, and they'll hardly recover this quickly. On the other side we saw a tough team playing for the Dominican Republic, with some great individuals, who in no way deserve to be underestimated in this match. The second important thing is tempo, as both teams love run'n'gun basketball, have great guards, and fire off a lot of three point attempts. Almost everyone gets to 80 points against New Zealand, even the very slow Turkey should have done it yesterday, but they failed to score a single point in the last 3 minutes. I see a high scoring match happening today, in which I give the Dominicans a much better chance than the bookmakers do, so I'll play them on points over. Details
