Turkey remained below 145 points in all six of their friendly matches, including two against Spain which stayed at 130-ish points. Ataman's team went over 66 points scored only twice, 77 against Porto Rico and 70 against Belgium. Their offense is based on long possessions with plenty of screens, and the creative part is not particularly good as they have few players who can create for others. This is a working team that will base a lot of their game on defense, after all coach Ataman is known to ask for a lot on defense. Greece are a bit more creative, but not much faster. Their guards Sloukas, Mantzaris, Papanikolou, and Zisis are not too impressive on offense. Their offensive relies more on the tall lineup with Bourousis, Kaimakoglou and Printezis. They were deep under against Serbia and Croatia so far, and the matches against Lithuania, New Zealand and even Slovenia with Dragič, cannot be a benchmark for what we'll see today. The return of Calathes is a bonus on offense, but the man has been of the court for months, and we should not expect miracles. Details

To be honest, I'm still stinging and angry after the collapse of the Austrians in their first match, where they just stopped after leading +29 and won by just +8 in the end. Their selector was pretty bitter after such a relaxed and underestimating performance, and i don't believe we'll be seeing something like that today. Poland beat them +52, Germany sent them packing with +60 at home, and I expect Austria to "vent" at the weakest team in the group as well. The could not be more confident after a home win against Poland, and they need a good result because of the difficult away match in Germany. The Luxembourg team admit they are semi-professional, so the end lead depends solely on Austria. However, although a handicap is a good alternative, I'll still take the team over on Austria. They scored 51 by halftime in the first match and stayed at 84 in the end, and Luxembourg then conceded 113 (Poland) and 109 (Germany). They have the orst defense in the qualifications, and lost to Austria last summer at 111 (away) and 98 (at home). Details

Yes, Giorgi did not cover this handicap against Rogers, while Wozniacki is also in great form, but I still must play this pair. Camila beat Coco with excellent performance in rallies, the American just had no defense against her game. She was constantly on offense, but extremely precise and keeping the number of unforced errors at acceptable levels, which is truly a success for her. Wozniacki on the other hand showed she was vulnerable on serve. She won the two second sets primarily due to the inconsistency of her opponent on serves, but Giorgi will be able to take advantage of here second serve. New Haven is slightly faster than her previous tournaments, which also favors Camila. Both previous matches they played were close, and I expect the Italian player to put up a quality resistance this time as well, as she has the quality to surprise. Details

Goffin beat Melzer here, a title defender, and Meyer, a new Top 30 player with the best ranking in his career. Both had a reason to believe they'd win, and Goffin beat them without losing his serve. I won't waste time talking about his 24 consecutive wins. Nieminen played his first match on concrete since Miami, and beat Becker for the fifth time in a row, so we can say the German's style suits him. I remember it well when the Finn left Goffin without a single game in Rotterdam last year. Those were the worst moments of his career for the Belgian, and his confidence was never as low as that. He must have remembered that in the final a month ago in Finland. Although the Belgian had momentum, the mental advantage was on Nieminen's side, and he played at home as well. It did not help. Goffin won in two sets with a single break point allowed. The Belgian then won his first ATP title as well, won four matches here, and is mentally even stronger. I believe this will be easier than the match in Finland a month ago, and he covered the handicap back then as well. Details

I don't know if the bookmakers judged by yesterdays -6 for Sweden against Spain when fixing the odds, but Denmark cannot be this big a favorite in my opinion. Victories against Russia and Macedonia are not a benchmark, in both cases their opponents fell apart in the second half which resulted in such overwhelming victories. However, Switzerland demonstrated yesterday the extent of problems the Danes are in against a well organized team, and Sweden definitely is one. Let's not forget that Sweden came here as a medal contender, next to Spain the biggest favorite in this part of the draw, and definitely with better chances of a high ranking than Denmark. After the match yesterday Henriksen said Switzerland have better players individually, prior to the championship he also said this generation has not big stars, and after four games that has certainly been proven true. When they need to grind down their opponents as a team, Denmark has no problems, but against a quality team the lack of individual quality shows. In Nilsson and Hallback Sweden has what Denmark are lacking, they have a tougher defense and better goalkeeper, and should be the favorite here in my opinion. The bookmakers might have taken into account that Sweden can lose by up to three goals here when they made the odds, but this match is played in an earlier timeslot, and I doubt Sweden would calculate like that. There is little room for that, and it's easy to go from a tied game to -3 in the last two minutes, which would eliminate Sweden. Apart from that, a victory pressures Switzerland, as they would then need to beat Spain with a certain lead, making things more difficult for them mentally. Denmark will be burdened by having to win by +3, which could create pressure on younger players, and they cannot be such favorites in my opinion. Details

Russia still haven't won after two matches played. The Swiss shocked them in the first round, and then they dropped a 10 point lead at home against Italy. They admitted the Swiss surprised them, and it was clear that the fact they chalked that game off as a win in advance rebounded at them. They lost the first position and now must look to get to the Eurobasket among the seven second ranked teams. A tough but achievable task. The first step would be to beat Switzerland and rack up the scoring ratio. Luckily for them, there should be no problems there as the Swiss lost their best two players, NBA center Capela and power forward Brunner. The two were the main names of the earlier victory with a combined 26 points and 10 rebounds. Their center lineup is very thin now, and the Russians have a huge advantage under the rim in Mozgov. Italy beat Switzerland in rebounding by 12 rebounds, and Russia in turn beat Italy by 10. This makes it clear that a victory towards 30 points should be imminent today. Details

As much as they were overrated against Macedonia yesterday, Serbia are underrated today. This is the situation: if Macedonia beat Iceland in the early match today, this game will have no importance for either of the teams. However, judging by what I've seen in the previous four matches, I think Serbia will be more motivated to make up for their poor performance yesterday in that case. On the other hand, if Iceland beat Macedonia, both teams will remain in play for the second position, but with one important thing to keep in mind. The WC is held in Moscow, with Russia attending even if they're last in the group. This was clear from their performance yesterday, when only their great offensive performance and a bad day for the Icelandic goalies kept them in play for that long. The moment the goalies put together a few saves, Iceland easily turned around a -3 lag into a 4-5 goal lead. Russia simply had no motive or desire to play quality defense, especially during the second 30 minutes, when they conceded 23 goals, and might have even 2-3 more. Serbia have a much tougher defense, will be highly motivated if Iceland win, and the problems on offense should not be as pronounced, as such Russian defense is easy to get through. The odds on Serbia to win are huge, and I believe they'd even be slight favorites if Serbia beat Macedonia yesterday. This is a match in which either Serbia will be motivated to get a good result, or nobody will, and even in that case I believe Serbia will react better. A 7-1 series in the last 10 minutes against Sweden, when they were already down by 13 and it was irrelevant by how many they lose, and especially the effort and courage in those moments, are the best proof that Serbia care how they end this competition. Italy are two points behind and have one less victory compared to Russia, but are in no way behind in their performance in this final tournament, quite the opposite in fact. The Italians lost against Belgium in a marathon five set match although they were superior on offense and had a +11 point advantage in the final point tally. That same Belgium team demolished Russia by 20 points the next day. Less than two months ago, Italy hosted three control games against Russia, winning two matches 3-1 and losing one 2-3 after the Italians had a 2-1 lead in sets. The timing of those matches favored Russia, as those were their main tests prior to the third qualification tournament for this EC, while the Italians just started their preparations in that period. Italy are missing two of their starters here, setter Malinov and middle blocker Bonifacio, who was not even a part of the team during preparations, while Russia don't have their starting receiver Cheremisina and middle blocker Konovalova, who played back then. Cheremisina was even one of their best. If we also look at the statistics for this EC, even with the two starting defeats they still have one of the most efficient offenses in this tournaments with 42% realization, while Russia are at 34%. Italy also have slightly better reception, while they are about equal in serving and blocking. The Italian opposites, two excellent players Nicoletti and Egona, are what should make the difference, as they're both in great form unlike the up-and-down performances of Russia's Grechanaia and Lazareva. Another balance changer is Guerra on reception for Italy, the MVP of the cadets EC last year, who has yet to shine at this tournament. It's about time she flashed today, as well as the entire team, as Italy have no more room for errors. Details

China will be missing their best player Zhu Ting, as well as captain Hui Ruoqi, first setter and also best blocker. We could therefore say four of the most important players for China will not be playing against Belgium today. At the start of summer, China lost a set at home in each of the two friendly matches against Belgium, while they were at top strength. Today they will be in neutral Japan, Belgium are in good form and can play a relaxed match as they achieved a great deal by just qualifying to the final tournament. They have played China before, Van Hecke is in great form. Against a weakened Chine they should get a set, the stake could be even higher, but Belgians adjusting to Asian time is a bit problematic. Still, the July match in Asia should help the Belgians with that as well. Details

Granted, Makarova is doing well, but is she doing good enough for the odds against the Top 5 player to be evened out? I don't think so! Petra has not been knocked out before the final here the last two seasons. Two years ago she won the title, and lost to Halep in the final last year. Kvitova has done the last two tournaments disappointingly, but bad game on her part and good game on Makarova's part are the reason she lost the last head-to-head meeting with this opponent. That was probably the best Makarova can do, while Kvitova is capable of much more. The Czech is simply a better player, and she doesn't deserve to be underestimated like this. The odds were 1,35 two weeks ago, but now they're 1,90. The first ones were off, and so are these. Kvitova is the favorite when meeting any player who's not Top 20, always and at every tournament. But the odds are not set according to that here Details
